I am fortunate enough to have a vehicle*sarcasm* that gets about 10mph...ugh, however my scooter gets about 90mpg and i can ride it more than half the year. And parking is a breeze :) so i figure it all evens out.

Not only are oil execs getting rich beyond even their wildest dreams, we're giving them all the money we might otherwise invest in alternative energy.

These guys complain about ineffective government, then laugh about making out like bandits.

It's not just the oil guys making the money, politicians have to get their due too. Depending on the country and state you live in, half or more of the price of gas is from added taxes. They all want our money.

and this is why im finishing my offgrid hybrid home right now. so when the shit hits the fan i can put my aeroponic tables, leds and vegetables to full swing and say fuck the world... I plan on getting one of them chevy volts or nissan leafs but i want to wait until they are more advanced. either way i will be able to recharge them for free with my offgrid system. NO COST TO DRIVE EXCEPT MAINETENANCE.

large storage of diesel fuel. its the way to go if your relying on fuel it can be stored for a LONG time before degrading i was reading in some forums of diesel fuel lasting 20years and still working with no additives. given the right environment and correct additives you could easily keep the shit around 20+ years.

AND ITS NOT SUMMER YET!!!!!!!

at this rate, us kats in Cali will be paying $7-8 a gallon by summer......

That's not very likely unless an actual war between Israel and Iran breaks out. People were saying the same sorts of things last year but then when gas prices hit a national average of $4.00 per gallon people radically altered their consumption thereby lowering demand which increased supply and drove prices back down. Since then the national average has hovered between $3.00 to $3.50 per gallon in the US which seems to be the sweet spot for the oil companies because at that price most Americans still use thier gas guzzlers and don't alter their habits much.

As harsh as it would be in the short term it would probably be best for us if gas prices did go up to $7-8 per gallon because maybe then we'd stop dragging our asses on developing the infrastructure needed for cleaner technologies. The main thing holding electric cars and hydrogen fuel cell cars back is the lack of infrastructure supporting them (charging stations, hydrogen fuel cell stations). Hell we could even easily have cars running on natural gas all over the place but we don't because there isn't really a sufficient network of stations where one can fuel up with natural gas. Nor is any of the big money keen on building these things because there isn't enough guarenteed return on that investment unless they can charge more or less the same prices we face now for gas.

i always love it when gas prices go up,i see lots of dusty bikes on the road all of a sudden!
i was reading the abstract of a paper comparing the efficiency of a person on a bicycle vs driving a car, turns out its not many times more efficient in terms of fuel savings as the cyclist would have you believe in many cases as it takes quite a bit of energy to transport and cook all the food a cyclist requires...but that was only as a direct comparison of mechanical efficiency.

Gas prices will go up, that's just what happens if you run out of something everybody wants.

At the moment everybody works on efficiency of new cars. The most recent Mercedes S-Klasse is rated at a minimum of 5,5l/100km or 42mpg (US) that is one heavy beast but it is possible to reduce the consumption by up to 30%. The prices for engines, however are too high to compensate the more expensive gas prices, so until the prices of gas go up even more you US Guys won't have any benefit by buying those expensive engines.

For example I can buy a new for Mustang GT arround 30k€ over here, compared to an comparable german car the bigger consumption will cost me arround 10k€ for the first three years. The comparable german car costs at least 20k€ more than the Mustang. Saving fuel is not a good deal, because gas still is too cheap.

Gas over here in germany is just below 10$/g (US) (1,55€/l Diesel). Double that seems possible to me within the next 10 years. By then those top efficient engines will compensate the gas prices.

Hybrids are bullshit, batteries are way too expensive and there is hardly enough Lithium in the world. Plus a good Diesel engine will consume way less at better power figures.

I notice:

When stock market goes up....gas/diesel goes up.

Stock market goes down...gas/diesel goes down.

I guess we need another crash?

Actually, they are working on so called Diesotto engines which are meant to burn Otto fuel without igniting spark plugs when driven with partial load. When driven at full power they still use sparks.

The main idea is to copy the great benefits of diesel engines while driven at partial loads. Diesel engines suck at full power too. Modern Diesel engines will give you arround 100kW/1l with great torque! Best Diesel cars you can buy at this moment will hit 78mpg (US).

oil from canadian oil sands can not be the solution. They contaminate five times the water for the oil. This water is heavily poisonous, killing whole parts of the country!

after the news is on gas station attendants grab they're suction cup number holder and post the news price even though the gas in the ground-tanks was cheaper before the news came on. and there is no new tanker sitting there with more gas. ban together and beat this, fight back like the pilgrims and the colonies did.

its all our fault for buying it. if we all really put forth the effort to conserve the price would not be so high. these people that mark the prices are just making more profits for them. They know everyone will bitch about it and we still pay.. Theres been alternative fuels for over a decade...

I think it's interesting how many experts we have here. :D I don't really have time to delve into the politics or science surrounding this issue to form a solid opinion one way or the other but one thing I know about our Earth is that it's always surprising us. Like I said, my opinion isn't as informed as others around here but it seems kind of silly to think that humans can drain a planet of something created from rotting planet. Anyways, here is my solution:
