Cloning in straight Coco?

Strangely

Feel very confident about coco cloning after reading this.

same here, as a novice I think I'll go straight to coco for clones having read all the info here (cheers everyone!). How many others do as Mr Mustard and pop their seeds in it too?

I'm a noob and tried to clone in straight coco and only had 7 out of 54 survive. I really don't want to use any other mediums, but with that success rate I'm going with "the world class cloner" with vermiculite this weekend.

D2G I wouldn't worry about that... my first cloning attempts netted me a five percent success rate... that was with vermiculite and perlite and a rooting hormone.

As time passes and experience is gained you'll develop a skill for the nuances involved in cloning (sometimes it's a simple issue of light intensity).

Don't blame the coco... but do try other things.

i do it .... coco/beer cups/cfl... 100%, i'm never in a hurry for roots, it's not fast.

simple, easy, no trays, no domes, no gadgets...

:watchplant:

I use a warming mat, straight coco, and clonex gel and solution

I go from cut to planting in less than 10 days on 90% of the strains I grow.

it's fast enough for me.

was waiting for someone to mention light intensity, absolutely makes a difference and no one ever mentions this aspect

Quick Question, one of my girls is running out of room and I don't have any space in the flowers either right now. If I take cuttings from the top shoots, that are almost touching the lights, will that effect her in a negative way? Will they grow back? I'm guessing its sort of like topping.

Unless you're going to need more cuttings within the next week or so, give her a good haircut. Growth will continue at the next node down from where you cut after a short recovery period (1-3 days). Surely you've noticed how she's come back from the last cuttings you've taken?

Light intensity- Here's what works for me. I use a 2' T-5 over a standard 11x22 tray. The light is more than a foot above the plant tops. I use a tall dome, and put 1 layer of white paper towel on top of the dome. I've gotten 100% on 2 batches totally over 40 cuttings in straight coco using heat mat with thermostat. Good luck. -granger

My coco coir (Roots Organic) already has perlite mixed so I clone straight to the pots the clones will grow in, mist the leaves, cover with saran wrap and put them under low lights. It takes about a week for the clones to root when I can remove the saran and just keep them misted for another week or so. Hope this helps.

Hey guy's!!,
I'm new to the coco scene. I actually just picked up my first bag. I bought Roots Organic Coco Fiber Hydroponic Soiless Media, it says on the bag. Is this the stuff you mean by straight coco? Can I use it? I recently moved, and my success rate with Rapid Rooters has gone down and I need some help. Thanks!

Bobbo,
The stuff you bought isn't "straight coco" but its excellent. It's a quality coco medium. It's coco with additives and should work well for you. Good luck. -granger

...high man, Granger is right, that Roots Organics isn't straight coco, it's a blended growing mix with much organic matter for plants to feed on as well as several species of beneficial fungi so while it is really good stuff, i wouldn't use it for cloning.

...what you want is a 5kg bale and the store you bought the Roots Organics will either always have it on hand already or they will order it for you, no big whoop.

...when you get the coco brick post up a question in the hempy thread and one of us will explain how to prep it for use (very simple prep).

Peace, SOG

straight coco is not so fast but it's pretty bomb proof, like this last December, when the power was off for 2 days, i just said f it and left my clones in the dark in temps around 38 degrees, and only had a couple croak. and in the summer when i wanna go camping i can water once every week to 10 days, i need more beer and return to my garden by then anyway...just another reason the coco is the shit.

SOG-How big is a 5kg bale, do I need that much, lol? Maybe I'll just ask the guy at the shop for some straight coco. After the clone is started in the plastic solo cup, can I transplant it into the Roots I have?
Could someone go over how to grow with coco, lol? Is there a thread somewhere? I'm not sure if I know how it works, do I do straight nutes throughout? Would you say you get more yield from coco? Do I need special nutrients, what is a good nutrient line? Sorry bout all the newbie questions, coco is new to me... Thanks for the help!!
