Compact SOG with CFL's

Wow, the more I read of this thread the more I love it!
Your style, innovation, and sustainability concepts are beyond excellent Dr.Bud. Your work is truly geneious! :smoke:

But what I'm really curious about is if anyone here has tried doing a SOG from seed in 16 oz containers? I'm a PC case grower with about 22" of vertical height to work with (my PC case is about 26", but my 70 watt HPS and cool tube type system takes up 4") and I'm hoping to find a way to grow a few plants from seed without having to train or prune them at all. So I'm wondering if I go 12/12 straight from seed, use a good soil mix, and feed properly if I might be able to grow a few plants from seed in 16oz containers without the need for any kind of pruning or training?

Mind you I've done a few ScrOG grows in my PC cases and they went just fine, but I'm really looking for a way to grow in my small 22" of vertical height without the need for training and the yield isn't really important for me since I'm really just a hobby grower.

So, has anyone tried growing 12/12 from seed in these little 16oz containers? If anyone has tried this I'd really love to hear what your results were like and how big your plants got :smoke:

mr. micro, my previous grow was 5 plants, 12/12 from seed with cfls and 3 of these were finished in i think were 3.5" pots which may be even less than that bottle would give. i was curious about 12/12 from seed in small containers as you are and i must say i was pleasantly surprised at the results. i didnt have a scale but i would guess i got about 3-4g from each of these 12" plants (from top of pot) and would've yielded better if they didn't have to recover from an early deficiency. it was nice cause the males were the ones who stretched a bunch early so i was able to get rid of them early. with your skills and hps, i know you could do even better. hope that helps! good luck to ya and can't wait to see how it turns out!

Awesome tngreen! :D
You did exactly what I was wondering about! This was the "5th Grow: Budosia" that was linked to in your signature right? Your plants look great, nice and compact with that single cola profile I'm hoping for. Did you have to prune them to a single cola or did they just grow that way naturally in those small containers?
And honestly even if I only got an 1/8th ounce from each plant I'd be totally happy, since I only smoke once a month or so and I usually end up giving away most of my harvest to friends.

I'm also wondering what you thought of 11/13 from seed? Do you think it gave you more compact plants than 12/12 from seed and did they finish much faster than they usually do under 12/12?

Anyhoo, thanks again for sharing your wisdom! It seems like you've already done (and succeeded marvelously at) what I'm hoping to do on my next grow :smoke:

Thats the one! i didn't have to prune at all, that is just how they grew. i would imagine some strains would have some more branching though but would be limited because of the small root space. i liked the 11/13 from seed and still use this schedule for flowering. i would say it did help them mature a little faster to get them into flower sooner. as far as flowering time, im not sure since this was the only run i was able to do with this strain so can't compare to one with veg time. The hardest part is keeping them happy in the small containers.

Ahh cool stuff, do you think the 11/13 schedule reduces the plant's final height at all or does it just cause them to flower quicker?

I'm guessing what you mean by the hardest part being keeping them happy in small containers is that when they start to mature you have to water them every day, right? Or is there some other things I should be thinking about or special things I should do to keep them from becoming root bound?

Thanks again for all the advice man, I think I'm actually going to try out this method with my current grow to use it as a test run for my final PC case build. I'm hoping to be able to SOG 3 or 4 plants from seed in about 3/4 of a square foot of space :D

The answer's to your questions lie within.........12/12 from seed.....nuttin' special.....pulled a seed outta my buddies ashtray and stuck in the flowering box.....no trimming no special care...
63 dayz later....11.2 grams dried

Nice man! I have watched you with your CFL's long enough. I'm gonna put them threw a test of my own. :muahaha:

All though I won't be going the soda bottle deal, It just seems to me like I would have to water two or three times a day?? I thought about building a custom flowering pot to run a SOG in it ??? I haven't made up my mind yet, I don't even know which strain I will run yet ? But I will be like you one day! :joint:

This is the Cabinet I have thrown together over the past couple of days

Hi Doc!

