BeAn - thanks! But ThaiPhoon's plants are indeed outdoors in Thailand...:)

Lol, even better...for a minute i thaught they were in the UK, like: Why dont my girls look like that... :muahaha:

What a great place to test your genetics EM, DJ said that the photoperiod affects phenotype in terms of Indica/Sativa expression in hybrids...seems your Goldfinger is an exception, which isnt they way i'd of thaught it to go...(considering Flo has a lot of Sat. in it..:chin:)

Great stuff, massive respect from this fellow grower..:respect:

No problem - thanks for the kind words. It's great to see an experiment to pay off, that's for sure!

But the biggest thanks go to ThaiPhoon for taking on an unknown, untested cross on trust, and devoting a summer grow to it - that I really appreciate, especially when there's so many possible strains to choose from. Amazing really...:)

Hey EM,

It was great of you to trust me to grow them out for you here! I haven't got a lot of money to buy great genetics, so the Goldfingers are really a great gift!

Well I could see you could grow, and you can't beat real tropical sunshine for bringing out the best in a good strain! One or two of my friends are seriously impressed with this little project, I can tell you...:)

I couldn't resist any longer....

I couldn't resist any longer....

Ok, I am weak...I cut the top off of that early mg2Xf2 pheno. It doesn't take long to dry here! So this one was taken at about week 11. I also sampled a bit once it was just dry. Of course the flavours will mature in the cure...but it even now it is very smooth and light! I really enjoy the taste and the high is very very nice...great for watching a movie!

I'm looking forward to seeing how that taste improves!

My friend just brought me a great clone of the male he had in his garden - the purple Flo-dominant pheno. I did have a clone myself, but it was a little battered - this one is great, and very healthy, so I might give the other one away.

This one:

Another friend (bless his heart), who doesn't grow at all, has agreed to host this male to collect some pollen. If there's no other plants there, it can't do any damage, unlike here! So assuming all goes well, I should be able to collect some pollen from it in about a month for future inbreeding.

I know it's still a little haphazard, and obviously still fairly random, but the male is perfect in structure, color and leaf shape, so that's good enough for me - for now! Fingers crossed on that one...:chin:

Hiya E-M,

Great to hear you have some help with you breeding project, sounds like you really have things organised. My Goldfinger clone is just about hanging in there, hope it survives.

Organised? Are you kidding? It's like a plate-spinning contest on the top deck of a cross-channel night ferry in January...:)

Seriously though, I'm pleased it's got a home - I know it's hardly 'serious' breeding, but given the limitations, and small selection pools, it's travelling in the right direction. And this male clone is big, and really healthy. I drenched it in neem last night, although it looked clean, and it's now under the lights to fatten up a little for its now home.

Hello E-Man,

Here are some more photo's of the different Goldfinger plants that are finishing up here. They look a little rough. I had a tough time with spider mites, and now the excessive rain! Those damn typhoons!(Happy to be away from the coast)

Looking great and very traditional shaped buds too! I'm so pleased with the way these are turning out.

I'll try and get a snap of my friend's female very soon, but in the meantime, here's the Goldfinger male clone that I just dropped off at another friend's for flowering - more purple Flo-dominant than the female I have:

Here are a few more bud shots. They are still packing it on. I think I may have shocked them when I sprayed for mites a few weeks ago.

I think that this plant will be finished at the middle of November...maybe the end of November..

Who's your friend? :)

But very nice indeed - looking much chunkier eh? What's this one smell like?

My friend says the bushy pheno is garden is flowering like crazy and looking really good - this is in the UK in late October, so if it does finish, or even gets close, I'll be overjoyed - a nine/ten week Goldfinger would be wonderful. Of course, it may smoke like shit, but with parents like that, is it likely? We'll find out soon enough...:)

Hi E-Man.

