greetings brethren - and welcome to my first grow thread...

general
this is only my second season growing. last year i grew for the first time indoors. the combination of heat stress, spider mites, and being a newb resulted in a mediocre harvest [90g from (5x) 2' tall plants]. this summer i am a guerrilla grower...

ecosystem
deciduous forest (trees lose their leaves in fall). arid foothills - deer, squirrels, mice, rats, other small rodents, snakes, and a varied insect/bird population.

climate
month - average hi, average low, average precipitation
april - 71°F, 45°F, 1.21 in.
may - 76°F, 49°F, 0.43 in.
june - 81°F, 54°F, 0.16 in.
july - 86°F, 55°F, 0.07 in.
august - 87°F, 56°F, 0.09 in.
september - 83°F, 54°F, 0.19 in.
october - 75°F, 48°F, 1.11 in.

Great job setting your thread elevate! I am impressed! Lots of detail, and descriptions, this will help newbies who find your thread later on, so they can see how you did it. It will also help experienced growers help you if you have a problem down the road.

Looking at your weather statistics, I would guess you are near the coast, possibly near where I used to live, but I won't elaborate on my guesses for the sake of your security.

Gotta love that NorCal homegrown!!

update: clones

update: clones

323, BACKCOUNTRY, and caligreen, thanks for showing up with your support - and hello fellow icmaggers - time for the first update (6/13/07)

i would like to introduce you all to my four baby girls. their names are strawberry cough, sour diesel, super og, and soma a+, respectively...

strawberry cough

sour diesel

super og (left) and soma a+ (right)

each clone was planted into a large green plastic cup.

soil mix
nothing fancy - peat moss, perlite, other organic matter, and micro nutrients are in the black gold.

black gold organic potting soil - 3 parts
black gold seedling mix - 2 parts
dolomite lime - winged it

mycorrhizae is applied where the bottom of the rockwool touches the soil.

when the roots grow out of the rockwool cube, the beneficial fungi and bacteria will be there to help...

watering is light, with a minute dose of root stimulator and veg. nutrient...
b'cuzz root: 0-0-0.7
fox farm grow big: 6-4-4

more pics coming soon....

update: plants from seed

update: plants from seed

the seeds were picked out of the harvested trainwreck, and hindu kush clones from last seasons indoor. a male bagseed i was growing in the same grow-space may have been pulled too late... oh well, now i can grow it and see how it turns out. its like my personal strain - in a way. only bad thing is i mixed the seeds i do not know which are from the hindu or which are from the train...

the watering attachment for the gallon jug was $3.00 - probably the best $3.00 i ever spent, well maybe not ever :joint: - the two plants are the same age believe it or not. the one on the right received less sunlight early on (different location).
conditions have increased 10-fold since april... just look at the stats... the first six seeds resulted 2 survivors while the second batch of six resulted 5 survivors (1 did not "pop"). improvements include; location, soil, protection, nutrients, stealth (to be further improved), and so on...

can anybody notice the leaf curling along the sides of the leaves? possible iron deficiency (or other micronutrient)?

2 of the youngest seedlings... the one on the right is doing really well, the best out of its 4 competitors.

the one on the left got naturally topped, maybe by an insect, or is this normal growth?

these are the other 3 youngest. they are not having as nice a time... not sure why :chin:

take care everyone, all this talking makes me want to garden. and it will reach close to 90 today in the afternoon. morning run will be prime...

have fun gardening, i hope some of you are sharing this nice weather :woohoo:

Hey man! The weather has been great up this way in Southern Oregon too, lots of Sun!

I noticed your Mycorrhizae is "Down to Earth" brand, almost all of the store bought organics(and Coco coir) I use are from them, they have great products! If you are ever driving north on I-5 through Oregon, stop off in Eugene and visit thier original store, lots of great stuff for Organic growers, and any alternative lifestyle living type of people.

Looks like you figured out how to post the pics like you wanted?

I'd say the leaf cupping you see there is probably due to moisture issues. The plants cup their leaves to reduce the ammount of sun exposure they get, this helps reduce moisture loss when the plants roots can't supply enough moisture fast enough to the plant.
Usually it means the plants are slightly underwatered, which is not uncommon with young plants in very sunny locations, as they have small root systems.
I'd just try giving more water or the same ammount more often while they are still in the gallon planters.

thanks for the reply BACKCOUNTRY. underwatering/young root system/sunlight are sound causes for the "leaf cupping" we observe - on actually both of the oldest plants now.

yes! i got the picture thing down like a clown charlie brown...

i had no idea that "down to earth" originated in eugene, oregon... it must be good!

