BG, hallucinogen & paranoidNovice: Thanks, I appriciate the compliments.
On day 37 I cut off a bunch of leaves from above the screen that were shading buds. The canopy looks a lot better now that the buds have been fully exposed to the light. I think I should have done this earlier somewhere between weeks 3 and 4 of flowering cycle. This mistake probably cost me some yield.
Day 45
The buds are getting fatter. They will get one more dose of nutes and then they go on a pure water + TopMax diet until the end.
Mother plants for the next batch are doing good. The C99 seems to grow very fast. I did some LST on her to make her bushy. Seems to be working very well. I could take a couple of cuttings from her already. This will be a good plant for the next run. The Chronic isn't growing that well. She has nice node spacing but she has grown only one branch. I topped her to get them branches going. I also transplanted the Chronic and C99 to 4 litre pots.
The 2 new mother plants are Silver Haze clones from the scrog plants.
The plants are on water + TM now. I'm hoping they'll get some color. I've had a SH plant go purple once last winter. Back then it was colder outside if I remember correctly so the night time temperatures in the grow room dropped more.
Outside temps have been between -5 and +5 celsius this year, mostly around 0 though. I don't have a indoor thermometer so I don't know the tempererature in the grow room. But in the morning when the lights come on it feels cold in there. Guess we have to wait and see what happens this time.
I've been thinking about improvements to this setup. I realized that some of the buds farthest in the back row are very nice and fat. Much fatter than in the front row. So there is good light penetration back there. Here's a good thing: Currently there is some empty room (about 25cm) in the back between the modules and the wall. That's just enough room to squeeze in a modified module.
What this means is that next run I'll be adding one more row of plants. That will be three modules with half vertical screens.
As you can see in the picture I have designed two options.
Option A would be better for rotating the plants. I could rotate the flat screens like this grow just have three extra plants. I don't plan to rotate the plants in the back row at all because there's always a risk of breaking branches when they get packed tight and buds are getting fat.
Option B would allow the tops in the front row to be elevated so they would get a little more light. The front row is in low light zone currently. Smallest buds can be found there. When the modules are setup this way I could only rotate the 6 flat screen under the best spot. Obviously there is no sense in moving the vertical screens in the middle. That means the three verticals in the front row could only be rotated among themselves.
Next grow I will also add some mylar to the walls and probably buy a new bulb for the HPS. The new grow area footprint will be 140cm x 105cm so the light will be kind of pushed to the limits.
I'd like to hear some opinions which option I should choose and why.
I just looked at the trichs with my microscope and they look like they are peaking soon. The harvest window for this clone is about 10 days. For the best result it should be cut between 55 and 65 days. Personally I like it best at 60 so there are only a few days left. They will get their last watering today.
i follow all the rest of comment...
AMAZING SCREEN OF DENSE AND HUGE FLAVOURED BUDS..
..i love scrog potentially...and as u have tell during the thread at farmer john ..the stretch ,with this tecnique ,IS A LOWER PROBLEM when u have form a solid base to the candles...
perfect set up-with one of mine favorites strain--BIG UP MAN!!
ps..usually when i tie down the branches like this i got some problem with the watering...but i've see tha u have take a good distance for this operation..do u leave out the pots every time u watering?
under the pots (for adjust the height of plants) take place only to NON-organic materials (don't take under the pot the magazines, but use plastics)...cause they can bring some baddest fungi and bacteria during the watering if it absorb it for a long time..
hope it's clear ...my english as bad as the baddest bacteria ehehehehe
Hey there Mr GreenJeans, FJ & filimagno! Thanks for the compliments.
fili: I used Biobizz BioGrow, BioBloom and TopMax at 2/3 dose every watering. The pots don't have drainage holes so no water comes out of them. Yes I know I should have holes to let the extra water run through but I thought it would be too much of a hassle to move all the plants to another room for watering. I've been watering them once every 4-7 days to let them dry between waterings. I use the lift-the-pot-method to see when they need more water.
Anyway the harvest is near. I'm also happy to say that some of the buds have got some nice purplish color on them. Outside temps have been -10 celsius lately so it did the trick. New pictures will come at harvest.
Here is some new goodies I picked up from my safe addy last weekend. I love Spice of Life!
I killed the Chronic and C99 mother plants and got a nice bunch of clones. Also took 5 cuts from SH but I let them stay alive for awhile to get some more cuts.
Hey there Salakavala, Im new to posting on this thread but I have been following it. Really nice. Just had to chime in and share/ask why dont you put drainage holes in your pots and then put the collector pans under them? Looks awsome! Peace.
I have a question
Did you root the clones first?
Or just cut them and place them in the soil?
This Scrog grow is the best I have seen.
Keep up the great work!
Tandare
Tandare: Yes, I root the clones in rockwool cubes first.
Here are pics from day 60 just before chopping them down.
Trimming the buds was terrible: lots of leaf and popcorn. Here comes the surprise: the yield was a big big dissapointment. Only 288g of dry buds. This was my worst harvest in years. I've never had under 0.5g/w with my 600 watter. I can easily get 350-400g per m2 from this same Silver Haze clone when grown bush style with little LST.
Now I'm wondering what the hell went wrong? The screen was full of buds and there were no major fuckups from my part. Plants stayed healthy and green until I stopped feeding them. I even checked the root balls and they were ok too.
Here are some possible reasons for low yield I've come up with:
1 Too much leaf above screen. The light didn't penetrate the canopy deep enough. Should have cut a lot more a lot earlier.
2 Old bulb in HPS (2 years old)
3 Bad strain for scrog
When you think about the amount of work I put in this grow and the yield I got, it's safe to say this experiment was a miserable failure. Anyway my previous harvest was fat so in the end this evens it out. Can't win every time .
Thanks for the support everyone and have a nice new year! I'll be getting totally wasted tonight for sure and I bet I'm not the only one!
