Looks like the fatalities are piling up at the rate of about 10 thousand per day, meaning that the official one million mortality mark is about three days away, though it has likely been passed long ago, given the under-reporting of the true picture in places like India, Brazil and North Korea.

The USA is underreporting too. Don't kid your self. Excess deaths in the usa are from thirty to fifty percent over the covid death toll.

81% of the healthcare workers are overworked with risk of a burnout in Holland.

Map of the situation at the moment. The darker the color the more infections.

A friend in my home town had a brain bleed. Its a small town of about 10000 with a good hospital they are overloaded. Mask mandate failed at city council as city council had no courage. Now a month later they are swamped as are many hospital in Missouri. They sent my friend away as no beds so he is transported to a hospital 100.miles away but no.luck there as they were full of covid too so he wound up in St Louis 300 miles from home. People die because of covid even if they dint have covid

COVID-19 MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF PARKINSON'S DISEASE

Scientists warn of the "silent wave" of neurological problems that may follow dreaded waves of infection.

Since the first corona infection occurred almost a year ago, doctors and scientists have been gathering more and more information about the virus. In the meantime, we also know that the coronavirus causes damage to the brain in various ways during and after infection. Researchers are therefore very concerned. After all, is the world prepared for a 'silent wave' of neurological problems that may lie ahead as a result of the corona crisis?

Brain
In recent months we have learned that the coronavirus leaves its traces in the brain. "While scientists are still learning how the SARS-CoV-2 virus can enter the brain and central nervous system, there is no question that it will get there," said researcher Kevin Barnham. "We now know that the virus can damage brain cells, which can even lead to the death of nerve cells."

In a new study, the researchers highlight the possible longer-term neurological consequences of COVID-19. They refer to this as the 'silent wave'. The symptoms can be severe - such as brain damage due to lack of oxygen - or milder, such as loss of the sense of smell . Even though it can be even more dangerous than you might think. “We found that an average of three in four corona patients suffer from a loss of smell or a reduced odor,” says researcher Leah Beauchamp. “While this symptom may seem like little cause for concern at first glance, it actually tells us a lot about what's going on inside. And that is that there is an acute inflammation in the olfactory system. ”

Parkinson's
And a loss of the sense of smell, we also see that in another disease. A common phenomenon of Parkinson's disease is an odor disorder. About 70 to 90 percent of Parkinson's patients lose their sense of smell. The deterioration of the sense of smell often arises in the early stages of the disease; sometimes even years before other symptoms are visible. So this is a striking similarity between COVID-19 and Parkinson's disease.

The researchers cautiously suggest that there could be a link between COVID-19 and Parkinson's. We can learn from the neurological consequences that followed the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918. The flu regularly resulted in a severe form of Parkinson's. The risk of Parkinson's disease even increased two to three times. “Given that the world has now been hit by another viral pandemic, it is very worrying that a global increase in neurological diseases could potentially develop again,” Barnham said.

Diagnosis
The clinical diagnosis of Parkinson's disease is currently based on a serious deterioration of motor skills. However, research shows that by then 50 to 70 percent of cell loss in the brain has already occurred. "By waiting for this stage of the disease to diagnose and treat it, you have already missed an important window for potential protective therapies," Barnham says. but it is possible that the loss of the sense of smell will help. "We believe that loss of smell is a new way to detect a person's risk of developing Parkinson's disease early," said Beauchamp.

Link
The findings from the study indicate that the current pandemic could potentially lead to various neurological disorders. And COVID-19 may even increase the risk of Parkinson's disease. To keep a close eye on this, the researchers propose to monitor and screen corona patients for a long time, even after recovery. “To fully understand the neurological complications of COVID-19, long-term monitoring is important,” the researchers write in their study . "That way we can make sure that healthcare is prepared for a third wave of the virus in the form of Parkinson's disease."

Scientists have also warned before about the outbreak of a real Parkinson's pandemic. The number of people with Parkinson's is currently increasing rapidly. In fact, researchers estimate that the number of people with Parkinson's disease could have increased to 17 million by 2040. Barnham says it is clear what we have to do. “The world was taken by surprise the first time (after the Spanish flu pandemic, ed.), But it doesn't have to happen again,” he says. “We now know what to do. In addition to a strategic approach to protect public health, tools for early diagnosis and better treatment will be key. ” The researchers therefore call for urgent measures to be taken so that we can identify neurodegeneration at an early stage and to monitor people infected with SARS-CoV-2 virus in the long term.

Same here in okiedokey. Our whole state is red according the department of health and the CDC but the schools use a model that shows us at "orange.level2"

one of the over-riding guidelines in the tech community is to know what you know & to know what you don't know - and to be happy/ willing to collaborate with people with "different knowledge" (aka your co-workers).

People act as if they know all about Covid19. a virus that is probably new that was probably unleashed on the world late in 2019.

A virus that is also, probably man-made.

anybody who pretends to know the effects 5 years out ? ... doesn't.

i have a feeling that the long term effects will make the people who died look lucky.

that's from listening to relatives of Covid "long term'ers" - patients who got it but never really recovered.

and lung & heart scans of people who have NO SYMPTOMS - but have diminished heart & lung function due to Covid19 infection.

and in the long run, I have a hunch that Covid19 will end up being another STD - sexually transmitted disease.

i.e. people will choose to risk it in connection with their romantic lives.

Diabetes Drug Metformin May Reduce COVID-19 Death Risk

Source: MedicineNet Health News

Can a common, first-line diabetes drug protect COVID-19 patients from death? Studies suggest a link, but trials necessary to prove a connection may never happen, experts say.

People with type 2 diabetes stand a higher risk of developing a severe COVID 19 infection, according to several international studies. Metformin has been correlated in at least four retrospective studies with reduced risk of COVID-19 death in these patients.

NYC: New Year's Eve 2020 has been effectively CANCELLED.

It seems 2020 will alter one final tradition before it wraps up, and there will even be a countdown for it -- New York's iconic ball drop for New Year's Eve is going virtual.

Organizers of the annual festivities in Times Square have announced that in order to say good riddance to this year and ring in 2021 ... it will have to be a "virtually enhanced celebration."

According to the Times Square Alliance, there will still be some scaled-back and COVID-cautious live events ... but the goal this year, for obvious reasons, is to pull off festivities like the ball drop safely.

One thing that will never change is the ticking of time and the arrival of a New Year. On December 31st, the Ball will drop in Times Square.

Pharmacological perspective: glycyrrhizin may be an efficacious therapeutic agent for COVID-19

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the previously unknown pathogen, severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is now a global pandemic. There are no vaccines or specific treatments against this new virus; therefore, there is an urgent need to advance novel therapeutic interventions for COVID-19. Glycyrrhizin is a triterpene saponin with various biological functions and pharmacological effects. This brief article discusses the therapeutic potential of glycyrrhizin for the treatment of COVID-19 from the perspective of its pharmacological action, including binding angiotensin-converting enzyme II (ACE2), downregulating proinflammatory cytokines, inhibiting the accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), inhibiting thrombin, inhibiting the hyperproduction of airway exudates, and inducing endogenous interferon.

Keywords: COVID-19, SARS-COV-2, Glycyrrhizin
