Cloning in straight Coco?

1.
prep mum... this mean selecting best branch, from best plant.
very important. this is genetic legacy. select only most vigorous branches/shoots, to continue line.
different parts of the same plant may grow differently.
if take 4 cuts from same plant & keep alive for, say, 1 yr, may view different growth patterns from those 4 cuts - taken from same mum...
maybe, genetic drift... maybe some branches just express dominance of genotype, while other branches express recessive traits..
either/or, found that selection of cuts that carry desirable traits, critical...

2.
6" (15cm) shoot/branch, w/ minimum 2 inter-nodes that will go beneath surface.
though, cut may only be 2" long... practice w/ different parts of the plant... lower branches (most juvenile/youngest) seem to be less woodier & able to grow roots faster...

3.
clean, sharp tools. clean, single cuts... less damage to cut, or mum.
after cutting mum, spray wound area w/ h202, to prevent any infections of mum.
re-spray next day...

4.
coco/perlite 50/50... or... as thread title state, 100% coco...media drenched w/ water, then weak fert solution... gh florilicious bloom/gh bioroots 1-1-1 work well...

5.
cut removed from mum by 1 cut... once removed, bottom 1" (2.5cm) of outer layer of tissue is removed, leaving cambium layer... as pointed out, here:

Found that removeing a complete circle of the outer stem is the main factor in reliably air layering canna and tomatoes quickly , over 100 now with just a handfull of losses and one which produced shoots for some reason.
e304b34effb5b24b9e1b97eddf973ab5_186272.jpg
unlike that pic, which makes the circle in the ~middle of the stem, while on the plant, when cutting from the plant, the bottom 1" of outer-skin (tissue) is removed.

the roots form & protrude out from the area exactly where the cut is made on the stem... @ meeting of the exposed cambium layer & the un-removed skin of the remainder of the stem...

6.
place cut into container w/ 100% coco, or 50% coco/50% perlite... w/ @ least the skinned portion of the lower stem in the media.

gh bioroots/floralicious bloom, both 1-1-1, work well, from day 1 - when roots come thru 6" container.
equal volume of water as media saturates media, before plant goes in, to soak & get wet... then they get fed ^ nutes @ 1/2 tsp/1 liter spray bottle.

7.
no humidity domes, no daily misting, no rooting hormones/powders, etc...
watered w/ diluted florilicious b, or bio roots, @ >500ppm/ph 5.0-5.5...
roots should show thru 6" container in 14-21 days. depends on cultivar...

8.
additional selection...
if take 4 cuts, the 2 that show roots 1st... the 2 that show new growth 1st... the 2 that burn/yellow/get bacterial attack, etc get culled, even if fully rooted & can survive...

this is artificial selection for strongest genotypical expression, observed in varyin branches.
can get 100% success, but prefer 50% of strongest to continue lines...

hope this helps.

enjoy your garden!

I grow in coco/charcoal 60/40 and thats what I clone in
no transplanting take cutting dip in rooting gel than into
the pot it'll spend its life in works for me

I've cloned in straight coco and liked it. I tend to do bigger clones in straight coco where as I tend to do smaller clones in jiffy pellets.

I'd like to try out Head's method of cloning which is using a styrofoam egg carton and filling each egg holder with coco and poking a couple small holes into each holder to facilitate drainage. This is similar to jiffy pucks.

I'd like to learn more about raising small cuttings as I've only done larger cuttings.

I'm wondering about the scarification/removal of plant integument. Would fine nicks suffice?

Feel very confident about coco cloning after reading this.

Anyone do it or is it all Jiffy Plugs and Rapid Rooters for you guys?

Putting together a sticky of clone techniques and want to cover as many basic methods as possible.

Thanks

Yes, we have cloned in plain 2nd hand coco a few times. Normally though we throw in a hand full of compost or wormcast ,,so that beneficial bacteria can get to work on the root nodes.

I did a lot of clone testing over the last few months, and ended up with:

Place clones dipped in olivia's cloning gel in rapid rooters, presoaked with b1. Place rapid rooters in rr tray(deep cone-shaped cells), with enough water on bottom to soak rr's 1/8". Place tray on heated seed mat, and cover with dome. I place this all on the floor, to keep temps lower, more consistent. Room temp is always 75-80deg.

I am now achieving first roots in 6-7 days, full rooting within 10, and 100% effectiveness. I am working with 6 new strains, however, so we'll see if that efficiency holds up.

So: cloninggel, rapidrooter/tray, 1/8" water on bottom, heating mat, dome, 75deg temp.

I am officially a badass. I have made clones with no rooting hormone.

I took my cuts with scissors, put them in solo cups with dry 50/50 coco/perlite, and NO ROOTING HORMONES. Then I water then with water straight out of the tap, and put them in my clone tub (it's a rubbermade w/ panda plastic, 2 flouros, and 2 computer fans. Once they dried out, I watered them with pH 6.0 water.

This has not worked 100%, I did lose a few cuts, but not many. With Clonex I don't lose any. Just wanted to share. It's about your technique I suppose. :D

A friend of mine uses honey instead of Clonex. She swears by it and I have seen the results. Quite impressive, it works.

i do it .... coco/beer cups/cfl... 100%, i'm never in a hurry for roots, it's not fast.

simple, easy, no trays, no domes, no gadgets...

took these 1 week ago, just plonked them in little coco pots with some formulex
scared the bottom of the clones and thats it,i had roots show yesterdy so that would be
6 days the first roots showed.

Straight coco here in beer cups. A warm (80-85F) room with humidity around 60-65% and couldn't be easier.

same here mate i use nothing eccept formulex,i would say this is the easiest part of all the stages in my grow.
rockwool is a bit prone to be too dry or too wet,i still use rockwool
for seeds as im still a bit iffy incase there is something in the
coco to affect seeds but i will try soon.

I've cloned + sprouted seeds in straight coco with EXCELLENT results.

I use clear plastic cups and I make sure there's no standing water on the bottom (ALWAYS leads to damping off otherwise.)
