I am using this method currently, but will not do it in veg as I see no reason. I get plenty of bud sites without taking off leaves. Too many really.

I did this 7 weeks or so into flower and am cutting 11 weeks. No probs at all. Next run I will deleaf as soon as they start to flower. Would recommend this to anyone. I guess some strains will not like it, but all the others will have bigger buds from it.

Thanks to OP for putting this out here.

I think because the examples of the OP's defoliation is extreme, i.e. MOST leaves pruned, a first attempt at this in bloom could severely shock the plant.
Preparing would not produce such a shock.
What we did/do is probably a less severe defoliation, i.e. SOME leaves are pruned, can be done anytime and this also helps bud growth to an extent.

Right cool that makes sense thanks bro :)

Thanks for the excellent photos Benzo. I'm sure we would all really really really like to see a followup photo in a week or so.

What strain is that?

How far into flower are the plants?

Thanks! And I will definitely do a follow up. Those are DJ Shorts Blueberry. The front left one is a Speed Queen.

They are all in coco:perlite 4:1.

Feeding Per Gallon, In ML's : 6 micro, 9 bloom, 5 Magical, 1 Pro-Tek Silica and using Drip Clean.

I am feeding them with Blumat drippers.

Tomorrow, Saturday the 21st is 2 weeks, and first application of Kool Bloom Powder.

Check out my grow thread for more info!!

so can you defoiate any time during veg, say past 4 wks.
I'm at 7 weeks veg and going to flip yo 12/12 this weekend.
can I trim them now?
some of the fan leaves are huge and blocking lots of lite.

Man this thread really caught my eye, ive read almost every page but all i can see has been about defol. clones. More than likely ive just missed.

can this be done on seed plants say 4-6 nodes high, LST shouldnt be a problem but was just wondering about the seed plant over clones???

Thanks so much

Great stuff everyone. Today is day 22 bloom for me and i just finished my 2nd round of defoliation. First defoliation was at day 14 bloom. Seemed like it took longer than trimmin. I took my time and made sure things were right. Here are the pictures i have up to this point. I have 2 -c99, 2 -Apollolicious and 3 Chem D. Under a 600 all in 3 gallon pots. Next update in 4 days. Peace LL

Day 14 Before

Day 14 After

Day 18

Day 22 Before

Day 22 After

If theres one thing you shouldnt do its over think this defoliation. Its super easy just take it slow and do what works for you. If your not sure do one plant and see what happens. RePeace LL

It certainly could, but part of 'finding a keeper' is knowing the plants natural 'plant structure'.

Now, of course, if your always going to defol, the 'natural structure' might be considered irrelevant.

To me an good analogy would be a human taking steroids, before they reached their peak physical size.

You could do it, but knowing what your actual baseline is, before attempting to alter things is a good thing (never done roids, always intrigued though, the pills are suppose to suck vs. injections, and im not injecting shit probably made in a mexican bathtub).

thank you for posting your "grow tunnel" thread way back. Helped me soooo much. This thread plus that as important as Lucas' contribution.

(agent-smith archived it... I got it from his posts)

following pics are defoliation in a 400W (1 lb goal) cabinet and a vertical system. Didn't start in veg so can't say "using your technique" but did it after reading your thread. (controlled stretch and increased nodes by raising ec and using MH until 4 wks in)

peace.

pics are today. before-after in the cabinet and 3 days after second round of stripping in the vertical system. Biggups to Xare for getting me to look at this thread

Looks like you get the right kind of response. Nice job. Glad you liked the GroTunnel. Hasn't been much discussion there, but plenty of views.

Well I'm so happy I cant stand it. I flipped 2 after 7 days, excellent branching and filling out. At 10 whats in veg (6) have gone wild. Just freaking amazing. I'll flip 2 more in the next day or 2. The veg space is filled again with less plants now. I'll "DF" again at 14 days whether in flip or veg. But man, you cant tell now that this was ever done. Amazing comeback. Whodathunkit!

Just curious tho, is there a point in flower, that one should stop doing this? I think I've got it for about 3 times which would get me in the 5/6 weeks of flip at 2 weeks apart. Thanx again and thanx for sharing!

No reason to quit now. Releafing is less aggressive in the last few weeks but still demanding removal whenever there is shading of productive buds.

Hey im on my first grow and didnt defoliate during veg as had read so much conflicting advice but when i got to 3rd week of flowering i had to start deleafing as there was nowhere near enough light getting through. Now in 5th week & the bud sites have thickened big time & lower bud sites are going crazy.

I just wonder why you say this as i havent seen any probs wit doing it late but am i missing something? Is there a specific reason you shouldnt? Been my 1st grow im learning the whole time.

Wicked thread

I've given inconsistent advice in this regard mainly to dissuade the inconfident or those with less than vigorous plants. Sounds like you took the leap and ignored my advice to your benefit. Good on ya. I have also related that I thoroughly strip plants at any stage at my discretion.

Lifeless said it best that it is too easy to overthink defoliation. Once you have done it and seen the results it becomes easier and obvious when it is needed.

Thanks to OP for putting this out here.

I should clarify that my insistence on defoliating in veg is a part of prepping a plant to finish out as a bonsai shrub that is allowed only 32" cubed but intended to yield over half pound. Your needs and space allowances may vary.
