let me guess you didnt have a cover?

i just skim it off and then use the FPE.

actually i did it in mason jars with loose lids to let gases escape but limit entrance. there is a portion of material sticking up out of the water. i assumed that was the problem. i just didn't want to add too much water to start.
good to know it's not scrap. :)

your going to end up diluting it, you cant add too much water. the more water vs less material means you just have to dilute less. less water with more material means you will have a stronger extract and will end up needing to dilute more.

stankie, not a problem. i prefer the FPE to the syrup though.

thx jk. so what's the min i should dilute it? like a teaspoon to a pint? a mL per L?
and from now on should i just put as much water as to keep everything covered? what about if it floats?
I'm really excited about trying this out.

Love this thread. :) I have been using some dandelion and comfrey FPE's so far. I also have a pound or two of dried comfrey. Lots of lambs quarters with nice variegated seeds and leaves to use as well.

big ballin i've got some lambs ears in pots right now. I am going to divide it up in the spring and have indoor and outdoor. Thanks for the info on their use.

How about a pepper FPE? I've got lots of habaneros to work with. I figure a well aged FPE should allow the capsaicin content to be converted into something else that won't be as reactive via fermentation.

I've also got some banana FPE that has been sitting for 9 months now. Distinct layers. A very clear top one, which i think is alcohol plus other goodies. Then the bottom cloudy layer. I thought that could be used as a slurry and just poured on top of the soil, but i would love to hear some others input on this. If memory serves then i can dilute the clear layer 1 to 50 or even higher in water and think and apply. yes?

you can do hot pepper FPE. best to pulse in a thrift store blender with some water before letting it sit.

fermented stinging nettle is an immune tonic/booster for plants and ime works well when applied a couple times at the end of veg/beginning of flower..

so I went back and there seems to be a bit of conflict on the issue of smell as an indicator of viability.
I have a brew that stinks like the rancid feces of a fast food junkie. It's radish seedlings from thinning. Can I still use that or any others that smell god awful?

supposed to smell, dilute and apply. this is an ANAEROBIC process NOT AEROBIC!!!!!!

I did whole peppers, pablano's, cayenne and jalapeno's with some homegrown garlic.

Look up making homemade Sriracha, "cock sauce"

Next spring I am going to add my horseradish growing out on the back deck.

Also made LAB starter with this and have some going that was sealed on 10/10/2011, to ten parts whole milk and it looks beautiful still after 2 months.

I got some mothers and the clippings of that can be fermeted?
Would this be any good to use when only growing ?
or even when in bloom?

1.Half the things you listed in your "vegan" nutes are not vegan. 2. Do you really believe plants are, or would ever be, vegan?

i hope this is the right place for this question.......

i ordered and planted bocking 14 last summer. i put it two different parts of the garden and one is doing MUCH better than the other. it seems like even comfrey does not like the afternoon colorado sun pounding on it so i was thinking about trying to move them. i am pretty sure if i miss parts of the root system i would be able to "drought them out" and not have it go viral in the garden. or am i underestimating comfrey and the best thing to do is leave it alone and see what happens?

the babies in my closet have been getting a nice rotation of dandelion, nettle, and yarrow FPEs. they are loving it :D

i finally got myself some comfrey! but it's not bocking 14. i'm gonna have to leave it in a container i guess :/

the bocking 14 cultivar is desirable because it does not send out runners (rhizomes) and thus will not take over your garden.

correction....

the bocking 14 has sterile seed. and is only propagated by root division.

i wanted to move them when they were dormant so they would get a good jump on spring .......... they did get a jump, and they are not dormant anymore, so i will see what they do this year right where they are.

i do have another question about another plant on the FPE list though .....

i got some stinging nettle seeds ...... any good tricks for starting them? can i start them in pots and move them outside, or is that not an option with nettles?

i just did a little research and it turns out i did not understand the difference between rhizomes and stolons.

so rhizomes are like ginger, asparagus, bamboo and irises, and stolons are like strawberries.

from wiki:

"A stolon is similar to a rhizome, but, unlike a rhizome, which is the main stem of the plant, a stolon sprouts from an existing stem, has long internodes, and generates new shoots at the end, such as in the strawberry plant. In general, rhizomes have short internodes; they send out roots from the bottom of the nodes and new upward-growing shoots from the top of the nodes. It is a method of reproduction for plants."

Anyone have a list of plants to avoid? I would assume hemlock would be bad for example..

I have tons of nettle, and dandelion so I have been making them. I also made ones with kelp meal, red grapes, and one with pineapple. I took some lacto B and added that to bat guano with molasses to liquify it. Makes on hell of a strong brew!

tried making liquid ferts from dry powder... 0-8-1 guano, azomite liquid, stonemeal liquid, ewc,etc...

added jarrow enzyme and probiotic capsules...

plants seem to like em but, i never strained em and they all started to smell funky as hell...

except the greensand/ kelp extract....

this one smells super sweet, no bad smells at all after 3-4 weeks, and there are tons of white floaters exactly like you find in em-1 or when I sampled "the other tomato(bacteria product)"

not sure exactly what I did, but i guess I have created a balance that the probiotics like and can flourish and multiply in...??

I seem to have created an organic k booster full of living microbes

any ideas?

I hope you'll keep us updated. I made a kind of Steve Solomon COF bokashi thing last year, but it reeked so bad I was afraid to use it!
