......... a trial balloon perhaps to see what it would do? Plausible deniability if the possible 'facts' ever got out? Could a certain percentage of their own citizens (elderly, weak, disabled) be expendable/collateral damage?
Maybe they didn't want to kill people but rather disrupt our/the world economy? What could be more 'deadly' than sitting back and watching as your enemy/competitor shuts down its own economy and then goes in to an inevitable recession/depression as your country buys up its resources on the cheap ?
Given the multi levels of security in the Wuhan lab it's highly unlikely that a lab leak was an accident. A 'crazed' lab worker or deliberate release is far more likely.
Remember the anthrax scare after 9/11, supposedly traced back to the USA lab and 'proven' to be released by lab worker Steven Hatfill, then the backtracking and once again 'proven' to be released by lab worker Bruce Ivins? Case closed after Ivins committed suicide. Well, not really as the proving was all based on pretzel logic at best. That case was never closed 'cause no one wanted to look any deeper or open that can of worms.
Also remember the initial purpose of these labs created in the 1950/60's was biowarfare/control and plenty of experiments were done on citizens right here in the good ole USA, until word got out.
Personally I believe the virus evolved naturally in the Wuhan bat population and it was an unfortunate synchronicity that it was located so closely to the lab where they just happened to be studying that very same virus - sh*t happens and God laughs, etc.
Interesting to see some one who has paid attention to the history of this as opposed to what ever the media wished to toss against the barn door.

I don't think it is a purposeful bioweapon. If you wanted to make a weapon in a virus lab you would be modifying filoviruses like ebola and marburg with an already existing high infection and death rate.

A top gain-of-function scientist admitted in an interview last September that viruses can be lab engineered without leaving a trace.
Professor Ralph Baric, an epidemiologist at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and professor of immunology and microbiology at the UNC School of Medicine, has been studying coronaviruses for 30 years. In a video interview last year with Italian outlet Presa Diretta, Baric was extremely direct about his controversial work, and the implications for COVID19.
“You can engineer a virus without leaving any trace,” Baric said. “The answers you are looking for, however, can only be found in the archives of the Wuhan laboratory.”
“In the chimera we made in America in 2015 with the SARS virus, together with Professor Zheng-li Shi of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, we had left signature mutations, so it was clear that it was the result of genetic engineering,” he continued. “But, otherwise there is no way to distinguish a natural virus from one made in the laboratory.”
“The only gain-of-function that occurred in that virus is that we changed its antigenicity,” Baric said. “And what that data tells you is that any vaccine or antibody that you’d made against the original virus from 2003 wasn’t going to protect the public against this new virus if it should emerge.”
In the 2015 research, Chinese and American researchers inserted the spike protein into a SARS virus, which allows the virus to enter human cells, and created a hybrid virus capable of infecting the humans, that was tested on humanized mice.
