heady's maine adventure: gavitas, blumats, and the wicked lobstah soil mix

i have used calcined DE in the mix in the past, but with the lobstah mix i passed on all the heavier aeration materials as a compromise to my bad back. DE is pretty heavy on its own, and loaded up with water, that shit gets serious.

thanks for reminding me of another good source of silica!

Hey there Heady, you ever try any horsetail tea, or extract in place of an agsil type product? Ive never (yet), but know a great patch of it come slightly warmer weather.

yes i've made horse tail botanical teas and nettle and comfrey FPE, all are high in silicon content.

they all carry other nutrients along, however. nettle and comfrey are especially broad spectrum.

i was just looking up horsetail on dr. duke's this morning to confirm a statement i wanted to make. the new site is spiffy! everyone should check it out!

they've redesigned how the information is displayed, and i swear the horsetail entry is incomplete. it does not even list si much less quantify it. i dunno what the deal is with that. i know it said differently last time i checked.

Calcined DE is drastically different than DE - I'm sure you know this.

Regular DE is so fine it is comparable to flour. It does drastically increase CEC and water retention in a media and it does have the ability to contribute silica over a long term basis. No additional K involved.

I like using a product that is blended DE w/ calcium bentonite. It is generally used as a feed supplement for egg layers, but understanding what it is, makes it a perfect soil amendment.

Heady you think you are short on Si with all the azomite + those FPE's? Did you ever get a soil test from like a core of a pot or something? Just askin, I've never come outta pocket for a test, I'm to cheep-cheep-cheep hahaaaa. Happy Easter by the way!

Pyro clay is a good option, it does hold water as well, but the amount that is used is minimal and doesn't usually make a dramatic effect.

uh... :shucks: i had not fully put this together until you pointed it out.

the product i used to use was napa 8822 it is calcined DE.

after 10 minutes of research i am better informed on the subject. thanks for encouraging some learning frank! i love that

i'd love to give a thoughtful paraphrasing of what i read but i'm too tired today :coffee:

basically don't chronically inhale calcined DE cause it's crystalline silica and repeated exposure could lead to silicosis and other scary sounding medical conditions.

non-calcined DE like frank described is amorphous silica. there's food grades so i guess it's not so dangerous this one.

i also learned that there are several major sites where DE is mined and all their products test differently for levels of si and other trace minerals, although i think all of them are mostly si.

Red Lake Earth Diatomaceous Earth w/ Calcium Bentonite. OMRI registered, food grade product, 20 lbs bag is about $12.

It's a two for one win and does wonders for increasing CEC. I still wear a mask when dealing with pretty much ANY soil mixing. I don't like fishing black boogers out of my nose for days afterwards...

Heady blunts I have a question I'm really hoping you can chime in on bro. I lived in Orlando for a few years while attending UCF and I used to get a bomb ass strain called "Krypie", have you smoked or even heard of it? When I mention it to people they say Kryp is a vague term to describe good weed but no this particular was strain was called Krypie, 25 a gram and was worth every penny!!!

hell yea i'm familiar! that's one of my personal grails.

i always distinguish FL crip or crippy with a "C" cause there's another cut from the PNW called KRYPTONITE that causes a lot of confusion regarding this topic.

i grew up in sofla and was raised on crip and miami haze.

i agree crippy ended up becoming a generic term for top shelf herb after a while. but there were bags that were "THE" crip that were unique and exceptional beyond all comparison. that is what i will always be hunting for.

there's a couple threads started on the topic. they are 99% bullshitting and conjecture, but they're still fun to read.

in search of florida crippy

and the even more bullshitty:

crippy - pre86 og kush

take everything you read in those with several large grains of salt. supa is especially talented at exaggeration and baseless claims.

it's not hard to evaluate who knows what they're talking about and who is spinning tales.

all my experience with this variety came when i was a young stoner, buying small bags for my head. i can only speak from that perspective on the crip. but i hope to find her or a strong representation of her and become familiar with her as a gardener.

Same here bro, I would love to to grow out a nice stable cut of some real "Crippy". Dude I'm soooo happy someone FINALLY knows what I'm talking about, you're a true connoisseur bro. I wonder if it's still around? I haven't been back to Florida since 2008 but if that real "Crippy " is still floating around I need to look into some vavation time lol. Thanks again for the shedding some light on this for me and happy growing brotha.

i left florida around 2003 but i've still got family there. i haven't seen a bag of crip in 10+ years. not to say it's not around, but i don't have the plug anymore.

i wouldn't be surprised if cali export dominates the market down there nowadays.

it'd be fun to blow up a McMansion in some cookie cutter development. sounds like a good retirement plan hehe. like an episode of mtv cribs but every room: 12k :biglaugh:

i wonder what distinguishes one from mega-stoner to cannabis connoisseur? hmmm :chin:

hehe i'm almost embarrassed to write this, but i've been smoking the best herb i can get my hands on every day for 17 years. that is a long time! holy mole!

if it's a balm it's probably only oils and wax, maybe a butter if it's fancy.

it's the formulas with water that offer potential for nasties.

please post the list of ingredients if it's labeled!

lung candy is from mota rebel it's KKSC x rez straw d. a kksc back cross.

roosta picked out a nice one. i'm excited to see how she likes our garden.

i posted a nice pic of roosta's flower a few months ago. hashtag throwback thursday! :snap out of it:

I'd smoke that. It looks very close to a pheno I grew from AnnaC Seeds years ago. It was Strawberry Diesel x NYC Diesel. I would put it in my top 10 fo sure. That one you have looks to be a keeper. Hang on to her.

haha vortex you posted that in the other thread we were discussing BD in and i was like, wait a minute, that's exactly how i've been making my horsetail teas....

and it was coot that suggested that method...

so coot secretly loves biodynamics! i bet at this very moment he's wearing a tshirt with steiner's face and stirring his brews in consecutively clockwise and counterclockwise directions! :biglaugh:

I bet he has a cosmic pipe in the center of his garden too...loaded with homeopathic preps of unicorn farts and ground up spider mites.

Speaking of which do you have any opinions on pest peppers. When you take the pest you want to discourage and burn them under a certain moon. Then take the ash potentize it apply in a spray.

High Lovel claims great success with fitting rid of rats and mice.

How often are you guys spraying the 508, are you watering with it as well? Heady, are you getting away from horsetail because your having an issue with the extra nutes its bringing with it, or are you try to just make sure it doesnt become a one problem down the road?
