Hash oil techniques and solvents for non BHO hash oil?

troutman

Seed Whore
Peroxide Forming Solvents

A significant number of laboratory solvents can undergo autoxidation under normal storage conditions to form unstable and potentially dangerous peroxide by-products. This process is catalyzed by light and heat and occurs when susceptible materials are exposed to atmospheric oxygen. Molecular structure is the primary factor relating to a material’s potential for hazardous peroxide formation.

By the time you actually start your extractions how many of your solvents will be affected?

Get to work. :whip:

The iso-pentane from Right Price Chemicals arrived. Superb packaging as usual, see the pictures.

Four liters for $175, $188.01 total.

https://www.rightpricechemicals.com/buy-isopentane-online-99-percent.html

When placing orders from RPC it's been about two weeks from order placement to shipping. I've been checking out using PayPal without setting up a formal account.

It has a slight hydrocarbon odor, though it evaporates immediately taking all the odor with it.

If you want the closest solvent to butane this is it, otherwise pentane's less expensive.

"Isopentane, C5H12, also called methylbutane or 2-methylbutane, is a branched-chain alkane with five carbon atoms. Isopentane is an extremely volatile and extremely flammable liquid at room temperature and pressure. The normal boiling point is just a few degrees above room temperature and isopentane will readily boil and evaporate away on a warm day."

Amazon now shows HiMedia's ethyl propionate in stock. My back order for two 500ml bottles has been updated to show it'll ship in two days.

If anyone else wants some, place your order and wait, Amazon doesn't charge you until it ships.

https://www.amazon.com/HiMedia-GRM2...d=1497458804&sr=8-1&keywords=ethyl+propionate

HiMedia's ethyl propionate product information sheet at their site states greater than 99% purity.

Ethyl propionate is a compound with formula C2H5(C2H5COO). It is the ethyl ester of propionic acid. It has a pineapple-like odor. Some fruits like kiwis and strawberries naturally contain ethyl propionate in small amounts.

Properties:
Chemical formula C5H10O2
Molar mass 102.1317 g/mol
Appearance colourless liquid
Density 0.884325 g/cm3
Melting point −73.6 °C (−100.5 °F; 199.6 K)
Boiling point 98.9 °C (210.0 °F; 372.0 K)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethyl_propionate

I found an ET(30) for it of 37.3 in the article, "Solvent polarity scales: determination of new ET(30) values for 84 organic solvents" by José P. Cerón-Carrascoa, Denis Jacquemina, Christian Laurencea, Aurélien Planchata, Christian Reichardt, and Khadija Sraïdid where it is listed as ethyl propanoate. Cross referencing an ET(30) of 37.3 at Table 7-3 of Reichardt's Solvents and Solvent Effects in Organic Chemistry provides an approximate placing on my solvents list arranged as to relative polarity.

It shipped 6/15/17.

Large selection, I checked out a four liter jug of MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether) for $60.74, $94.24 total via PayPal.

Very non-polar (see my list) with a very low boiling point,

"As a solvent:
MTBE is extensively used in industry as a safer alternative to diethyl ether (which is commonly used in academic research) as the tert-butyl group prevents MTBE from forming potentially explosive peroxides. It is also used as a solvent in academic research, although it is less commonly used than diethyl ether."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methyl_tert-butyl_ether

I've been looking for MTBE since I've been examining the FDA USP <467> Residual Solvent list. They also carry MIBK, and many of the others I've already found here and there.

If the site still says under construction, call in your order. I just called to check on mine, and it didn't go through, even though the PayPal payment was made. Also the prices have gone up, though not by much.

I had to reorder over the phone, and while I was at it I ordered a four liter jug of MIBK. When these two arrive I will have completed the procurement stage of my research.

The ethyl propionate was left at my door, see the quote for details.

Gentle sour pineapple odor, evaporates fast.

i don’t understand the point of this thread....???

The point of this thread is described in full in the lead post.

From Rick Simpson:

WHAT KIND OF SOLVENTS SHOULD I USE?
There are also many other solvents which could probably be used to perform an extraction effectively such as acetone, but the only solvents that I have direct experience with are ether, naphtha and 99% isopropyl alcohol, therefore I do not feel qualified to tell the public what other solvents they can use.

From Gray Wolf:

https://skunkpharmresearch.com/simple-alkanes-alcohols-and-ethers/

There was no solvent selection guide for essential oil extraction previously.

All the solvents were researched, sourced, and purchased for the sole purpose of creating this data base.

the point of the OP was to find a solvent that was cheaper to use then butane...right?? you are spending tons of $ on fancy non-butane solvents..why?

Far from the only factor I'm anxiously awaiting results for.

Many of these are untested. If you've got any interest in creating your own extracts, these results may hold treasures.

The Megahome water distiller he uses is available in a reduced wattage model for ethanol distillation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnjaBExt04g

I ordered an inexpensive water distiller,

https://www.ebay.com/itm/4L-Stainle...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

Simple to mod, put a standard plug on the fan cord so it can be plugged in separately (or get a second appliance cord,) and then simply plug the bottom section into a Variac, or other controller to vary the wattage. I've seen pictures of it disassembled, looks like it delivers full power to the heater until the overheat sensor trips ending the cycle, the reset is the power switch. I'll take it apart to check for sure when I get it.

$65

I believe this list will be also serve as a good start to "variety specific" post-processing too. For ex. Maybe a profile with more alcohol substituted terps will be better preserved using different solvent(s) than something that is terpinolene, or myrcene, or limonene dominant...Im experimenting myself, and will share findings.

Do not order from the American Scientific (Oregon) site!! I had to have PayPal get my money back, the site is abandoned by American Scientific.

On the other hand they just hit my checking account for $275 for the 4L jugs of MTBE and MIBK I ordered over the phone with no email it'd shipped, I don't even know if I'll need to sign for it. No complaints, MTBE is unobtainium to the general public. :tiphat:

The density (specific gravity) of pure heptane is about 0.680 at 20C/68F, I saw 0.6815 @ 30C/86F, see the picture.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heptane

As I've posted up previously in this thread, I have a number of these specific gravity hydrometers to cover the range of solvents I've acquired. Here's a table showing the densities of some common solvents, notice the specific gravity is unique to the solvent, locking in it's identity,

I'm working on it..... A few pics in the mean time.

There are three power cutoffs with this model, the Megahome distiller has just the reset and a fuse.

In the overview pic you can see on the side of the can the 115C/239F Power reset temp cutout, in the middle is the 150C/302F over temp cutout, and the pic showing me holding a wire soldered to a ring terminal is the fail safe cutout (the solder melts letting the wire go free - it's not crimped.)

I'm eliminating much of it and adding a thermocouple, full details in a few days.

What I want everyone to see is the inside of the Power reset temp cutout. The fit of the reset shaft is sloppy, worse than I imagined, and the back side isn't a perfect seal either. It's being eliminated, I don't need it for my purposes, and it's a potential ignition source. Why I suggest examining any electrical device before repurposing it.

I doubt anyone has had a fire from recycling ethanol in these off the shelf, but if you have the know how, you can do better. I'm J-B Welding the over heat cutout directly to the middle of the can right now, hot rodding it so to speak.

The condenser is also getting a thermocouple temp sensor.

Same plan, power meter > Variac > distiller with temp readings.

Btw, I received some exact replacement seal/gaskets, two for ten bucks direct from China,
