if im not mistaken, its the enzyme that wake up the embryo and start the whole process of growth, once water enters the shell.
Over the long storage time the shell has gotten really hard and this is where scuffing and soaking in a glass of water comes in handy..
Water has to enter the shell so the enzymes can begin to activate and feed the embryo. Possibly due to the long time, enzyme and food storages are hurt, so boosting with a enzyme supplement, using kelp (auxins and other growth hormones) and higher heat, you will speed up germination.
I propose you try this on a few you are not too fond of...
