no joke MM, those fools were crazy! Listen to some of the shit Pete Rock does with a horn sample. It just blows my mind that all he was using was a multi track recorder. Its still hard for me to believe really. SKILLZ!

Now these new jacks have Mac computers with all this software or MPCs or whatever. You still gotta have a knack for knowing what sounds good, but damn I gotta tip my hat to the old school cats who were getting down.

The difference between analogue and digital is this ...

Digital SOUND is communicated through Binary code thus there is no "distortion" what so ever unless its done on purpose. This usually results in a "thin" or "cold" sound ...

Analogue SOUND is communicated through electrical current thus it has a slight warmth and width generating distortion to it ...

Now a days alot of people tend to combine both - for instance there are VST's which are basically virtual instrument plugins you can use on your computer that emulate a certain sound of some sort - however what most novice producers are realizing (hopefully) is that without stacking your tracks and or running the sound through an analogue mixer the sound tends to come out "thin" and cheesy almost ... then again that track "Laffy taffy" was made on a 500 dollar sequencer called FL Studio or "Fruity Loops" its old name - which utilizes all digital sound so it shows you what you can do if you understand how to minimize the cheesiness with some Booming bass in order to fill up the sound spectrum ...

I'm gonna end this little bit here so I dont go off on a tangent however i'll say this much in regards to "current mainstream hiphop/rap" and how everyone says "it sucks".

#1. Mainstream music , in general, is comprised of about 50 or so percent THROW away songs - songs by "one hit wonders" or artists who are only immitating the current "hot" sound.

#2. Mainstream music, in general, is comprised of about 75 or so percent Dance/Love/fuck "music" (which are all obviously siblings of the same home) ...

If it makes people dance - it sells - if it makes people cry - it sells - if it makes people wanna fuck - it sells ...

#3. The mainstream is about "quantity" not "quality" ... The wider audience it'll appeal to , IN GENERAL , the greater the chance it has of being backed by a major record company and pushed through the "mainstream" airwaves - IE: MTV - Capital City Radio stations ...

So yeah - if you dont like to dance - you more than likely have NO appreciation for mainstream music ...

If you dont like getting "romantic" and throwing on love songs late night with your old lady than you probably dont have appreciation for mainstream music ...

And if you dont realize that music / dance is the greater NATURAL afrodesiac on the planet than you probably dont have much appreciation for mainstream music...

Am I saying the mainstream is the ONLY place you'll find music that can do these three things - FUCK NO !!! a thousand times over NO NO NO !!!

All i'm saying is that - well - to use a bud analogy:

- Mainstream music is like the "commercial" grower - his brand can get you high as some of the best headies out there - but flavor more than likely will not compare to what you'll get from the Experienced independent heady stash grower. :sasmokin:

And as far as pete rock and the old "mecca and the soul brother" stuff goes ... its not JUST that he was using a "4 track" recorder ... There are digital 4 tracks out nowadays as well ... not to mention i'd wager that T.R.O.Y is definetly more than 4 tracks #1 - #2. Even if he sequenced that whole song with strictly digital equipment it would sound amazing - we're talking about fucking PETE ROCK here - granted he uses alot of analogue equipment so it has that thicker / warmer sound to it making it sound better but regardless the man is one of hiphops greatest producers - hands down. Along with DJ Premier and Dr. Dre ... Three very distinctive sounds - all BEYOND influential.

I agree with you on old Outkast, they put some good shit out back then. I dunno WTF they think they're doing now...

Forgot to add Juvie to that 3rd Coast list - Scarface, E.S.G., Devin The Dude, Slim Thug & The Ghetto Boys too. Forget Li'l Flip - He changed. Same with Chamillionaire and Paul Wall. Those guys were around for years and years and they changed their styles significantly when they hit the MTV bigtime. Mike Jones has always been incredibly annoying.

Others: "Goin back to Cali, Strictly for the weather, women, and the weed, no seeds bitch please" - Notorious B.I.G. (R.I.P.)..... Tupac (R.I.P.) was a badass too. Mobb Deep used to be cool. Eric B. & Rakim are still the East Coast's baddest mothafuckas. Bone Thugz are unique and good to listen to blazed. Jay Z's Reasonable Doubt album is classic. Jadakiss is still alright.

I'm sure true hip hop heads are dissapointed with my selections. What about a li'l Tribe Called Quest, De La Sol, and Jurassic 5, with a dash of Common?

There's so much bad music out right now. Can't stand that Yung Jock. What an untalented fraud.

Yeah Glock. "Crumblin' Herb" was a good Outkast song amongst others. They totally changed. They left their old fanbase in the dust for a totally new crowd. Remember when Outkast used to kick it with Goodie Mob? "Touched what I never touched before, seen what I never seen before, woke up and seen the sun, sky high, sky high, I been at it for the past few days."... and "Who's that peekin' in my window, POWWW, nobody now." Black Ice was the first one and Cell Therapy is the second one I think.

E.S.G. is the shit, I've been listening to Sailin da South again here lately and I'm still damn impressed with this album. I also like Slim Thug's earlier stuff...but when he got signed to Pharrell's label he started going downhill fast. :-\

Z-Ro has some damn good stuff out there, For My Thugz (Screwed and Chopped) is a real good compilation to check out if you've never heard him before.

Yes, the 20 is 10mm. The 29 is the 10mm subcompact. Goodie Mob's Soul Food was my shit back in the day.

Hey Xero, yeah E.S.G. is very underated. More than half the rappers in Texas are though. They stay away from the big record labels and get to keep the big bucks. Z-Ro is quite possibly my favorite rapper - although some of his tracks sadden me. He also reminds me of Pac a little bit. 'Ro has come out with an unbelievable number of albums - not even counting his work with Guerilla Maab and S.lowL.oudA.ndB.angin. Even true fans of his have trouble collecting them all. I think he's come out with something like 30+? Not sure. I like his first Rap-A-Lot release - "Life of Joseph McVegh" (sp?). I agree with you about Slim Thug joining Star Trak or whatever. He needs to come back and keep it real. Slim Thugga Muthafucka, the big boss of the North (side of houston). Flippa too. He needs to become the Leprecahn once again. Doubt that'll ever happen though.

Glock I thought so. Knew you'd be the one to ask. I'll bet that 29 is hard to control. 10mm is a hell of a round. I'll bet the compensated models are easier to control, but would blind the shit out of you at night. Yeah, Soul Food is a classic - That's the one with Cell Therapy. Still Standing was their last decent album. After that it got all weird. World Party and One Monkey Don't Stop...were jokes. If they return like they were originally they could be big winners with the "Dirty South Movement." Without Cee-Lo they're nothing though. I think Big Gipp is missing a leg now too. Touring might be a bitch for him.
