im not sure about the sog but unless you wrote it wrong you said 'with the least branching possible" well thats what this technique does it make it massivly bushy. So if you dont want massive branchiness dont do this.

I thought the point of this was removing the fan leaves and not the nodes that generate new growth?

Just wondering about defolin the sog fan leaves and wondering if that would be a bit drastic for a sog style plant. I would leave the nodes as they were and not trim any nodes themselves but rather the sun attracting big ol fan leaves.

If you read the very first post Its all about removing leaves, when there young in veg every time you take the leaves all except the newest set it creates many branches. Now it sounds like you want to do this half way and just remove the largest of fan leaves to get some light which would be perfectly exceptable in my eyes. Up untill i had started trying this thats what i did. actually i lollipopped them and then removed all the largest leaves threw the grow.

Not really the same thing, removing leaves AND cutting nodes so they turn into two nodes is totally different. You can cut a million fan leaves and not have a new node form which you can't say for actual node/branch cutting.

i hope my thought process above made sense, im medicated but maybe just confused on getting 1 node into 2 nodes to create a bush and simply removing extra fan leaves to allow light.

@ medmaker no one as far as im aware is cutting nodes?? the point is to start with a plant like this one.
picture.php

remove all its leaf, and let it grow for about 5 days, remove all its leaf again, and in ten days it looks like this 1
picture.php

let it grow and repeat the 5 day process twice more.and it should look like this.
picture.php

keep letting it grow leaf, and then 5/7 days remove it. eventually after about 6 weeks you end up with one of these.
picture.php
hope that helps.

Well my clones finally got big enuff to try this on. I started on 2 outta 8. in 3 days things had changed so much I did the other 6. Now 7-10 days into it I ask myself why didn't I try this sooner. I'm signed on. Clones are 3 weeks into veg. 1 or 2 more weeks to flip. Hot Damn!!!

sounds great

I have about 30 girls that are germin and soon to be veggin so I might try it on a couple and see if it works for me compared to leaving them be. I LOVE cutting leaves off anyways but maybe I need to do MORE especially when you cram a ton of ladies into a 4x4.

If anything removing decent amount of fan leaves during a sog veg will allow the smaller bud sites the ability to grow versus lollipoppin them.

Funny thing is when I finally decided to go for it I chickened out for about a week. The clones were smaller and the 12/12 is a rotating grow. To young for the clones and I kept reading and opted not to do the flowers. Wanted to start off on the right foot. But even doing the clones it felt weird. I'm an old fart who has had the "leaf growth issue" burnt in my brain. Its almost a gene in my dna, or something like that.

I still remember 1 photo in particular that I think was in the first Ed and Mel book. Twas 2 outdoor plants, 1 "normal" and 1 that looked like every leaf was taken at the flip and continued until near completion. Their point being what we could guess as normal. I've been stuck on this for over 30 years. I guess 1 photo and few details was not being very fair. So much has been emphasized about the healthy green leaf. My brain kept trying to rationalize and explain to me again why I was doing this. This went so far back against my basic instinct. Wow!!!

Old Dog learns new trick in his fifties, and I'll say it again, "Hot Dang!" 2 of which will flip real soon to replace the 1 coming down.

This is the best technique for high yield I personnaly have ever come across.

Thanks.

Well its time for the next round to begin. Ill get pics about every 4 days again for updates. Last bloom there were 5 plants this time i have 7. without defoliating i could only fit 5 at the most and that was pushing it. Heres the start of the pics. I found the best thing for me to do is not complicate things. K.I.S.S. I started defoliating at day 14 bloom. I dont see where it could benifit defoliating in veg. But thats up to you i guess. Peace LL

29 days old, the one that was defoliated a week ago seems to in fact have larger bud sites at this point than the non defoliated one

Update

Update

This is my first grow, three weeks into veg from clones, looking great. I read this thread a few days ago and immediately started picking leaves, nothing major, and then noticed that the plants were getting bushier, and I would trim more, and they would get even bushier... very impressive. I'm close to switching into flower, this morning I trained everything a little more,

and tonight I see they've filled out nicely, a little too nicely.

Moisture everywhere from leaves resting on one another. So I did a hardcore defoliation.

We'll see how things turn out! I'm feeling hopeful.

Update: Three days later the girls are re-leafing quickly. It was awesome to get to view all of the branching when the leaves were off. I see lots of potential bud sites, and lots of branches that would have been nothings but that thickened up into somethings after the defoliation. There hasn't been much growth in overall canopy height during these last three days, but, again, the bush is getting bushier and filling out nicely.

For my next grow I think defoliation in conjunction with a scrog and a topping will really fill out my shed.

Best thread ever

Best thread ever

After a year of grows learning from another forum, where this method is considered blasphemy, and to suggest such would cause major name calling and ostracising, I'm glad to find a forum where matters are intellegently discussed and name calling kept to a minimum.

I am very impressed with the results I've seen in this thread.

An actual thread with folks that have used the method described and not just read something written by an "expert", and spouted that read information as gospel as if reading something trumps experience. Then copying and pasting some web article as proof of their "knowledge".

I decided to look at other forums after my "home forum" went down and stumbled across this thread and have spent several hours reading. (I always reseach the forum for information before beginning a new grow to see if there is anything that can help.) I plan to use this method for my Homegrown Fantaseed Big Bud seeds.

Thanks to everyone here for the timely information and all the pics. :thank you:

8 chem d bx1 clones left in there now. the sour bubbles and querkle is chopped and trim. pretty sure yield was helped based on past grows after multiplying by 2 for the number of 4x4 sides in my tent. I had filled it up with 54 clones in 1 gal grow bags and yield was not what I think it will be per side in comparison to this grow. just a hunch as the numbers are not out yet but when the chems comed down you know it adds up fast!

look Im not trying to be a jerk but you shouldnt tell people what you did me. If i hadnt known about starting in veg i could possibly be screwed. the whole post has emphasized not to start this in flower. be careful what you say is my point. its not a good thing to totally strip your plant in flower. If you dont have the branches that you form by doing this in veg you could be screwed.

The key here is that every grow is different. The criteria being: crowding factor, height, branchiness, Your results will vary depending on these and a hundred other variables. The best thing is to familiarize yourselves with defoliation in veg at no risk and move from there. In veg, plants build more branches and sites with each defoliation and releaf cycle. Sometimes I allow more releaf cycle in bud if the plants are not quite filling all the space. They soon do, with this kind of dynamic management. So the method is not on a hard schedule or necessarily performed at absolutely prescribed stages or intervals. Once you become used to the look of defoliated plants and the releaf response therof...it is easy to determine when they need the next defoliation. Every strain will behave differently so do not draw conclusions about defoliation from a single clones response. And as always...you must be able to reproduce healthy, vigorous plants at will or you may have other problems.

you folks might remember this plant from earlier in the thread. i posted pics of it before and after complete radical defoliation. every fan leaf that had a visible stem was removed. this was at 21 days flower. it was not touched again.

first a few pics before and after defoliation and then some the day of cutting and trimming.
