Hey dontstepongrass, welcome and thank you for stopping in.
Updates at the moment, the plants are looking great. They are coming along nicely. A week or two ago I decided it was time for a little tidying up of the plants. I have an abundance of dry bamboo that I used as stakes for the 1 x gals. I also used some string to pull the buds up. The stems were getting weak from the constant shuffling around. MUCH easier to water and move around now. Really should have done that a while ago lol.
All the plants in the cab are at day 73 of 12/12. I'm going to be keeping a close eye on trichs and harvest a couple plants every so often so I can compare smoke. I'm curious to see if there will be any noticeable differences with them. Some of the 1 gals are starting to yellow so I'm hoping they fade out nicely.
As for the plants harvested Monday, as of today, there is one jar at 64% humidity, one at 63%, and two at 59%. The two jars in the 60's have been opened a few times due to their humidity getting close to 70%. They smell amazing and considering how dry/crispy they were when added to the jars, they have softened up very nicely. I'll be honest, with how dry they were, I was a little nervous while trimming since I thought I had over dried them, but it appears I may have done it just right. I also noticed that they have condensed or something since the level the buds were at when jarred, compared to today, is much lower.
I have a couple Nirvana strains in the fridge that I'm thinking of germinating. I'm hoping for better luck now, than I had in the past. We will see. If not, I'll just have to order new. As for pics, I think I need a few more post before I can add any more pics to my gallery... As soon as I get there, I'll be sure to post a much needed picture update for everyone. Got the camera all charged up so I'll start getting some together.
I noticed you said you used the largest weather strip for light leaks. I have the exact same cab as you and use the D shapes weather strip and have a problem the swing of door pulling off the strip over time. Is it any better with the larger strip? I'm so tired of it I've toyed with putting piano hinges on it.
Soulrebel239, welcome and thank you for the comments. I went through TONS of designs before I came up with this one. Lots of trial/error and LOADS of research. I'd sit around and try to brainstorm any cons or what if's of the setup and tweek what needed tweeking. Comments like yours are very much appreciated.
webecat, that is correct. I want to say it was Frost King E/O 3/4 in. x 7/16 in. High-Density Rubber Foam Weather-Strip. I'm not 100% sure on that, but I'm fairly certain this is the one I went with. I placed the weather stripping on the frame of the cabinet and it was practically the same width as each panel. Now, if I have to do it again, I'm going to go with 3/4" x 5/16" or smaller. The width of the stripping is fine, but the thickness of it can be a nuisance at times. For instance, I've gotten myself into the habit of pushing the weather stripping in the corners, back in to place once the cab is closed.
The main culprit seems to be the bottom right corner. The other 3 corners rarely need adjusting but the bottom right needs to be pushed in every time I open the door. I feel if the thickness of the stripping was slightly smaller, I would be good to go. I only went with the thicker stuff to be certain I had a good seal. After putting it on and testing it out, it compresses the stripping in half if not more so I think a little smaller would work great. Hopefully you'll get the stripping issue resolved. Have never looked into piano hinges, I'm guessing getting rid of the hinges that came with the cabinet??
Hey thanks for the detailed info. Yes I was thinking of replacing my hinges but I will do a trial run on my old cabinet to see how well it works, but I think I will give the larger ones a try first though.
Nice haul, Looks very dank! Where did you pick up the hygrometers? I've toyed with buying some to for curing and was wondering if digital is better than a dial type? Thanks in advance.
Thank you. Curious on how much i pulled. I got the hygrometers from petsmart. They were in the reptile section. Personally, i feel the digitals are more accurate. i've done the salt test with these, and they were spot on. About 2% difference at most between any of them. I've used mechanical in the past for other hobbies and didnt feel they were too accurate at all. Would have huge differences between them when sitting next to each other. I have a mechanical hanging on the wall and it reads way different than these digis. So far, its taking all guess work out of the curing process. Wish i would have gone with them sooner lol.
Thank you budelight. I was going to go with calibers like in simons perfect cure thread, but thought i'd give these a try since i needed something at the last minute. Plus it was local so that made it easier to pick up. I have to admit, I'm pretty satisfied with them.
So to get things rolling, on Thursday, day 87 of 12/12, I've decided to chop the right side of the cabinet. 4 x 1gals and 2 x 5gals. They are slow drying at the moment in my 600w tent. The trichs are looking pretty good. I'm curious if this batch will be a little more potent. One thing I noticed with this harvest compared to the two I have curing are the trichs of this harvest are a LOT more plentiful. I guess I'll know after the cure...
The 4 jars I have curing at the moment appear to be stabilizing. They have been in jars for 19 days now. It has been over 2 days and the humidity has stayed between 60-62% in each jar. I'm going to let them sit for a few more days to verify their stability before I put them into long term storage. I have to say, for anyone wanting a simple, easy and super effective cure, check out Simons "A perfect cure" thread... These buds look, smell and feel better than anything I have grown and attempted to "cure" before. I've always wondered how the weed I bought had those awesome qualities and what I had to do to make mine the same. Well, I'm pretty positive this was the answer.
