this go round i chose fruity varieties and cookie dominant crosses. they have all been pollinated with GDP fem pollen.
granola funk from bodhi - smells like the top of a homeade pie crust. like if you stuck your nose right by one of the decorative slices in the crust.
as does the Cherry pie from Hazeman. this cherry pie doesnt look very cool, but smells nice. doughy dessert smells.

i started some seeds...
homeade:
100 ecsd x rez sour d ibl
100 black lime bubba x sour d
100 black lime bubba x apples and bananas
store bought:
100 mayberry S1s

busy spring. my first time using an LED. but just for germination. these will be outdoor plants.

lots of babies being born right now.

and the trash pandas attacked my chickens...
it was very sad burying 4 of my decapitated chickens. trash panda/monkey cat reached through the wire and pulled heads off. wtf?
so the war has begun. ive rehabbed several coons over my years. living on a rehab farm we nursed many injured and orphaned animals back to health. it sucks to be on the defensive against them this time. live traps have been deployed. chicken coop reinforced...
when i catch one im going to feed it psychadelics and try to convert it to a vegetarian lifestyle. then im dropping it off at my ex wifes house.

well i dont have a hard deadline when they go out. they will tell me. there have been years past when the rain just stunted my plants and i felt like it was a rough start for a plant. and kinda cold sometimes. hell sometimes it will snow in May around here. its not unheard of. so i got to where i just kinda aim for june 1st. then the ground will be warm. they will be a month old and rootbound and eager to stretch their legs.
This spring has been drier and warmer than the last. i would probably have 2 footers by now if i was chomping at the bit and had planted earlier. but i dont want big plants. they are kind of a bitch honestly. i damn near had to have my shoulder rebuilt after wrestling big plants at harvest a few years back. 6 footers with lots of tops is my preference here. a perk of the unlimited plant count. those big trees are so cool though.
last year i was busy building the fence and had no time for soil testing so i shot from the hip. things looked really good overall but one genetic cried for more potassium but i just suffered through it as i was unsure and didnt want to make a drastic choice. after testing was done this past winter we did see a low potassium number amongst other things. it was reassuring to have some data to look at. more lime this year. lots of calcium and a bunch of other shit. ive been taking guidance from David King. he has been helping me learn wtf im doing. im guessing youd call it regenerative farming?
ive got a buttload of covercrop seeds spread over the field and im pretty excited to see it finally sprouting. lots of birds on this little plot. its low lying and wet. so ive counted ten or twelve different kinds of birds in a single day.
ok im rambling. these thoughts brought to you by: lavender aura - Bodhi

You talking about David from mendo? we were in class together learning soil balancing. post up your Melich 3 results if you can...

this is the hippy coon that was trippin' in one of my patch last summer.

hey Chunky. yeah, i think he is from Mendo. what class was it that you guys took? i have lots of learning to do but i am genuinely interested in learning soil science.

did you dose that coon? lol.
great minds think alike?
my coon needs to chill the fuck out. no need to be popping heads off my babies!

i will see what soil documents i can round up...

No, I didn't dose the panda but the game cam sure made it look like I did!

I took a couple soil balancing classes to learn how to interpret these tests and write a rec for amending. I met David there.

it's really more of an art than a science in that everyone who does it typically has different mineral targets for cannabis, different ideas about which type of soil test and lab to use, different ideas about which organic products work best, etc.

The mixtures we use for growing canna are quite different from field soil and also are varied.

the class we took used a popular, free, and older book as a text. search for the ideal soil .pdf
the author changed the mineral goals over different editions and we were taught to follow the most recent edition but personally I follow targets that are advocated by Slownickle and have found them to create far better quality than the ones in that book. the book is great to explain the basics and show how the math works.

when we are growing canna many of us will ignore optimum yield in return for optimum production of secondary metabolites in the canna that produce more aroma, resin and effects. almost all AG is using targets for optimal biomass not best smell or flavor.

the last 2 seasons since I took this approach have made the biggest difference in the quality improvement that I have seen since my first harvest in 1981.

I am water only from rain mostly or my stream and top dress 3 times with no liquid feeds and nothing sprayed for pests or nutrition, mostly because I'm quite sick and this is my medicine but equally because I'm tired and poor and need to make a nice crop solo with little fuss. my nutrition targets are aggressive compared to what our teacher liked but experienced smokers like my flowers. also where I live we get hella rain compared to Cali where my teacher grew and much of what goes on my soil seems to wash out before the next season in my beds which are half as heavy as yours based on the results of our bulk density tests. I use lots of rice hulls and perlite to help my outdoor beds drain like indoor mixes do.

@Chunkypigs thanks for the reply. i have definitely kept an eye on your grows here. very nice results. not to mention you have all of the real cuts!

one of my main concerns on my plot has been drainage. i really worried if it would be a crippling factor last year. then it was a drought and wasnt a factor at all. but i do worry what will happen if and when we have a wet year. i asked David about this because i was thinking what you mentioned. rice hulls, perlite, and biochar.
but he keeps returning to a calcium VS magnesium imbalance? so ive just been following his advice. But honestly i feel like i need some aggregate pretty badly?

after looking back on last season, most the things i worried about didnt happen. the true challenges were adequate drying/curing space. and staggering the harvest. unfortunately we had an early freeze last year and instead of getting the second half of the field hung and dried we had to go into freezers with it. we simply ran out of space. so we have multiple freezers full of fresh frozen and ive yet to make any connections to get it processed.
2022 harvest was emotionally taxing! we were camped in the field. and rode out the freezing weather in a tent. just me and the wife. lol.
the bumper harvest turned into a curse! it wore us out for sure. self induced PTSD. so much so that im planting less this year. it was simply more than we could handle. and im no salesman. i hate sales. i just love the plant and like to walk amongst them. now i gotta figure out how to sell the shit!

not the best picture.

i remember reading on here years ago and someone mentioned they couldnt get a certain cut to flower out right unless it was rootbound.

it made me scratch my head but figured it was a typo?
so i have this black lime bubba plant. i didnt give it much soil for some reason. must have ran out.
it seems to be putting on its best performance this round. and im kinda confused.

have any of you guys or gals found a plant that performs better with less soil volume?
any theories?

my cousin moved to seattle briefly. maybe 10 -12 years ago. him and his roomates were growing Bubba and Afgooey from clone.
there was some sort of falling out amongst the group and my cousin drove a Bubba clone and Afgooey clone back home to KC when he left.
later that year one of the 2 pollinated the other. he started smoking when he was like 10 years old. so sometimes you dont get the most specific details out of him.... But seeds were accidentally made. it was a blessing in disguise.
he shared a few with me. everytime i popped some new breeders creations i would also pop some of my cousins BubbaGoo seeds. they always hung with or outperformed my "store bought seeds"
i tried to inform him how great his accidental cross really was. But he didnt grow as many different strains as i did so i think he failed to see the comparisons i was seeing.
he did not keep these seeds in the fridge or freezer but instead in a safe (because his girlfriend is wildly unpredictable)
anyways, you guys know how this story goes from here... eventually i harped on him long enough about these seeds and proper storage. he handed them over to me. but germination has been extremely poor unfortunately. as i feared.
so with that long winded intro out of the way - i got some to grow! But But But. this iteration of seed seems to have segregated and spit out some uniquely different offspring.
i thought i may post some pics of these so you guys/gals could see what im seeing?

Afghooey is a Haze hybrid? Doesn't seem so out of the ordinary for a plant like that to popup in its children. What is surprising is males from a cross of two female clones. I think there might have been a fella around.
