Haze Breeders/Growers....

Hmmm....
Firstly-Raco and Ur Hum;
You have my sincerest admiration for growing a variety that can run
almost six months of 12/12 with no guarantee (from seed) of finishing correctly indoors. It's a tricky thing to grow Pure(ish) tropical sativas under HID lighting, and the more land race and less hybridized the tropical variety is,the more of a PITA it is to grow inside.
Years and years ago, when I was originally running the whole group of (Original,GHS' ""black pack") Super Silver Haze (that my (imo) "picture-perfect indoor Haze" Mom came from,) seeds, looking for a perfect "haze" mom and trying to sort out any variables,I let a couple of those bitches go near 130 days.
As it turned out,at that length,it had been "over-flowered",and it generally lost all flavor and most of the high.
So.... Into the b-bags it went. :D
As it turned out,82-95 days was "peak" for that group-and it's as long,or longer a flower period, than almost anyone growing indoors wants to bother with-at least initially in their growing "career".
They see,I think,"Too many pratfalls,not enough "reward",quick enough",especially when compared to,say,C99,with a 50-55 day finish,eh?
I've found that people who grow for long periods of time seem to gravitate towards extreme sativas as they get really,REALLY comfortable with their ability to read plants and control their environment.
Years back,I first combined Sour Diesel and the above SSH to add a Sour "zest" to the very sharp and almost-picturesque,sandal-woody Haze flavor, and also to see if the Sour Diesel's 77-day flower time and slight indica lineage would shorten the SSH's "just a wee bit too long" flower time. It did, with some SSSDH plants finishing in under 80 days, the majority around day 80. Hazes when grown indoors don't produce copious seed by a long-shot,either,and by adding Sour D to the equation I also bred a haze hybrid that was more amiable to indoor breeding, should the grower wish to inbreed,or out-cross,the SSSDH. "Commercially",it's not easy for a smaller, indoor-based seed company to produce lots of tropical sativa seeds in one shot-and that's why you see a lack of SOLID,yet inexpensive haze hybrids available for purchase-If you do see something "haze" and cheap, one has to seriously consider the Source P1 stock before proceeding. Buying haze hybrids can be a shitshoot. Sam's Haze stock is THE Industry Standard, you cannot ever go wrong with Sam's Hazes. Shanti, next.
This is a really nice thread, and some really nice plants.
Thanks gang!

Cheers!

Rez,

I always appreciate receiving compliments, especially from long time breeders like yourself. I do have a clone of the Old Timer's Haze being flowered indoors (at about 9 weeks now). I had to transplant into a larger container today as she was showing some N deficiencies and liquid nutes are not well tolerated by these extreme sativas. For me, the indoor grow of Haze is to select what I intend to flower outdoors. I can gain a sense of the plants characteristics and select for those plants I wish to explore further. Raco, it seems, has truly mastered the art of growing these ladies indoors. I am impressed beyond belief with his skill. I think everyone interested should learn what they can from the likes of Raco.

I have every expectation that your SSSDH is some truly world class cannabis. I have been very pleased with growing your Sour Diesel and Strawberry Diesel and hope to do so again in the future - so I know you can select very well! I'm looking forward to popping some of the SSSDH I bought this summer and running it along side other Haze genetics (Old Timer's, Tom Hill's, Seedsman - which I believe comes from Sam's line). I'm sure some delicious hybrids could be made with a select SSSDH crossed to these old Haze lines. This would inject some well needed Hybrid vigor into old sativa blood. I've only got one pack of the SSSDH (unfortunate earlier order lost) but from what I've seen, I am confident I can find my keeper.

Cheers,

Great thread, nice chat everyone. A lot of choice these days in the Haze dept. Sam, Shanti, Tom Hill, Ace Seeds even Rez. But this pic stood out. Not strictly speaking Haze (or is it?) La Nina by erbium = Thai x Columbian x Brazilian x Keralan

"Purple" and thus that is where the controversy starts. :whistling:

I've been away from this thread for too long due to the sudden and unexpected passing of my Father in Law just before Christmas. I am all caught up and just want to say, thanks to all for the contributions. This thread is a great one and the content both verbal and pictorial is a testament to the passion you all have surrounding this beautiful, exotic and often misunderstood strain.

So to catch you up on my lonely outdoor Old Timer Haze, she is growing into week 17 of 12 hours or less light. Seems to be close to the finish. Per Rez's comments, I will keep a close eye on her and not let her go too long. As for aroma, she has a strong one when rubbed up against. Some classic green (thai) haze aromas. Very spicy-peppery. Some wood, but also metal astringents. Soft floral background in there but the spice rules the day. Very wispy airy buds with nice resin production. I had to fight some cold and rain and she showed a few very small spots of botrytis, which I trimmed out and cleaned. Seems to be fine now with milder weather expected through probable finish.