The plants look healthy. Keep it stealthy as possible. Like the way you setup your thread too.

update is coming tomorrow early evening. it has been 3 weeks since the last update - significant progress has been made.

update is now...

the 2 young and beautiful girls soma A+ and super og died from lack of water...
the first sour diesel clone and the strawberry cough were hurting, but are now recovering nicely....

strawberry cough

sour diesel

2 "replacement clones" were purchased.
both of them are sour diesel - bringing the total number of plants holding s.d. genetics in my garden to 3...

i have noticed the clones take a while to start growth. i think this may be due to changing the environment - 24/0 fluro --> est. 14/10 natural sun outdoor...
i have heard of new clones beginning to flower when put outdoors because of this shift in the light cycle.

the 2 oldest plants have grown a lot for my standards. however, within the last 2 days they have begun to droop. any experienced input would be appreciated...

notice the new 4' tall fencing  (spray painted flat black for stealth).
these two have been with me since the beginning - and i would be shocked if i ever lost them :nono:. i am thinking too much water, or too little. i doused them today because the last 2 days have been the hottest all season, 95+ F. hopefully it's not too much water, or i probably killed them earlier today when i watered them...
i am transplanting asap to increase the volume of soil able to hold water....

10 super haze crossed with northern lights seeds were planted in separate groups of 5. the second group of five was planted later than the first group.
last time you saw these they were still seeds in a bag...

these 2 pics are of the same 2 plants - one showing height.

the first group had 5/5 poppers! but one got chomped in the first few days. 4/5 are alive now (1 is not pictured)

now for the second group of 5 which had 4/5 poppers.

one of these got chomped almost completely. i will see if its injury can be overcome... but probably looking at a 3/5 for the second batch of super haze x northern lights...

2 whiterhino's, a mountain jam, and 5 more of my indoor cross coming tonight or tomorrow.... i am too tired to add right now... thanks for your patience. nap time zzzzzz

good news

good news

good news everyone! i visited my plot today and the 2 droopy plants seem to have responded to the heavy watering positively! they are still somewhat droopy - but i can tell they have improved. no pictures of the improvement made here, but i do have more pictures....

this is a first grow indoor mystery strain from the second batch - good topping job by the insect here....

and here is another of the same genetics and batch.

here is a breakdown of what has been planted and when....
seeds
  • 6 first grow (indoor) - april 20 - 2 living
  • 6 first grow (indoor) - may 20 - 5 living
  • 5 super haze x northern lights (dispensary) - june 8 - 4 living
  • 2 whiterhino bagseeds (medical) - june 10 - 2 living
  • 5 super haze x northern lights (dispensary) - june 14 - 3 living
  • 1 mountain jam bagseed (medical) - june 14 - 1 living
clones
  • (4) strawberry cough, sour diesel, super og, and soma a+ (medical) - june 12 - 2 living
  • 2 sour diesel (medical) - june 26 - 2 living

total: 17 from seed + 4 clones = 21
some will die, some will be males, so the real number is unknown.

so i still have pictures that i have not posted yet....
- 2 whiterhino (medical bagseed)
- 1 mountain jam (medical bagseed)
- 3 first grow (indoor) seeds, a.k.a. bagseed x trainwreck/ bagseed x hindu kush, a.k.a. my mystery strain!

2 whiterhino

mountain jam

3 of the mystery strain (second batch of 6) - sorry for the bad angle on this photo...

slightly off topic: i am deeply interested in the effects of impure water on plants. iron deposits, calcium, bacteria, whatever the case may be...
tips for doing research on water, or testing?

my first grow i used a homemade water filtration device from a friend. it fit any household garden hose. pvc pipe was used, and there were 2 seperate filtration tubes that the water went through (slowly) until it reaches the dripper at the end. the skinny dripper tube from the end is stuck into the watering jug you want to use. apologies for not knowing more on how the filtration device works. i am going to look more into water filtration... any input is welcome!

First off, you have a very cool thread Elevate! I probly would've missed it if not for Backcountry ;)
As for water filtration, I think the "cleaner" your water is the better your results will be. Maybe use a carbon filter in-line to clean your water? Might be a bit difficult on a guerilla mission though. Oh BTW, drooping in 95+ heat will cause temporary drooping no matter how well watered. No big deal, just keep them well watered. Are the big ones in pots? Looks like they're burried? I like the pics, keep 'em coming and good luck.

hello LORD BENIS - and welcome
that quote by teddy is excellent....

the plants are in one gallon pots. tomorrow the big ones will go into 5 gallon pots. the pots are buried in soil to elevate the height at which the cages can protect... since my cages simply rest on ground level. i.e. if the top of the pot is at ground level - the protection will increase in height proportionate to the height of the pot. that is all...

the big ones have drooped again (my fault)
a bigger pot (5 gallon) will hold more in general.
it is no exaggeration that all but a few of my plants have outgrown their pots....i went to move the 2 oldest clones today and the roots had grown out the handmade drainage holes into the ground snugly.

nice elevate!!! I know what you mean about the roots, fuck man Ive had to cut my coco fiber pots because the roots had grown so far into them. I think when you transplant you should have better luck with them holding more water for sure. It's really hot now a days, but you look like you've got it under control. Those mystery seeds are nice man!!! Fuck I love wondering what they could be ya know? Oh man oh man, I hope thats a female mountain jam there, honestly I've never had it myself but the strain sounds so good I've always wanted to try! Nice crop man, a bunch of A+ strains bro, PEACE
