I always do the seed cracking between the nail of my index finger and the nail of my thumb. between my teeth I always end up biting too far and demolishing the inside of the seed.

I try to determine where it will crack first, then put that side outward. with most seeds it works best when first soaked in water for a while, but sometimes with seeds with thin coats (like not fully matured seeds) I find it works better to crack before soaking, since after soaking the coat will go too soft and just give in/dent when you push instead of cracking.

I use this, can be found on ebay as Shell Opener Stainless Steel Nut Shell Cracker or similar. I got mine for under 5 bucks but now they are 10, inflation I guess. Most seeds that need to be cracked will not grow right if at all in my experience. It does work somewhat though.

I’m giving the few seeds in peat pellets a few more days, then I’ll fish them out and if they are still intact I will try the crack. I’m ordering seeds from BR and there final final (until final) seeds sale. In addition to more Thunk, (Mex x Haze) x (Skunk x Haze) and the Highland Mexican x Blueberry. I’m really excited about the latter grown into giant trees outdoors in my citrus/avocado grove. @ $200 a pack and given the rarity, I need to do everything I can to maximize those seeds sprouting. They won’t even get a look at till next season most likely.

as to the purpose of cracking, I find it really helps with very fresh seeds.
to speed up my breeding projects I always try to get to thenext generation as fast as possible, so often I germ seeds that have only been picked off the plant for a couple of days. with such fresh seeds germination is not always great, but I feel cracking greatly helps to get better germination on those fresh seeds.

I use the sunflower method described by Hammer. But I crack seeds after 4 days in the paper towel, not before. Not every seed needs cracking
It did help with more than 12 year old seed as well, not only with fresh seed
After 24 hours in water plus 4 days in paper towel, they are easy to crack with your teeth and I have got a lot of seed up this way

I will probably not ever flip these, I will the cuttings of course. I am growing them at 16/8 atm and they are starting to show sex at nodes(very small preflowers). I will take cuttings off them all once sexed and some for mother room and some for flower. They are outgrowing the tent and getting moved to mother room within the week.