I'm interested in finding a strain that would be good for rejuv like Chesaw, what strains from regular seed banks have you noticed to be faster to rejuv than others?

And do indicas and sativas have a clear difference between their rejuv time?

Also, how does Chesaw perform in a regular veg time grow? Has it ever gone outdoors? Must be a monster plant in any case!

Hi, this is my first post on here but I have been a bit of a lurker for the last few months. I have 2 grows under my belt, both with pretty good results but this method sounds very intriguing. I don't know if it's the kush talking but could this be done using those 1 inch rockwool cubes, giving you 1 little plant per square inch? I could see mold being an issue with them being so tightly packed and all, but what do you think?

A 2 ft. by 2 ft. space would be 576 square inches, so in theory you could cram that many plants in there. I don't know if this is how coco works but maybe you could set a coco mat down underneath the rockwool, so the roots could continue down into it. Now thinking about this a little more that does sound a little rediculous. But are there any ways you would recommend to decrease pot size (example: using the rockwool instead of soil) to further increase the numbers for other micro growers. If this doesn't make any sense then I apologize, but I just had to ask.

Thanks

Wow, thanks a lot Dr.Bud!

It sounds like my plan should work just fine then, it seems to just be a simple fact that the smaller the container the roots are in the smaller the plant will be as long as you give it proper light, temperature, nutrients, and air. Nothing complicated really, so thanks for showing me not to over complicate things (which is something I tend to do a lot LOL). :smoke:

I believe it wont work. There is a limit on how much you can reduce the rootball. I think the 16oz DdBG uses is near the limit.

In other forum, one guy is trying to flower with 250cc pots (8oz) and plants are flowering, but they didnt stretch at all. Reducing further the rootball still using hydro mediums likely would reduce too much plant's grow. Anyway, its just a opnion, the best way to know it is trying it.

try doing this with 3"x3" or 4"x4" cubes :joint:

I thought about the whole rootball thing and that is where the coco mat underneath idea came up. Would the roots from the rockwool continue growing into the coco medium? If so, maybe it wouldn't be 1 per square inch but ,maybe one plant per 2 or 3 square inches. I've got some clones just chillin in the 1 inch cubes right now about a foot tall. Roots are pouring out the bottom, and I think if they had just a little more space they could be as big as the finishing plants that the doctor has.

They will fall over in 1" cubes.....
Unless ya keep them in a sheet :rasta:

it's been done in film containers... with large wire outriggers

Good luck in a 1' cube 1 screw up in PH and yur done.....be very careful :joint:

How many plants when you have the most plants in your cab?
Also how big of a drainage hole you put in the bottom of the bottles you grow in and how big?

Since i have stated my first grow.i have done as much amount of research into growing my plants.I have a cab tha is 4 feet tall x 2 feet wide x 4 feet <>
Hoping it will do the trickit was just chillin in my basement.Hoping to add a small carbon filter but funds are low.First grow i will be with out.Not much if any smell in my 12-12 cab my 24 hour cab stinks!!!!!! @4 hour cab will be going outside the first or 2sec week of may dep on weather conditions. Is ther lots of smell with micro grows is it depends on strian only? This hydo i am chillin with is costly, harvested to qiuckly, wet,if it's still wet def is not cured.Boo

So, in theory a plant could complete its entire flowering cycle inside of the 1 inch cubes? Would the coco mat be benefecial at all? Would the yield be affected by the smaller pots (example being: could I still get 7-15 grams per plant? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just trying to do as much research as I can to optimize my growing.

Yo Doc, i was wondering could i still achieve the same results even if i dont submerge water?! Its gonna be hard for me to submerge all of the grow bags but if i absolutely have to, on order to obtain the nice yields i will.

Yes it will work...
And the coco mat would work well.....
The yield would only be limited by how well they are fed.....
and how you "Hold them Up"

Now with that said....you will not be able to....

Move the plants each week (for the best light & to maintain rotation)

Do a Perpetual Harvest (the plants will attach to the mats with roots...the dead roots(from previous grows) in the mat will reak Havoc with your PH)

So yes it can be done..... :joint:
