guys, I have to run a 5k btu window unit and a 1k hps on one breaker, what amp breaker should I be using? thank you kindly for any help

Q is, what is your AC rated for in amps?
what size wire is on the breaker now?
those AC's uaually have a big draw when they start up.
the breaker and wire need to be rated for use together
if your going w/30A breaker you need to use a #10 wire.
20A breaker---> #12 wire

what size wire do currently have?.
it should be a #12, if so your good with a 20A breaker and can run a steady 16 amp load.
a 1000w mag ballast draws 9A
I doubt your gonna get the 5000btu AC to go unless it draws 7A or less
AND
those AC's usually have a big draw when they start up more than their rating.
BUT
here's an idea, most 1KW ballasts can run on 220V
running on 220v you knock the amperage draw down in 1/2 to 4.5ish or so
plus your equipment will run a bit more efficient.

not a super old house, yet not a super brand new one...but in one room with a 1000 in one socket,a 400 in another, then a window unit in another socket, then a fan in another socket(obviously theres a socket on each wall in room)..then i have fan plugged into same socket as 1000, havent had any toubles yet(knock on wood)..but now you guys got me wondering and thinking..LOL

AL,atta boy on 10 year marraige...im coming up on like 7-8with my lady as well..gotta love a super cool chick thats for damn sure..
Either some of those outlets are not in series or you are one lucky mofo. If you will, are all 4 of those outlets on one breaker? One 20 amp breaker?

20 amp breaker, #12 wire there. the ac will run 24/7 as it will be the fan for the grow and dehuey at night I hope, not sealing, exhausting air through the ceiling but not aircooling the hood, and nowhere to put an intake for fresh air so I need my negative pressure sucking in where I can get it. room is 4'x4.5'. still trying to figure how to have & hide veg, moms, clones and reservoirs but has to be hidden, this is a 1/2 bath that im gutting and hiding by walling it off to a walk in closet. heres the ac, I cant tell from reading it, anybody speak air conditioner? and thank you all

Not much going on this evening.........time to crack a few beers

Day 17 of my LED grow.....a little of everything in there. Think I am going to add another 50W bank to finish flowering them out. Stopped training them under the net yesterday....

Hugh, That unit uses about 5 -7 amps. That's a guess, of course, because it only lists wattage (455). So, on a 20 amp breaker you would be right at the limit with the AC and 1000 watter plugged into the same circuit. Doable. BUT, as Gnome mentioned, the initial amp draw on start might occasionally trip your breaker...

sweet!

al, I plan setting the temp and leaving it running, hopefully the only startup draw will be for the hps. I hope. should have it mostly done through the weekend

halfway there, ac is sealed inside, installed and window covered with rmax, room's gutted, wall framed, ballast hung and hole cut for exhaust. all that's left is hang the fan & filter, reflector, clean the nasty wax off the toilet drain, toss my ladies in all and then hide it behind drywall. I'm hoping I can drill through the wall for drip lines and have the reservoirs in an adjacent room, may have to go back to heavy duty totes so it at least appears to be stored stuff, seems like a couple 20 gal brute cans might look a little odd. after that I have to try to figure where veg, moms and cloning will go down, not looking good on that but i'll figure out something. I've been taking pics along the way, I'll post them once I'm done, might start a thread for my shithouse garden lol

gsizzle,

id think it would keep the RH too high for this climate but geothermal cooling tubes buried several ft would cool the air w/o adding to moisture.

peace

hell I have a couple tents but nowhere to hide them. everythings on a test run now, so far its starting the bulb with ac already running and not tripping. temps are at 76 with nothing in there and the hood no longer aircooled, WAAAYYYYY brighter. hiding it is not going to be possible, too loud so I guess i'll just slap a lock on the door and may have a little veg room. on a side note I might have free c02 lol, the fan is pulling air from the open toilet drain and it fucking smells unpleasant.
