my friend got home from out of state last night and we wanted to get his basement warm because we were hosting a party... I offer to go cut kindling out of logs to get the fire started (choking up on the axe and cutting bits out of the log) but about halfway through when I throw down the axe I didn't quite move my hand away in time...BASH right into the fat on my thumb. :bashhead:

I dont have insurance and dont have a lot of money because of bills and yadda yadda.

basically I wanna know if this has happened to any of you cats that can direct me in the right type of healing of the wound. It definately needs stitches but so far I just had some friends squeeze the wound shut and put some "new skin" on it and some butterfly bandages.

the wound is about an inch long and 1 1/2 - 2 cm deep.

any info would be appreciated because I work with my hands A LOT!!!

thanks T :bashhead:

um, go to a doctor if at all possible... not worth losing a finger/hand if it gets nasty.

can you move if and everything like normal? i guess what i'm asking is if it's just the skin that is cut... if so as a last resort you might be able to just keep it sealed up, but it'll probably take a long time to heal and you risk infection. most of all just keep it clean.

yeah I can move it and everything no problem...doesnt hurt that much at all. been dumping peroxide on it (oww) and taking amoxicilin (sp) for risk of infection.. cant go to the dr...just the ER. and I dont have the funds to pay for it because I've been pinching my pennys recently for all the new bills coming in.

just wanted to know if this or anything similar has happened to anybody..(big open wound that they healed themselves...rather than going to the dr.)

why the hell was your hand on the log when you swung down the axe?

Because he wanted to hurt himself... :muahaha:

Dude, just keep it clean and bandaged, it'll get better.

a month ago i accidentally kicked a sharp piece of metal while I was walking in my backyard. it was sticking out behind some boards and i wasn't paying attention. ended up going through my shoe, through my sock, and into my foot. left about an inch long gash that went pretty deep. definitely should have had stitches, but never bothered to go to the dr. the worst part of it was walking on it kept opening it and preventing it from healing, so if you don't get stitches i'd say keep it sealed up it possible, but check on it often to make sure it doesn't get infected.

All that besides...you need to go to a Doctor-- It is not a question of manliness...it is a question of tetanus and infection-- :nono:

sorry to hear bout the thumb bro.......
still feel like you need some stitches? go to
a medical supplies store and buy a suture kit
or any first rate first aid kit these days has
a suturing kit in it, a few shots of JD, a few
bong hits & let one of your bro's play doctor.

It won't look real pretty but makes for a great story.

haha good call S4L. my one bro was about to play doctor today (his dad worked in the OR and snagged a few important things time to time again.). they had stitches and a needle but they were talking about doing it as I woke up this morning and I wasnt having it. definately need to have something to numb any kind of feeling because it hurts enough as is to the touch.

thanks for looking out bro!

Not to be a pest...but without antibiotics...you are doomed-- Honestly bro..if it is that bad...you have severe tissue damage...compounded by possible bone fragmentation-- You need to get it looked at...(non-Female) Period!!

ive had TONS of deep, bad lacerations that I should have gone to the doctor for (mostly from bike riding).

I have a rule that if it needs stitches and it's not on my face then I don't worry about it. (I happen to like scars anyway)

All I do is keep it clean and covered 'til it's pretty well healed....never had a problem.

As long as you can get the bleeding to stop you should be fine. I cut the tip of my pinky off and just taped it back on. It took two days to stop bleeding but did and eventually healed. If you cannot stop the bleeding then you will probably have to go to the er.

If you got it clean and its no longer bleeding the stitches will just cause more trauma.

If you NEED to go to the ER, they HAVE to take you in even if you don't have insurance. You can probably even set up a monthly payment plan, that is if you NEED to go.
