'Goldfinger' - Malawi Gold X Flo

Muddy - Thanks for the kind words - given my amateur status at breeding, that feels good. I'd love to inbreed this to at least F3, but I don't have the space here at all, and outdoors is extremely difficult at 53N!

I'm hoping I can persuade an imaginative local commercial grower or two to take some, or let me use a corner of their room to try out some phenos. Risky, and not easy to control either, but I don't have many options open to me until I'm rich, and can rent the place I'd really like, with a purpose-built laboratory...:)

The most exciting part of the cross for me was being able to use the Flo as an 'indica' for structural purposes, but not losing any sativa traits in the smoke. Realistically, there aren't that many sativa-dom hybrids out there that will flower in 8-9 weeks and still keep an indica profile, so I was really pleased that it seemed to work, even with the limited pool I've been able to test so far.

I have a Malawi cross too, and in very limited breeding am selecting for shorter flowering and smaller stature. I like the high, it isn't immediate, and it doesn't block up cerebral activity much, but it feels pleasant and seems to enhances the senses particularly auditory. Since I didn't breed it I can't really say if they're Malawi traits or not though. One thing though, they didn't like being rootbound at all, and seemed nute sensitive the first go run. Again can't be sure that's due to the Malawi but have my suspicions.

Based partly on your thread though, I am considering the Flo myself for inbreeding and selecting and outcrossing it to landraces, heirlooms, and a modern hybrid or two here in the cannabis closet of love.

That sounds about right - at least that's what mine was like. I was pleasantly surprised by the relatively short stature of these in the end - 3 feet is perfectly manageable IMO. They didn't stretch too much either, which was handy.

One of the Goldfingers I've recently taken cuts from was very different from mine, favouring a columnar structure with much tighter internodes and smaller leaves - hopefully this should reproduce OK indoors.

It's a possibility - I've got two small vials left of the original two Flo males, and a small amount of the 'MoFlo' F2 male I selected - which may actually be better, as it had more traits that I was after - particularly resin on all the flower parts:

But there's probably only enough for one more run, but that should still be good, assuming it's kept OK (fingers crossed).

awesome Elevator Man... saving pollen and everything... i salute you

Have you shared your technique for storing pollen anywhere by chance? I am flowering a couple of JLP's SD IBL x OG Kush Bx1 and would like to use the pollen on this crop (incross) and the next (outcross)... I am thinking of collecting the pollen with about 75% plain white flour and storing this mixture in pieces of straw that have been burn sealed at the bottom and then burn sealed at the top after depositing the pollen/flour mixture, and then I was gonna store this in the freezer... I hope this isn't too off-topic to discuss here in your thread... cheers

Muddy - I'm a little wary of cutting it with flour now, as I had almost complete disaster with my last run - barely any seeds took, and I was left completely puzzled, as the previously-frozen pollen had been fine. One day my film-canister of fresh MoFlo pollen began getting a little caked, despite being totally dry, and I began to wonder just how dry this stuff needs to be kept!

So I split it into smaller quantities before placing it in airtight medical vials, with silica gel beads loose in there as well, along with more silical gel in an outer bag, and then more in the tupperware box! I haven't had chance to try it yet, so still don't know for sure whether it will still work - I haven't frozen the MoFlo pollen at all yet, just kept it permanently in the fridge. I got plenty of seeds from the two Goldfingers, so it's not a complete disaster if it's screwed!

Kathmandu - thanks - they are spectacular eh? Or rather, were...I finished them both last week...sob...:( :(

Thanks for the kind comments - I barely know what I'm doing, to be honest, but learning fast! I'm halfway through building a new (but much smaller) grow cabinet, so hopefully I'll be up and running again shortly. Actually, I tell a lie, a handyman friend built most of it, as long as I sawed the wood and kept feeding him tea and spliffs...:)

Whether I can breed in this place though is another matter - it's fine for a small personal grow. but as for crossing - may be too small. I'm just praying I can convince someone else to let me use some of their space...:)

As for the Goldfinger, I have a few clones of the weird, bushy small-leaf pheno rooting, and I think this one may be OK indoors. It's just going into flower in my friend's garden, so I'll get an idea of stretch, etc. very soon. And also flower time - if it's twelve weeks like mine, he may struggle to finish it outdoors in the UK. But I think it's more Flo-dominant, and may come in at ten - we shall see. I'll obviously update with photos too...:)

Here are a few photos of the Goldfingers.

First up is the mg2xf2 cross. This one is at about 8 weeks of flowering. I have pollenated some of the smaller buds at the bottom of this with pollen from JLP's sdxog cross...This plant should be done mid October.

Here is a shot of the other Goldfinger mg1Xf1. This one also has some smaller buds pollenated with the JLP cross. I expect this Goldfinger and the rest to finish in mid November.

ThaiPhoon - wow - fantastic work. I'm so pleased! Have you got any pics of the whole plant? I've got some clones rooting of the super-bushy pheno my friend has in his garden, and they should look a little like this one, I think.

But this is inspiring - really awesome buds!

Some Full Plant Shots

Some Full Plant Shots

Here are a few quick snapshots of each of the 4 Goldfingers I have.

This is the same plant as the in the first pic of my last post mg2Xf2

This is her sister

Here is mg1Xf1b
The other plant, in the background is one of the mg2Xf2.

Here is mg1Xf1a

By the size of things I would say the mg2Xf2 would be fine indoors - nice and short. I'd bet the mg1Xf1 could be scrogged or trained quite easily as well though..

What do you think EM?

What do I think? I think you're doing a fantastic job mate - well done! Those buds are terrific!

The first pheno looks a little like my #1 pheno - espcially on the leaf-shape. I'm really impressed with the extent of the Flo influence on all of them - almost exactly the profiles I was hoping for - much less leaf and more bud. The mg1Xf1b looks quite similar the pheno I'm rooting clones from - more leaves, but very small ones.

Gosh, I'm feeling proud - and you should too! Anyone else who got some started them yet? :chin:

I'm sure you can do them justice! I'm tempted to try and squeeze one of my clones in there now - I was going to give them all away, but now maybe not...:)

EMan...I'm still watchin and enjoying your grow. Your Malawi Gold pheno doesn't seem to have the real distinctive downward curl on the very tips of the leaves but only from what I could see in your image? They all look great. Dr. Duck.
