Thanks for posting the info about the clovers and stuff. I like the idea of added porosity, my coco mix definitely starts to get compacted at the top later in flower and makes watering a bit of a pain. Maybe adding some small stuff like clover would help with this.

Clever Plants 'Chat' Over Their Own Network

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2007) — Recent research from Vidi researcher Josef Stuefer at the Radboud University Nijmegen reveals that plants have their own chat systems that they can use to warn each other.

Therefore plants cannot be considered boring and passive organisms that just stand there waiting to be cut off or eaten up. Many plants form internal communications networks and are able to exchange information efficiently.

Chat network

Many herbal plants such as strawberry, clover, reed and ground elder naturally form networks. Individual plants remain connected with each other for a certain period of time by means of runners. These connections enable the plants to share information with each other via internal channels. They are therefore very similar to computer networks. But what do plants want to chat to each other about?

Recently Stuefer and his colleagues were the first to demonstrate that clover plants warn each other via the network links if enemies are nearby. If one of the plants is attacked by caterpillars, the other members of the network are warned via an internal signal. Once warned, the intact plants strengthen their chemical and mechanical resistance so that they are less attractive for advancing caterpillars.

Thanks to this early warning system, the plants can stay one step ahead of their attackers. Experimental research has revealed that this significantly limits the damage to the plants.

Viruses

However there are two sides to the coin. That is not just the case for the Internet but also for plants. It appears that plant viruses can use the infrastructure present to rapidly spread through the connected plants. The infection of one plant therefore leads to the infection of all plants within the network.
This research clearly reveals that the general image of plants is a poor reflection of reality. Who had now suspected that the majority of plants around us are constantly networking?
This research is part of the Vidi project 'Plant Intranets. Costs, benefits, & risks of communication pathways in clonal plant networks' that was funded by NWO and the Radboud University Nijmegen.

This thread is great, I am going to get some clover and grass seed after reading that.

I have used the Neptunes Crab myself and it is a great product at a great price (for me but I am not far from them) The results are better after the second run, when it starts breaking down. It didn't eliminate the gnats day one, but there are none left now. This summer I have used mostly lobster shells, mainly because lobster is delicious and shells come free with purchase but I will be sticking with neptunes in the long run. I can gather crab shells free where I am at, but at that price it's worth it to buy them. It would take a week to get a bag that size, and you need a place to dry them.. PITA trust me.

I also started looking into some of Steiner's writings, and it is right up my alley. I have only read the first few pages of Knowledge of the Higher Worlds here and I can tell I am going to like it.

Thanks Chief!

Thanks Chief!

yeah all those calcium carbonate items are really suited for a recycled soil it seems

and nice work on the pdf books of Steiners.... I just found me a way to save lots of money on amazon. :)

- I'm currently reading Man and His Symbols by Carl Gustaf Jung _ I might need to read this one once or thrice :)

1000th Post - Intro into the Hermetic Philosophy

1000th Post - Intro into the Hermetic Philosophy

I wanted to celebrate my 1000th post by sharing something random but something that is near and dear to me. The study of Hermetics...

Now I won't go too deep but I will leave the door open for those with "ears to hear and eyes to see". It is the nature of the world unfolded for the mind. All taught by a mysterious figure(s) by the name of Hermes Trismegistus aka Mercurius ter Maximus, Thrice greatest or Thoth (where the word thought came from).

If you study the esoteric (hidden) sciences long enough you will find him at the root of ancient teachings. This is the "key" to the knowledge that is held back from you. Reading wiki won't help you on this topic.

-----------------------------------------------

hidden  [hid-n]
Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: unseen, secret
Synonyms: QT, abstruse, buried, clandestine, cloaked, close, clouded, concealed, covered, covert, cryptic, dark, disguised, eclipsed, esoteric, hermetic, hermetical, imperceivable, in the dark, indiscernible, invisible, latent, masked, mysterious, mystic, mystical, obscure, occult, out of view, private, recondite, screened, secluded, sequestered, shadowy, shrouded, surreptitious, ulterior, undercover, underground, undetected, undisclosed, unexposed, unknown, unrevealed, veiled, withheld

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica][FONT=Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif]Master of all arts and sciences, perfect in all crafts, Ruler of the Three Worlds, Scribe of the Gods, and Keeper of the Books of Life, Hermes Mercurius Trismegistus-the Three Times Great, the 'First Intelligencer' was regarded by the ancient Egyptians as the embodiment of the Universal Mind.

All the fundamental and basic teachings embedded in the esoteric teachings of every race may be traced back to Hermes. He was the father of Occult Wisdom, the founder of Astrology, the discoverer of Alchemy. He was an Egyptian priest, the wisest of them all, supreme as philosopher for his vast knowledge, as priest for his holiness of life and practice of the divine cults, and worthy of kingly dignity as administrator of the laws. He founded the city of Hermopolis and was the messenger of the Gods called Thoth. He authored the Hermetic Books containing 36,525 volumes which contained the entire Egyptian philosopy, 4 books on Astrology, 10 books called the Hieratic on Law, 10 books on sacred rites and observances, 2 on music; and the rest on writing, cosmography, geography, mathematics and measures, and training of priests. Six remaining books concerned medicine and the body discussing diseases, instruments, the eyes, and women.

