Well thanks. I don't feel like an intellectual very often, but I guess that's pretty subjective! But I do try and avoid couchlock most of the time - in all areas, not just weed...
Here's a few shots of the Goldfinger on my friend's patio on October 26th in sunny (cough) England. I estimate about two weeks to go - it'll be finished, or the cold will finish it. Either way, it's a great performance for a mostly sativa hybrid, and looks to be pretty resistant to British weather too. If it can survive this, it'll be fine indoors, and I suspect quite compact too.
It was very breezy today, so I had to use flash on the close-up, but there's clearly resin appearing. Also the smell is adding some more floral to the mix - the 'bluebells' smell of one of my phenos is appearing - really gorgeous:
Hey Elevator excellent thread and amazing results you got there. I do hope you are able to continue the line in some form or fashion.
I wanted to ask you where you got the MAlawi Gold seeds from? Ive tried growing out Seedsman's Malawi Gold, but i couldnt get any to germinate. Seems like you have had no problems in this regard. I have heard only great things about Malawi Gold, in general, and i was sorely disappointed i couldnt get any to pop.
Im currently running more 'commercialn or dutch' hybrids, but ill get back around to african landraces after i do some vietnamese genetics(i just love the idea of 'travelin' across the world with different strains)...anyway im rambling, but i do truly love to see the effort put into Sativas.
Red Eye - it was indeed the Seedsman line I used, which I think are ultimately from African Seeds. I got a lot of males in the pack - only three females, one of which was really lanky. But the other two were great, bushy and fairly compact phenos, so I was really keen to get started with those. I've also dumped some of my 'MoFlo' (Flo F2) pollen on both Goldfinger phenos I had, so that should turn out to be an even more Flo-dominant version.
I'm hoping this outdoor pheno will last another couple of weeks if there's no serious frost, which would be ten - that's pretty close to what I was hoping for indoors, but I never thought we could get one to flower properly outdoors in England. Just goes to show what can happen when you just dive in at the deep end...
High' E-man! finally i got my first sample flowers from your Goldfinger that was grown from a friend of mine. i don't remember so well but i think that i gave him the MG1 x Flo2 seeds ...anyway, here is a pic from a little goldfingi
i grew both the Malawi gold & the Flo ...the Flo father in this cross made a shorter flowering period and a bit denser calyx structure. The smoke is actually very nice, the malawi is kinda dominating in the flavor but also the floral aroma comes out well. It's not super potent though, that's probably because the buds/trics are not so ful-matured (this year we had a strange short outdoor season) ...the high is easy controllable... but the "up" is good, definitely in the sativa spectrum. overall i would say it's a very cool sativa cross with high potentials.
Hey XyZ, that looks pretty good there! Nice bud! And sounds about right on the aroma/flavour too - really good to see that, thanks.
I got the grim news yesterday that my friend has chopped his plant down with two weeks to go - he claimed 'it wasn't going to do any more'. I just put my head in my hands, basically. I asked him last week to give it two more weeks at least, as we have night-time temps of around 6-9 C at the moment, so no danger of frost, and sun all day. I also told him that the last two weeks are the most crucial for buildup of bud and resin coverage. He didn't listen.
So that's the end of my advice phase in this particular direction, as I'm clearly wasting my time and money visiting plants that won't be allowed to complete - really sad (and pretty pointless considering the time he put into it up till then), but there you go. I'm just glad I have a mother in my cabinet now.
yes the fingaz are pretty nice for this time... i was wondering about that as well, perhaps it's a more early pheno? the aroma is a really cool mix from both lines, maybe a bit more malawi/woody but i definitely feel the flo character inside Good work E-man, i believe that this cross would be a great party weed (strong sativa punch) if flowered indoor till the end or even best if grown under the intense tropical sun.
Here's the Goldfinger male just beginning to drop pollen at last:
My only disappointment with this pheno is that there's no purple highlights on the male flowers, which might have signified a dominant purple trait as my Flo males appear to have. Still, it's the only good male produced, and it looks good on all other aspects, so it'll have to do. I'm not complaining - it's a great-looking plant - and what big balls...
So hopefully this should drop for the next fortnight at least - my friend is cool about leaving it as long as possible, so I should get a fair amount of pollen from this beauty!
My friend's bringing me a vial of Goldfinger pollen down shortly - the plant's still going, but he didn't want to leave it lying on glass for days on end. But I should be able to get another vial next weekend, which should keep me going for a while.
The remaining Goldfinger female I have will go into flower next week, and I will definitely be dropping some pollen on it...
I managed to grab a little more pollen from the Goldfinger male a couple of days ago, as it's beginning to drop freely now:
I'll go up again in a day or two for some more, as it may be a while before I can grow any more males anywhere. But this should be enough to get me to F2. I only have one female pheno at the moment, which is a (MG1 X Flo1) specimen - I haven't flowered this cross yet, as both my last ones were using the Flo2 father. This female looks to be an early-flowering pheno, so if the flavour and aroma are OK,then it should be worth putting some pollen on it. But I'll save a little pollen for a future test.
My friend with the outdoor plant is bring some round tomorrow for a test smoke, and I'm hoping the pineapple/bluebells/ginger smell is still there, as that's the one I'm after...
Great news! I am glad to see that Goldfinger will live on! I still have a few beans left. I grow them out again when the days get longer so hopefully they'll veg a little!
I still have one nice bud from the mg1Xf1 plant that had all the sprouts in it! The sprouts are growing well too!
Oh, it'll live on all right - I've still got enough seeds of the F1 stage to take it on further, so this female (or male) doesn't have to be THE ONE - the male especially will be very hard to judge at this stage, as it was the only pheno grown out, but it did have all the traits physically I was after, except the purpling.
The female is interesting becaue I think indoors it will be very manageable height-wise, whilst still producing the long colas, though I don't have the room in my cab - will need some training, definitely. But if it's a ten-week flowerer, whilst still maintaining the other target traits, then it has to be worth a try at least. Obviously I've got plenty of Goldfinger X MoFlo seeds too, which will be even better indoors I would guess, as the Flo component will be much higher there.
Oh, and I couldn't resist dobbing a bit of Goldfinger pollen on the most sativa of my three Grape Krush F2s - that one has an insane sherbet/sour grape/blackcurrant aroma, and a more branchy, cola-producing structure, which I think will go well with the male. 'Grapefinger'...?
Grapefinger sounds like another great cross! Should be VERY tasty thats for sure!
I am going to be growing some more of the cross I made with the Goldfinger. The seeds I made with the mystery plant are not germinating very well. It was my first crack at making seeds, so hopefully the Goldfinger cross will have more viable seeds.
There are a few pictures of the (mg1Xf1) X (sd iblXog bx1) in my grow diary thread. (Link in my sig.) The beans that germed inside the bud!
