i had these those same bugs last summer. Spectracide from home depot killed them all in one shot. I did one tablespoon per gal and just watered till runoff. They didnt come back after that. Got the bugs from fox farm ocean forest soil. Checked fresh bag and it was crawling with them.

fox farm has got to do something about this.
lots of folks finding bugs in fresh bags

I don't run fox farm, but I suspect the RA's may be coming in on the soil I use as well. Basically as the company expanded their soil brand, they outsourced the mixing and storage of bags from inside their warehouse to another company that keeps everything outside. I've started to bake the soil in my oven in turkey bags at 170* for a few hours to burn them out, just as a preventative. I will soon be scrapping everything and switching to hydro tho.

If you think RAs are bad, wait until you experience Broad mites. They are a thousand times worse.

broad mites can be a bitch to identify since the bugs are microscopic. if you don't know what it is you're looking for, you're dead in the water. they aren't tough to eradicate at all though. once yo know you've got em, couple doses of avid and/or forbid a week apart and you're good. they don't jump or ride air currents from plant to plant, so they don't spread terribly easily either.

exactly the same. except for the price.

The first time I saw root aphids, was in a container of Happy Frog Potting Soil by Fox Farm. granger

sheeeeit.
i actually opened a bag of hydroton about a year ago and it had fucking aphids in it. blew my mind.

Avant,
Yeah, I've never been in a warehouse, feed store, grow store, or anywhere that has bags that doesn't have spillage, torn bags, etc. Pests can spread around from one to the other. -granger

Im pretty sure I killed a bunch of plants with orthene. I don't remember how much I used but they were fried. I'll have to try the tsp/gal on a few plants laying just for future reference.

I battled root aphids for a year before killing all my plants and starting over from seed. I have kept my genetics quarantined at another spot where my bf and I are treating and "cloning" them out of the genetics.

Some things that we have been using at a friends grow (the source lol) that seem to be working "for control" in the flowering room are diping rooted clones in kontos when we plant into containers. Then merit75 on the second watering aftering planting (around two weeks veg right before we flip to flower). Then teas to try to rebuild the soil life.

Last run at that grow we went with kontos and merit later in veg when we noticed the met52 wasnt working but the damage had been done at that point I think. We ended up with only 1lb/light but the quality was pretty decent.

All mom plants at that grow are being hit every two weeks with a rotatation of kontos and merit. Gonna have to try the orthene at tsp/gal like eclipse420 suggested so we can add it to the rotation.

I'll try to get pictures up of the room we've been using the kontos dip with.

I'm thinking we are starting to get a grasp on a good preventative control for the circumstances. Thanks to all those who shared there experiences. :thank you:
I've been running the Kontos and merit 75 combo also, glad to hear it's working for others.
My total veg time is 6 weeks though, so they get a nice length of treatment, haven't seen an aphid in flower for a while now.

Have to correct you here. They are NOT easy to get rid of, as they keep coming back. Also, they do "jump" from plant to plant, as they get airborne and ride air currents due to their microscopic size, and they fly in on the legs of whiteflies, one of the main vectors of broad/cyclamen mites. There are pictures of broad mites on the legs of whiteflies in the broad mite thread.

"Phorsey" is the term used to describe when these little f*ckers attach themselves to another creature to find a new host. Mites are phoretic...

Unfortunately I have to bump this thread
I have RA all stages. In bloom veg and pre veg
Last night I hit veg and pre veg with Merit 75
Growing in HP promix bx
Bloom is week 5 of 10
Everything is ok on the small side of production and a few yellowing since week 3. Bit of purple stems and leaf veins same with veg

I have 2 questions
After merit. I have hg roots excelurator but what else do I need to apply to be safe

What can I do in bloom

In bloom, you can use Botaniguard.
Can't use Merit in bloom. These will come back if the source of your "infection" is local, ie, coming from your yard outside, or if you are using soil, particularly Foxfarms.

So I was thinking of applying some roots excelurator and cannazyme next feeding for veg is there a good all purpose virus fungicide etc I should use to be ahead of the game for the RA damage

Don't know if there is such a thing, but I've gotten into ACT (aerated compost tea) mycorrhizae, and Streptomyces lydicus, aka Actinovate to ward off the nasties. Won't help w RA tho...

In bloom, use Cedarcide PCO Choice [google it] at 4 TBL/gal. Do a 20 minute immersion, let drain, then flush well with pH'd water. Use Roots Excelurator. Feed and use Botanigard or Mycotrol [organic version]. This is best for all stages. Good luck. -granger
NOTE: I now [4-10-14] use 2-3 tsp/gal. Higher concentrations cause root damage. Best to try on expendable plants, flush, wait 7-10 days to see if they pass. -granger
And yes, EJ GoGnats is Cedar oil. Cedarcide PCO Choice is 3 times as strong and uses a different emulsifier. GoGnats will be cheaper to *try* than Cedarcide.