Pictures above from about 10 days ago.

These are from a few days ago.

I have a pack of the Ace Old Timer's 3F x 6M which I want to explore to find some red/purple traits. Another pack of the 1F x 6M are buried deep in the vault since I look to have a very nice green representation of this line. I will also select from Tom Hill's and Seedsman and as mentioned from Rez's SSSDH. The goal is to have 4-5 select mother's by May next year to clone, flip to 12/12 indoors and move outdoors once weather catches up. I should be able to finish all by or before New Year 2012 if everything goes according to plan. Select in/outbreeding with best males for the future of course.

These classic sativas are a labor of love. I wish many more years on this earth to you all who hope to explore them well.

Here is a sativa I got going. I have no idea what kind of strain it is(any guess?). She is starting to purple and smell like citrus. One of the best plants i've ever grown.

Nirvana's Haze is nice and cheap. From Positronics origin, not very inbred, so some original variation. Its hybrids are nice too. Like this spicy & sour NLxHaze:

:D

Only parts of the plant went purple and it doesn't translate well under red light.

before its final dark cycle -

Sorry for the cross-post, but figured you folks would have some insight into an idea I had...

SSH is [Haze 'C' x NL5] x [Haze 'C' x Skunk #1], right? Do y'all think it'd be a good idea to cross an SSH momma to the Sam's Original Haze x Skunk #1 dad (O'Hunk) I saved?

That'd be:
([Haze 'C' x NL5] x [Haze 'C' x Skunk #1]) x (Original Haze x Skunk #1)

That's like, SSH³! Not only would it increase the haze genes to 66.6% (I think...), it'd also add a much needed infusion of Haze variety since the Haze used by Sam in his cross is undoubtedly different than the 'A' and 'C' used by Shanti. All the while, that 66.6% haze is kept primarily on the male side, meaning (if I understand correctly) that the structure would more often follow the mom and therefore lead to more 'manageable' plants...

Then again, I'm just a closet hack - Any problems you folks see with my logic?

What traits does your Sam's Original Haze x Skunk #1 male possess?

Most of the Sam's Original Haze x Skunk #1's that I have seen are very very very Haze leaning.

Even if structure would follow the mother, you are putting what I am assuming (sorry I have to because I haven't seen your Sam's Original Haze x Skunk #1) is a very long flowering very Haze dominant male along the same lines as the mother back into her gene pool (even assuming Sam Haze is very different then Haze "A" and Haze "C").

Thus creating a very long flowering, low yielding, very Sativa variety.

Please keep us informed once you have done the breeding. I would love to follow what you do with the offspring of this mating.

:)

Here is the Old Timer's Haze in it's last days,

Here she is a bit later.

Love the smell in the jar. Strong peppery spice with citrus and a mentholated kiss. Strong smells, no big yielder, but looks to be some desirable product.

hi all,
glad i found this thread..some great shots and plants here..

I am growing/have recently harvested some Bubblegum (clone) X Haze plants.
BGH#1, the first one taken down, went 92 days from seed. It was a broad leaved, dark, colorful strain - it smelled like a muddy strawberry field.
IT smelled so much while hanging there was a strong berry smell everywhere.
IT IS THE STRONGEST pot I or my father, who has been smoking for 36 years, have ever smoked or grown.

It blows out of the water Cheese clone, Sweet skunk, tangerine haze, schrom, abusive's og kush, east coast sour diesel... all which i've grown... this plant was some true one hit shit. It taste like, and the effect was like, smoking hash.

It's the only pot - ever - where I pack a bowl to smoke before bed, I wake up, and there's WEED in the bowl - from last night! Tastes like incense, and a strawberry garden after a thunder storm, Ozone smell and all. Keeper for sure..popping more seeds now

Bubblegum X Haze is some strong stuff.
I asked my sister if she wanted to grow some plant, I guessted a Blueberry clone, she said "No, I want to grow that strawberry shit!" meaning the first BubbleGum X Haze.

I love Haze and always have one in the corner of the room.

Mr Nice SSH, went 20 weeks 12/12, this pic from day 78 12/12

Sam Skunkmans Original Haze x Skunk, went 20 weeks 12/12

Mr Nice Nevilles Haze Mango, went 14 weeks, some of the strongest pot I have ever smoked.

2 leaves showing differences in SSH pheno's.
