Grow shed vs attic grow

That's legit castrau5. However I have a trussed roof not a hand stacked roof. So attics kinda rough I like ur idea. I actually like the idea of a mini split. But have to see what the costs are for building the shed as I am doing probably 12 in walls and sealed room. This my first attempt at growing but I have done enough things to know if u set it up right the first time it's one less thing to worry about. Power here is cheap 11 cent a kW. But I have solar so it's free. I have 17.75 kW system on my home so it's free

Your top tier pricing is gonna change your gsme plan! I love cheap power. Build that shed with 10' or higher walls and run gavitas on 5x5 footprints. With the cheaper power the non air cooled won't kill you. I'd still insulate the shit out of the building though.

Minis are the right way to go for sure. So much more reliable. Window bangers suck in the winter, and they aren't great in the summer (obviously much better than no ac, but still)

I spent a whole summer a few years ago trying to get an attic under 100 degrees. It was a complete waste of time, not to mention ALL those trips up and down the stairs.

What I was saying is that I have solar panels that generate more power than I use right now. The system was overbuilt for the house and shop so I have no electricity bill

castrau5,
I've had that fan in pic 2 on my Amazon wish list for a few months. How do you like it? Does it oscillate or is it just adjustable. Is it very quiet. Does it vibrate? Thanks for the info. -granger

Dude, those panels won't do shit it takes 5 just to run a 1000 watt light

Vs. grow outdoors?... Maybe look into LED's. remember if your AC fails so do you.

I like it. It pushes plenty of air for my needs and is quit. Does vibrate a little though so u put foam under it. It doesn't oscillate just folds back. I picked up a few small honeywells same style just smaller and they suck. Super noisy and vibrate a lot but I guess that's what u get when you buy fans at a dollar store..

Does this sound like you?- "I just love carrying gallon jugs of water up the attic stairs".

I don't know how visible your scene is to the neighbors, but give consideration to the visibility of the pathway leading to this future grow shed. If a neighbor can watch you repeatedly going to and fro from this outbuilding it will give the game away for sure.

This is a super good point! 2 or 3 trips a day to the same outbuilding could be odd. Also moving dirt in and out.

Fwiw though, this guys deal sounded rural and out of sight.

i would not go attic unless you are interested in perhaps a real attic renovation in the near future... such as adding a dormer to your place.

its just alot of work to rebuilt a shitty thoughtlessly layed out attic space, and get it to a somewhat reasonable living space. most cheap homes in the south have hopelessly low roof pitches ( no snow load) to begin with, which is a huge no starter for attic renovations.
most attic reovations should include a refoof job, unless your existing roof is reletivly new... moving wiring, removing blown in insulation, and retrofitting to a roof deck insulated home is a huge PITA unless you shell out for spray foam.

say you had like 60 grant so spend however, what you would do in most cases is... renovate, moving wiring to where it needs to be, renovate the structure to accomidate the new living space, renovate the roof to accommodate windows and doors or what ever, then you would flash and batt, or blow in blanket....

depending on the roof peak height, you may or may not have to add foam sheathing, or spray foam the entire cavity, to get the r40 you really ought to have( minimum) in a roof assembly down here in the south.

Thanks for all the info. My shed would be out of the sight of any neighbors. It would be in my fences garden. So it has a 6 ft fence around it. My panels are legit. They run four separate air conditioners in the summer. My meter still turns backwards when it is 109 degrees outside. They aren't the shit from harbor freight. The bonus of the shed is that it's about twenty feet from power and water. I am definitely leaning this direction. My buddy said he can get me a used ac system for a 1500 sq fr house for 500 bux. He would hook it up to run dual zone. It would be outside on a small slab so I don't know I feel about it. Any suggestions I have a lot of cost getting this shed built so I don't know if I want to spend the cash on the mini split at the moment.

eh, whats wrong with a visible AC? treat this shed as if its a detached garage, or perhaps a wood shop or some such thing.

a split ac unit is heaps less expensive and far more versatile than a mini split. you can get a 3 ton goodman 15 seer split unit for like 3 grand last i checked.

a split system air handler, with a legit blower can push through a good quality media air cleaner. huge boon imo.

regardless
you should get a solid budget before you even think of building an insulated shed. you are looking at over 10 grand for even a smallish insulated shed. if it were me, id put the thing on 8" sonotubes with footings, like 16" off the ground. 2x8 or 2x8 floor joists... ram in some fat bats, foam boards and a sub floor, then build an 8" wall from larson trusses or double studs and blow in some cellulose.

you can actually build the roof truss from light gauge steel members. it will be very light, and easy to install by yourself.

roof should be small in area, so id just build one of those exposed faster steel roofs. should be very easy to handle.

i HIGHLY suggest you read up on some of these "tiny houses" people are building in their backyards, and adopt some of their techniques, sans the bathroom fixtures and shit .

i dropped the 10 grand number because this is what folks who are building these strange 100 sqft homes are hitting with ease.

since this shed will likely lack sinks and shitters and trim work, vinyl windows, nice cedar siding and shit like ovens... it should cost significantly less per square foot, but still i would NOT be suprised if you hit 10 grand on a small 20x10 space very quickly.

I hear what u are saying yea it can get expensive quick. However I will do most of the work myself. I was going to double frame the walls so they are 12 in thick. Use blown in fiberglass to get my R rating up there same with the roof Tell me more about the trusses u mentioned. I like the solitude idea maybe a 4 x 6 frame. It just pour a stem wall for a raised foundation. Should be cheaper than a slab. The ac, power and plumbing I'm not worried about because I can do that. My buddy is a ac tech and will help me with that

i'd listen to queequeg152 real good. i built a 7x20 area inside a metal outbuilding. all said and done including grow equipment came in about $8,000. if you in a dry climate you can save some cash with evap cooling.