Now to the pictures.
Pic of the plants before I hung them up, the 2 on the left and the 2 on the right are the 1 gals and the two in the middle are the 5 gals.
Here they are hung to dry. Same scenario, the two on each side are the 1 gals and the 2 in the center are the 5 gals.
Pic from below.
A couple bud shots
I could have let them go longer, but I want to get some of these clones out from the mother chamber and put my mother plant back under full light. Overall, I feel they did great! The 5 gals really performed well so this next run, I'll be putting one 5 gal in each side and running a scrog. I feel when I can even out the canopy and use the stretch to fill the screen, I will end up with some great sized, dense flowers.
I'm thinking of running around an 18"x18" to 20"x20" screen. I'm going to have to play around with the different sizes and see what works best. Whatever I do, I'm going to make them the same size so I can run them in my 600w tents as well. I can fit 4 of those in each of my 600w tents with mod scrogs. My plans, for whenever I'm feeling froggy, is to setup my other two 600w tents and run 3 tents, each with a 600w with 4 x 5-10gal mod scrogs... Once all of the plants are done drying in my tent, I'll fire it back up and put 4 x 5gals in it. Someday, I'll get to that and start that thread.
For the time being, today, I'm going to dump all the used soil into my soil recycling containers and top off the two 5 gals with a fresh mix. In the future, I'm going to start re-amending and cutting my used and new soil together. I have read about quite a few people doing this with excellent results. I'm going to have to experiment with that at a later time though. After filling and planting the two 5 gals, they will go into the right side of the cabinet until I have harvested the 12 x 1 gals I have in the left side. Once those 12 are harvested, I'll separate the two 5 gals and give them each their own 150w light. Then, we'll continue to let the magic happen. Thank you for watching.
#1cheesebuds, thank you for the compliment! I still have some dialing in to do, mainly canopy management, but soon, I'll have this cabinet pumping out the ganja!!
It will be a bit before I get final numbers. I want to cure them for a little bit to get a more accurate reading. I've disciplined myself well to wait to try until they've been cured. The wife on the other hand, I'll have to keep an eye on and make sure she isn't pinching any before they're ready. If I had to guess, I've given her close to a quarter already to hold her over so we'll see how that goes.
So today, I managed to empty and clean out the containers from this latest harvest. The root balls in the 5 gal containers looked great. The 1 gals, were alright. Then again, the 5 gals had quite a bit of veg time while the 1 gals went straight to flower. Maybe that had something to do with it, I don't know.
I was able to refill the 2 x 5 gals and I selected 2 lucky clones to run this round in the cab. They've been transplanted into the containers, the reservoir's filled, the cab cleaned and are in place and ready to rock.
Here are the two lucky clones
Clone 1
Clone 2
Light in position and ready to start day 1 of their journey.
And a shot of the clones waiting to fill my 600w tent. The one in front in its on container, is the bushiest of them all so I'm thinking about turning it into another mother plant. Just something else to play around with.
The two clones in the 5 gals are branching nicely. They have been pruned quite a bit to keep them away from the light in the mother cab. I can really tell they are wanting some food so the 5 gallons of mix should keep each of them happy until harvest. I had the trim from my 600w harvest sitting in a container waiting to be fed to the worms. Instead, I decided to use them as mulch. After I trim my latest harvest, I think I'll add more to thicken it up some. I haven't ran with a mulch before, so we'll see how it goes.
Next on my to do will be to build the scrog screens. I'm thinking I'll make it 8-10" above the soil with 3-3.5" squares. I'm pretty excited for this run. This will be the first time I've run a scrog and I have a STRONG feeling it is going to go VERY well. Now I wait and let the magic happen.
Thank you Chiefbig. I'm excited to try them all once I've allowed them to cure a bit. It should be a GREAT way to break the extended cannabis free break I've been on.
Update for today, the harvest from last week has dried for 7 days in the 600w tent with the fan as low as it can go. It was then trimmed and jarred thanks to the wifey. She spent last night doing that all for me. Here are a few pics of it. Filled 3 x 1/2gal mason jars and 1 x quart mason jar. Decent little harvest for the two of us.
First pic is of both harvest in jars. The most recent are the 4 jars on the right. The four on the left are from earlier in the thread.
The most recent harvest. Cut at 87 days 12/12
Our harvest from a few weeks ago. Cut at 101 days 12/12
As you can see, the humidity in the new harvest, 4 on the right are getting close to the cure zone. Going to be keeping a VERY close eye on them these next few days. The 4 on the left have been stabilized where I'd like them for a bit now. 61-62%
