Damn buddy! You should have brought some more of those flowers to the get together. They look real nice. Next time more flowers. But you gotta love a four hour resin session!

Hey Heady! i'm putting my next supply order together and was curious.
What kind of price do you find for the C of M Lobster Compost locally?
Also where/how do you source your buckwheat hulls?

The Benson Farm Compost appears to be a regional item. Any thoughts on a substitute?

the coast of maine lobster compost ususally ranges from 9--14$ a bag depending on how fancy your garden center is.

buckwheat hulls we found in little ~3 cubic foot bales at the farm store. they weren't that cheap, i think $25 each.

if you're thinking of mail ordering stuff mr. soul then i suggest malibu biodynamic bu's blend as a substitute to the benson farms. it's heavy so if they want an arm an a leg to ship it feel free to adjust the ratio down to 1/3 of the compost input.

if you really wanna get delux sub in EWC for 10% of the compost input. the only catch is don't skimp on quality. worm power or better.

in my area quality castings were cost prohibitive for the couple yards of soil we built, so we just bought one little bag of coast of maine EWC and used it to brew compost tea to inoculate after we finished making the mix.

then we built worm beds so we'd have all the great castings we ever would need and not have to compromise in the future.

i just had this convo tonight with mega. i think the cleanest i've made has been fresh frozen, but that properly cured might still be better. it's got better shelf life, and with the right resins it can be insanely loud and tasty.

Saaaaaaay whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?!?! found ya!

At Agway in Arundel off 115 they have lobby compost year-round for just over $7. They store outside and bring inside for thawing if you call ahead. Real nice people, they also have a ton of standard amendments like alfalfa meal in 50# sacks. Might help folks in a pinch instead of driving to Fedco. Grow Depot in Augusta has compost bags infested with gnats thanks to Fixit Farms as it was all being stored inside together all winter, argh!

Worm Power jacked their rate by 50% this year, WTF! Still had to buy a yard regardless cause its the best.

I have been working in the COM lobster meal (not the blended meal) to your lobstah mix, a little hot but girls tend to like it. Aloe and Coconut concentrates from Buildasoil aren't that great from my tests, gotta find another source.

Com lobster compost is cut with peat. That's not cool.
So is almost everybodies, I spent 2 hours with a COM rep. over the weekend, and still felt good about using their products, especially if you can score it for under 7 a bag on sale with discounts. It beat out most of the local compost we tried last year that wasn't cut. Its definately the best store bought Ive tried....by far.

huh the bags of lobster we bought last year were all fully finished, nice sweet mushroom earth smell. no ammonia.

the benson farms on the other hand were probably on the hot side.

you're right about the peat in the lobster stoney. afaik it helps balance moisture and avoid a proliferation of anerobic bacteria. to a certain extent it might be a good thing for a bagged compost. i've had poorly stored bags of compost that go completely anaerobic and they basically have to be thrown in the dumpster. smell like wet shit. definitely not something i'd want to share with my garden.

quality home made compost is my first choice over any bagged stuff. if i'm buying compost i'm already compromising on quality IMO. but i gotta make the best of what i've got to work with :joint:
