School daze ....i remember that concert somewhat well , but not all of it (just like most of 1960's, lol) actually that was a great show right at the tail end & winding down of the "beautiful children" movement & the 60's . Time to hit the road and move on out to the country was the next movement or stay & be blown/washed away by the insanity . Earlier Jimi had played at the Filmore and was there the night he burned his guitar on stage but the effect/affect of it was somewhat lost on me & thought the lighter fluid/theatricks was a bit corny .... plus "hey Joe " was never a song that sent me reeling in any case (wasn't into heroin) . Did fall in love later on that night with this band called "Big Black" from out of Africa which had this mountain of a guy banging beautifully on some Congas and the band was a treat . The one who stole the show for me that night wasn't Jimi Hendrix but the other American Black Artist~Blues player and his guitar named "Lucille" ... BB King infected me with the blues that night & put a big smile on my face & mind where Jimi & i didn't quite connect .
Bill Graham was ever having fun marrying many different kinds of music & artists into one evening in those wonderful early days ....as the night Cream played the Filmore ('67) and had to laugh noticing the back wall was plastered with hippies after they opened with Sunshine of Your Love ....that was some of the most driving powerful Sh*T on the planet at the time . But the concert ended that evening with Ravi Shankar taking the stage and completly captivating everyone ( which made you really feel like you got your $2.50 worth , lol.)
* I do remember vividly a crush of people in Berkeley Community crashing in (big noise/police scrambling, people jumping thru , etc) one bank of wire reinforced windows right near me to get in that night ...alas , but that was a Berkeley tradition of breaking windows of businesses etc during the 60's.
