Feminized Seeds vs. Regular Seeds

Is there any reason to go with regular seeds over feminized seeds? Is anything lost in the process of making feminized seeds that someone would be missing out on if they grew fems instead of regs?
the problem with fem seeds is you get hermies and males mixed in depending on the quality and the process they were made

I guess I should have elaborated...

Most things in life are male and female, cannabis is the same way. Call me a purist but any plant that goes intersex should be killed and never should be mated to make seeds, especially for sale to people. S1s and fem seeds are fuckin up the gene pool. It doesn't take any skill to force a plant to throw male flowers or have one pollinate itself...any grower can do that...true breeding uses males and not just any males, the best of the best. Those are harder to find than holy grail females...and if you think I have fucked up gene pool check my albums...

well said, fems are great if u need a quick fix but selfing one self is diluting the genes.the fems will be homogenous to the plant the breeder selected,so not many variables, and also not the bit of man power all females human and plants have.

I have tried out some fems..., had mixed results. I had some excellent phenos of slh(ghsc), trainwreck(ghsc) and vanilla kush while some other strains turned out to be nightmarish herms... white widow(ghsc), violator kush, white rhino (ghsc). Those fuckers messed up a perfect crop of sinsa...

All in all I will not buy fems again, I'm just going to stick with the reg beans as I have had nothing but solid results from them for the past 20 years.

i think regular seeds are better , but before fem seeds there used to be hermies and now with the fem seeds there are also hermies .

the main seed banks have less control of their genetics than micro breeders . most big banks get the spanish to do the feminising .

some seed makers in spain will sell whole sale to other comps in amsterdam . the same seeds could end up going to more than one seed comp sold as what ever they choose ,

but if a breeder does the work him self and actually tests the strains and having the cross not herm being the only criteria they look for.

then i cant see why fems cant be a good thing for the grower .

fems will be old news in the next 5 years i think auto fems will take over , they are getting better every year with all sorts of types popping up tall ones , short ones son on . then once you can get all most exact copies of say og kush or cheese or any other main stream dankness most would grow them .

if it depends on the quality of the making process then thats not a fair comment really , i've grown plenty of regular seeds that have shown hermi traits or just been shitty seeds !

I think that is the whole point with female seeds that are sold for the mass market.. you want them to be homogeneous... If I were to do a ca$h crop, I want uniform buds.. as do the customers... so yes I like them to use a female that breeds true for certain traits... I thought that was the point of them from a product point of view.

Why would you cash crop from seed, much less fem seed, when you could clone from a known outstanding individual.

Because not everybody can access an outstanding individual all the time, it also takes time and money to seek out an outstanding individual, and then you could get seeds that have come from an outstanding individual.. time is money to some.. I also know some that prefer to grow from seed than keep mothers... I'm not here saying its one or the other, I just don't think people should sprout things like its damaging for the gene pool, when theres many things that are bad for the gene pool apart from the voodoo that is "fem" seeds.

I just wish that these kind of threads were able to run without one or two of the wheels falling off the bus.

I've personally messed with Female Seeds since the OG day's and my message has always been the same:

Female Seeds gets new players in the game and keeps them playing.

Let's face facts folks. Our hobby is not for everyone especially in our current instant gratification society. If Joe The Newby Grower spends his hard earned cash to set up his grow and uses straight beans and pops 10 beans we all know that they will not be all female and if he grows them ALL out (like a rookie does) he's gonna end up (after 3 to 4 months) with seeds say fug this mess and go back to buying on the corner.

If this same person uses Female Seeds for a run or two to get it down he or she will have bud to smoke EVERYTIME.

How is it so hard to understand this and try to make something good out of the bad.?

Now understand I'm talking about the one who doesn't come here for advice but simply takes the leap to grow their own without outside assistance.

My gallery is full of decades of shots of Female Beans that have been around long b4 female seeds were cool. Like anything else it depends on where you get them and the reputation of the breeder.

All I'm saying is they do have a purpose. Give me 20 people who want to grow and give 10 Normal Beans and 10 Female Seeds Beans and turn them loose. Come back a year or so later and I bet my last dollar the amount of one's still growing and trying different strains who started with Female Seeds will DOUBLE the one's who started out the hard way.

This is when those that have learned how to grow move on to the next level of their trip down growing road.

I say this all from experience folks. I've been on these boards since the invention of the internet so I guess you could say I have seen more than those 20 people I have mentioned. It takes a passion for this to work and that passion comes from growing buds not seeds for the one's who are first starting out.

To be able to keep them hooked you gotta make it simple KISS if you will and to be able to do that and still give you some damn fine bud is simply extra gravy for your bisquits.

takeing a purely pragmatic view on it !

regular seeds are just better value !!

almost all seed companyS now sell 10 reg seeds for the same price as 5 femed seeds !!

witch means you get double the seeds for reg as you do buying femed seeds !

i love a gamble and up to now iv never lost !! been a long time since iv had less than 5 females out of a pack usaly i get 7 to 9 !!

plus to me its a proven fact from my own experiments that there is hardly no veriation in femed seeds ! there just more like each other than reg ,

with reg females you get beautifull veriation in phenos alot better for findin something special !

but suppose that could be a negitive for a newbee grower who wants uniformity !!

i like to get both becouse i feel like im missin out if i dont lol

and good things are to be found in reg and fem !

thats my my 2 pence on the subject :tiphat:

This is very true. There's a shocking amount of people who will proceed into doing things blindly and unguided, growers included. I personally take the time to do research because I know that not only is there always more to learn, but there's always somebody who knows something that you don't.

That being said, I started with fems and I'm actually going to try a few different strains (3-5) in my next grow and most of the seeds are regular. Because I started successfully with fems (though I had done enough research that I knew how to identify males and to pull them) I feel more inclined to try some harder, more prestigious strains and I've decided (based on some opinions in this thread) to use regular seeds in addition to fems because I am in search of that "holy grail" phenotype.

not sure about this. maybe s1's are more uniform but I can tell you that super lemon haze was all over the place with phenos.

Value you say, seriously? I can get a 10 pack of Female Seeds Ice strain for 25 bucks. I can grow this one out cure it and will rival The Chem Cut I was gifted years back from Rez's Mommy Tree and the high and the buzz are to damn close to call.

But yes my cut was free so I guess you are correct :)

Is there any reason to go with regular seeds over feminized seeds?

Several...

Male plants for breeding with are only found in Regular seed packs. The feminized seeds are all female.

Regular seeds (unless heavily inbred) display more variation between individuals than feminized seeds.

Regular seeds can be produced organically,, whereas feminized seeds require chemical application.