Most important of all are three works: the oldest is the 'Divine Pymander' which contained the divine wisdom and the secrets of the universe as revealed to Hermes. It consists on 17 fragments all in one work. The second book of the Divine Pymander was 'Poimmandres'or 'The Vision', it relates Hermes mystical vision, cosmogony, and the secret sciences of the Egyptians and spiritual development of the Soul. The third work is known as 'The Emerald Tablet' or 'The Emerald Table'(Smaragdine Table). According to legend, The Emerald Tablet is said to have been discovered in a caved tomb, clutched in the hands of the corpse of Hermes Trismegistus. Regarded as the most revered magical document in Western occultism, The Emerald Tablet is the foundation of astrology and alchemy. The most significant part of The Emerald Tablet is within its opening tractate:

" I am Hermes Trismegistus, One in Essence, Three in Substance. I am Hermes, the Universal Agent or Primordial Life Force, My Three Aspects are the Male, Female, and Male-Female Principles."

" Know then the Greatest Secret of the Universe: As Above,So Below - As Within, So Without".

" It is true and most certain that: That which Above reflects that which is Below. Know this to understand the secret of what is infinitely large, infinitely small and in between, and the Nature, Form, Structure and Function of all things."

" That which is Within reflects that which is Without, know this to understand the Secret of Creation. The inner Divine Fire of Thought creates the multiplicity of form and texture on earth. Thus, water, fire and spirit mixed by wind are contained within the substance of earth."

" With utmost concentration, awareness and focus, discriminate the Spiritous Earth thus: seperate the Gross from the Subtle, first by gentle heat, then by great fire. Thus, the Subtle ascends to heaven, the Gross descends to earth, Above and Below are equalized: Within and Without are transmuted. From darkness is born the New Light and the New Energy that penetrates all substances: the Universal Solvent of Creation."

" This is why I am Hermes Trismegistus: I know the Secret of the Three-In-One, thus is performed the Great Work, the mystery of the Great Akh-Nun-Ra!"

Important to students and practitioners of Sacred Sound is the KYBALION which contains the tenets of hermetic philosophy known as The Seven Hermetic Principles or the Seven Laws of Hermes Mercurius Trismegistus.

" The principles of Truth are seven; he who knows these, understandingly, possesses the Magic Key before whose touch all the Doors of the Temple fly open."

1) THE PRINCIPLE OF MENTALISM
2) THE PRINCIPLE OF CORRESPONDENCE
3) THE PRINCIPLE OF VIBRATION
4) THE PRINCIPLE OF POLARITY
5) THE PRINCIPLE OF RHYTHM
6) THE PRINCIPLE OF CAUSE AND EFFECT
7) THE PRINCIPLE OF GENDER

The great Third Principle of Vibration embodies the truth that motion is manifest in everything in the universe, that nothing is at rest, that everything moves, vibrates, and circles. Every thought, emotion or mental state has its corresponding rate and mode of vibration. And by an effort of the Will of the person, or of other persons, these mental states may be reproduced, just as a musical tone may be reproduced by causing an instrument to vibrate at a certain rate. By bringing together the First and Third Hermetic Law the ancient formula of: visualization+vibration=manifestation may be induced.

If you don't mind, could we hear some more about these mint teas? Mint is easy enough to do year-round (in a windowsill, even), but I'd love to learn more about their anti-critter/anti-fungus properties..

Do you mean the specific chemical compounds that are created by plants?

No thanks. :tiphat: In the most sincere way - like a dumb kid looking at sensei, knowing he's thoroughly outsmarted and incapable of processing the answer.. ;)

Chief quoted what I was looking for - just for application & the general concept..

But I think I did miss something - is this primary function a miticide, or a fungicide?

chief - those plants are looking great for a vertical setup. :good:

Here's the Reader's Digest version:

The flowers on a tree or plant, generally, provides the means for pollination which will create something - seeds, fruit (ovary for seeds), vegetables, etc.

A plant has two 'brain centers' - the roots and the apical meristem. These centers control the production of compounds (the technical term is Secondary Metabolites) and flowers will produce compounds that attract pollinators (what we call beneficial insects) as well as compounds which repel herbivore insects (aphids, spider mites, etc.) These compounds are very simple hydrocarbon chains, i.e. Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen in different formulas as well as structure.

When the flower has been pollinated then the plant begins to produce compounds which fight off pathogenic fungi - like Powdery Mildew, Black Scab, et al. - there are over 3,600 strains of what the layman call Powdery Mildew.

Many, many of the synthetic pesticides and fungicides are exact copies of these plant compounds except to extend their effectiveness they are formulated so that they take some period of time to degrade rendering them harmless (**snerk**) but at their core is the model from different plant compounds.

For example the pesticide Requiem is copied from the compounds that the Epazote plant produces.

That's pretty much it!

Thanks CC

The explanation really broke it down for me. I remember my HS biology teacher explaining the concept that all things are essentially one-purpose-driven -- to reproduce.

So if I'm understanding your post correctly, once a plant "feels" (via the application of this-or-that) that it may be knocked up, it hulks up its defense gimmick, ..

? Pardon my redcneckian regurg. ;)

Anyway, I really appreciate your input and your attention.
