This thread ALMOST inspired me to start an opposite thread: which expressions you HATE the most! But, I want to be positive, and besides, many of these expressions alternately amuse and annoy me anyway!
Well, an older slightly crazy guy my single mom dated when we were kids was full of expressions:
If you asked why: "Y, dats where da train turns around".
If you said/did something he felt was dumb: "When they were handing out brains, you thought they said trains, and you took a long ride".
if a bug was hovering around you: "Dats a sooner bug, he'd sooner bite you dan me!"
driving a nail: "no ticky ticky, bangy bangy"
Other expressions of his:
"you got 2 speeds, slow and slower" (or "neutral and reverse")
"you're slower than cold molasses running up hill"
"going ass over tea kettle"
"wouldn't do it for all the tea in China"
"Ann Howe, that's a cousin of mine"
"I'm going home to mother pillow"
"alice bluegown"
"suzy Q"
"2 ton tony galento"
"couhon, portica, keep eating like that and you'll be mister 5 x 5"
"there's a sucker born every minute"
"You took me for a sucker, hook line and sinker"
"children should be seen and not heard"
"born with a sliver spoon in your mouth"
"what are you doing, playing pocket pool?"
"doctor boo-boo" (a shrink)
"merry christmas" (the neighboring farmer)
"reverend liberty" (neighboring preacher with similar last name)
"Frankie not-so-hotra"
"I'll kick you in your pistachio" (or "rastasas")
"mather, that's what makes the grass grow green"
"you live and you learn"
"you're like those guys at [local mental hospital]: they push the wheelbarrow upside down so no one can put anything in it"
"wiseass", "professor honk-honk", "dilbert"
"All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit." -Thomas Paine (1737-1809)
The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of
themselves,
and wiser people, so full of doubt: Bertrand Russell
"To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize."
-Voltaire
“There is no such thing as paranoia; the real situation is always worse than you imagine.” Hunter S. Thompson
"Who are we? We find that we live on an insignificant planet of a humdrum star lost in a galaxy tucked away in some forgotten corner of a universe in which there are far more galaxies than people." -Carl Sagan
"You don't see faith healers working in hospitals for the same reason you don't see psychics winning the lottery." -Unknown
