I've composted Spanish moss a bunch. It doesn't compost like I thought it would. I thought it would melt or something but, it turns into a black ball of stringy hair looking stuff. My worms won't eat it like that.

Snake grass and duck weed are my two new favorites to compost. snake grass turns into this beautiful rich looking, almost the same color as Sphagnum peat moss, compost. It's a recent thing so I can't speak to it's effectiveness but, I've read where the duck weed is supposed to be rich in micro-nutrients and I only assume the snake grass is as well.

Yeah coba ive got mounds of the stringy black moss. I use it on veggie garden as a mulch. We should press it into bricks like rockwool and sell it to hydro growers lol. Thanks for the info on snake grass and duck weed. Gonna have to start some more piles and do some more testing. Has anyone ever tried composting the invasive armoured or walking catfish? Or the plecos? I could catch probably unlimited amounts and i doubt fwc would care hell maybe i could get paid for invasive removal while making a superb compost from the waste.

Windy - isn't 40 days a bit early to start turning purple. I know its been damn cold here lately - did it get crazy cold where you are growing them?

I lost the tops on some of my cucumbers and the tops of my tomato plants a few days ago (and I even had blankets over everything and a heater going - can't imagine the damage I'd have had without those - probably killed em off entirely).

Hey Coba, duck weed is great stuff for compost, god help you if you get it in your pond but definitely will compost just fine. Not sure what snake grass is exactly, got any pictures?

Left long enough any fish will decompose/compost just fine, used to use mullet when we got more than we wanted to smoke.

I don't have a homemade photo, If I remember I'll take one this weekend... online I noticed that people are calling duckweed - azolla and snakegrass - coontail.

look at all that beautiful compost fodder... this is how I be getting down harvesting that stuff... I have a barge I built out of four plastic 55 Gallon drums, two pieces of 3/4 inch ply wood, and 2x4's for a frame. I get out in the middle of the pond with a rake and pitch fork and hunch. it's a PITA. keeps the pond clean.

you can see I had a ph problem early on. I hate them cheap ones I got to buy a nice one. I have a nice ppm meter Hanna ,and never had a problem. This cheap crap I bought broke both of them now I'm using the drops to test my ph until I go buy one .

I wondered what the snakegrass was too. Google turned up horsetail and that stuff sounds interesting too. Silica crystals and stuff. But azolla is what you where talking about and i gotta build me one of those platforms to harvest this shit its everywhere. Parts of the st johns are clogged with it and every pond around here is full of it or duckweed or both. Hmm make compost of azolla duckweed and invasive fish. Ive got a big new project to start now.
