I will use this thread to rant, and it IS on topic, I believe.
Owning a dog is a major responsibility, very much like bringing a child into the world and a decision worthy of deep consideration. Many people have dogs when they are not prepared to actually take care of it. It is bad when the owner of a small dog does this and exponentially worse with potentially dangerous dogs. If an untrained dog is allowed to act on impulse it could be life ending for the dog, and just not fair.
Dogs love and need companionship. A dog left along all day long will be bored and lonely and probably get into some trouble. Ideally a dog should have company, and the training never stops. I cannot bring my dogs to work with me every day so I have a dog sitter. My dog sitter is someone that I trust very much. She is someone that will take care of the dogs per my instruction. Although my dog sitter is only 17 years old, she is very dedicated, unlike most people in her age group. At any rate, I know my dogs are not chewing up furniture when I am away and are constantly being trained. I was actually able to go to Hawaii last week and pretty much nothing bad happened. (The puppy chewed up an antique step ladder made of oak, not a huge loss). This girl has trained my dogs for things I haven't had time for and it is well worth what I give her. She is the one that taught the puppy to sit and behave for a treat, and to not snap the hand that feeds it.
The point is, a person should not have a dog unless they are prepared to do everything for the dog in regard to training and medical. My big boy got Parvo before getting all of his shots and almost died. It cost $2000. I would not want to deprive the poor from having a dog, but it is worth thinking about. For many of us our dogs are family. I would jump into a raging river to save my dog and I would kill someone that tried to hurt him. People that just get a dog to tie to a tree and forget about are scum to me. Dogs are the most loyal creatures on earth.
If you are not prepared for a dog there are opportunities until you are. My friend Roberto wants one of my dogs next round of pups. In the mean time he always ask if he can walk him. I do not let many walk my dog, but I trust Roberto. How he behaves with my pup will determine if he gets one of my dogs offspring.

I recently bought a shock collar for my little pitbull.
before you cuss me let me say this, I tried the collar on myself several times before putting it on Scooby. I would NEVER hurt my dog purposefully, I love her/them too much and it is counter-productive to them learning their lessons.
Alice my old springer spaniel is allowed to run free, she rarely wanders and aside from my own acreage we have 2-3 favorite spots where privacy is assured, she's safe.
Scooby is the untrusted runner, she's fine if she spots other dogs but if she sees a squirrel or bunny she's off to the races and NO amount of my screaming can stop her or call her back. She loves the shit outta meeting new people and yeah she jumps up to greet and lick, she loves giving kisses.
Anyway for her own protection (bunnies & squirrels coming out soon) she now wears the collar full time outside. It has 2 modes, shock or vibrate; I gave her a very very light shock once & she frikkin' HATED it, she responds to the vibrate mode instantly now as it's a reminder of the zap she didn't like. It allows the best control for an unleashed dog.
btw the collar I bought has shock levels from 0-127, I couldn't hang onto it @ 70 or 60 but could hold it in my closed hand getting zapped @ 50, and it literally tickled me @ 25, I set it to 25 for Scooby's training period. I used the zap/shock feature once and only once for a second and good god almighty did she ever get the message.
I now have a dog that obeys my voice command instantly while outside.
It was a $250 investment that will save me heartache & potential veterinary bills, I live right on a state highway w/speeding cars and we also have a very healthy population of porcupines here, dogs actually kill themselves attacking those fuckers.

I know a couple who have a pretty large house, they are good people but dont have a clue about dogs. They have never owned a dog but told me last week they are planning to get a Doberman. I said politely do you know that a Doberman is not a beginner's dog, that it needs about 3 walks long ones a day and cant be left in the garden at home (they both work). They are very intelligent but need a lot of training. The wife thought i was a tad rude but i know its a disaster waiting to happen. I probably wouldnt get a Doberman and ive owned and trained a German Shepherd, a Boxer, a Border Collie and a Bernese Mountain Dog. some breeds are not suitable for general ownership. I would include Pit Bulls (always attract unsuitable owners), Rottweilers, Akitas, etc . Dont get me wrong im not demonising these breeds just feel they need good owners....

I have owned PB, Dobi, GerShep, and moved on to Presa Canario. I love a big working dog. However, sometimes those breeds are born with a problem. I owned a Presa Canario and she was 135lbs. She would wake up in the middle of the night and attack her mate, who was larger than she was. I think it was because he was snoring. She would not stop with an authority bite, she would rip and tear for reason without provocation. I`ve never seen anything like it... I would try to control her and lay her down, she didn`t care to listen to anything. All of my dogs I have owned and cared for would stop mid-step while running, if i commanded. She was the most vicious dog I have ever seen, animal control said they could not find a home for her. She was possibly a clinically psychotic dog.
I play guitar, don`t get hurt over your dog getting killed. Also, I`m not willing to get smacked in the face by you as well. Careful, some people are god-like fast and accurate under pressure.
clearspot, i agree. i get alot of people asking why i won't breed my Akitas. these are very breed worthy dogs. they're a great example of the breed. i tell them because they average 9 per litter, and i cannot think of 8 people/families i know, that can be responsible enough to be a 'forever' home to one of my dogs. 1/2 of all Akitas born in the USA die in kennels and shelters. not because they're bad dogs, its because of bad breeding/owners. as pups, Akitas are about the cutest things you'll ever see.

When I was a kid and had a paper route, long before pepper spray was available, we used to put ammonia in squirt guns to carry. One shot to the snout not only stops the dog without seriously hurting him, it made that dog think twice next time he wanted to chase a kid on a bike, like moi.

Keep your dogs on a leash (and under control)...and there is no issue...at least none you are liable for...or your dog is liable for. I don't care if it's a poodle...akita...pit bull...mutt...whatever...or how well trained you think it is. Pretty fucking cut and dry...very simple

Yup..look at how much trouble that person was having controlling that beast. I see that coming at me out on a trail..in the woods..I'm not listening to a screaming owner...telling me how friendly it is.
Ever notice when an owner has panic in their voice...as their big ass dog is charging you? Talk about inciting disaster. It's happened to me many times..but in most cases...if you show no fear..stand your ground..they'll back down. Important to be ready when they don't though.
definitely not fun...certainly out of line..and unappreciated.

We own a siberian husky nice dog looks friendly but got a weird side we keep him chained up or in a kennel & on a leash wish we could let him run but I don't know how long he would be gone we take very good care of him, he has a house with straw, 5 gallon pail of fresh water always has food, take him for walks etc, & twenty feet of chain , metal roof & tarp over his dog house!

Man seriously I don't know how cool everyone is here but cops work for us, not all of them are bad. When a dogbite happens calling the cops is the responsible thing to do. My girlfriends mother was bitten by a rotweiler while walking her poodle and she has severe nerve damage for life, she recieved 130 stitches. She was paid 6 figures by the insurance company. I call the cops on ignorant assholes everytime I get a chance. If you are sweerving and perving down the road on a saturday night and are behind the wheel and shouldn't you are damn straight I am calling the po-po before you kill yourself and someone else. You can be a grower and still be a responsible adult you know.
