I am curious about that also. I think that alot of it is based on the BOEL's experience in Maui. Maybe the variety of Colombian they brought in didn't like weather on the north shore or upcountry Maui. Who's to say other Colombians (such as lowland Colombians) didn't work in other Hawaii microclimates. BOEL weren't the only growers in Hawaii in the late 60's on ward.I am curious as to some of the reasons it seems Mexican landrace was favored over Colombian in the history of Hawaiian growing and breeding. Is Colombian really that much more prone to mold in general or are there other reasons? Some of this curiosity stems from the fact I live at higher elevation in upper Puna.