I have 3 Goldfingers left. I harvested that early flowering one. I also harvested some of the tops that had some bud rot - along with the seeds. All the plants are now producing new flowers and lots of white pistils. The weather knocked them around pretty good and l also neemed the crap out them and caused some damage. This goes to show how tough this cross is I guess!

The smells are GREAT!!! Each plant smells a little different, but still somewhat similar...The mg1Xf1's smell more skunky funk and the mg2xf2 has more floral/fruity earthy smells. I spend a good part of my free time smelling them! I wish I could bottle the smell for a perfume or something.

I really love how smooth and full of flavour the smoke is! The strongest flavour in the smoke is really earthy - sort of tastes the way really good soil smells - Then on top of that there are hints of tobacco and fruit. It's AWESOME. There is a very small difference between the two, but I can't say one is better than the other in this area.

Those smells/flavours sound right on the money - exactly what I was hoping for. AWESOME is the sort of description I like too...:)

ThaiPhoon there is actually a way to keep the smells but it means wasting a lot of bud because I think there are certain techniques of making essential oils from in your own home but they involve wasting the bud in hot water or other stuff which I don't recommend unless it's that good that you want to keep it :p but I doubt it.
But reading the smoke description really makes me want to get the strain, I'm like you Elevator Man, just love a good description!

Well it's hardly a strain yet - I wouldn't dare claim that. Maybe in three or four generations maybe. And there's barely any seeds left for that stage sadly. But all the pointers are good, and now I have a good male, I should be able to take it to the next level at least.

I went up to my friend's garden today to check out his plants - it's been very cold the last few days - very clear skies and a touch of frost. But the plants are doing fine.

But the Goldfinger - wow - it's six feet tall, and buds everywhere. It's much more of a columnar pheno than ThaiPhoon's - a little more like my two in bud structure, but less of the small bud leaves in-between, and smaller shade leaves too. But the resin smells amazing - a much more pronounced weird pineapple smell than either of mine (or the original Malawi mother to be honest) - very fruity and tropical.

But the best part is that it's keeping up with everything else in terms of flowering. There are a couple of Skunk#1s that are nine/ten-weekers, and it seems at the same stage. If it does finish by severe frosts, or get close, then that's the fastest pheno yet. If it'll flower outdoors in the UK at 53 degrees, then I'm overjoyed - assuming it smokes well of course. This also means it would be a great indoor pheno, and may be worth crossing to that Flo-dominant male after all...:chin:

I hope to have a borrowed digital camera by Monday, so I will get pics of this before harvest - despite all the hassles of moving, this cross still seems to be moving forwards, which is amazing...

Goldfinger pheno #3...

Goldfinger pheno #3...

Here's the third Goldfinger female pheno to leave Elevator Labs - or rather, to return; from my friend's garden, where it's been growing all summer. This is the pheno mentioned above, which may just prove to be an ideal candidate for an early-flowering F2. This is another of the MG1 X F1s - purple Flo male.

It features bright red stems rather than purple (much more vivid in real life), quite dark green leaves, with a distinct outward-pointing shape to the leaf-blades, which I've seen in some of my Flo F2 phenos. They are also quite skinny in blade-width compared to the two phenos I grew out before. In many respects this one is closer to the original Malawi mother, except it seems to flower much faster - at the moment it's around eight weeks, and looks to be ready to finish. If it's a ten-weeker, I'm celebrating!

Of course it still needs a smoke-test once harvested, but a quick rub the other day produced a distinct fruity pineapple smell, with an additional dark spice/vanilla that only Flo can produce. Potency is obviously the next test, but I don't expect the high to be narcotic in the least! So I'm going to veg out this clone as much as possible for more cloning and possible seed production with the Goldfinger male. I don't know if I can actually flower this properly, with everything else I have going on, but it will certainly survive in some form.

I love your writing, EM. You're truly an intellectual of the herb. It's a breath of fresh air when you've had your fill of all the morons who have somehow figured out how to use the internet...
