Hi whiterabbit

Yes, I advise you find a small stone from the garden or something. If you can find something that is vaguely conical that will fit your chillum tightly all the better. May take you a while to find a something that's a good fit but, hey!, costs nothing...

... or go to a headshop and ask if they have stones (a few online retailers sell them separate to chillums)

...or go to a local make your own jewellery/bead shop and dig around, you might find something suitable

... whoever sold you this chillum should send you some free stones though.

If you want to make your own stone, you should be able to fashion something suitable out of a piece of soapstone

LOL, that is pretty funny. Indians will not hesitate to get one off the ground. Pick carefully and it'll work fine.

yah I took an old rock I was holding (for luck) that was sitting on my window sil

the thing is.. I put the chillum on the table at some point, (before even trying it out)

and it rolled on the floor and broke in half (guh)

I put crazy glue and tape lol..

wanted to smoke the chillum during the holidays ya know

Hey guys

All this talk of refiring scares me! Theres no fucking way i would refire my Jungle chillum (clay by Renzo)!

There is a far better tek to clean a chillum and that is to boil the stone and chillum for 1 hour or so in cows milk. Just put in a pan and cover with milk and boil.

Ta da. A lovely clean chillum with no risk of breaking. The fats in the milk disolve the tars and oil so no dirty smell either.

Will post some pics of my chillum soon not got my camera here.

Cheers

Thanks...had forgotten the milk boiling trick... it does work well with well-fired clay chillums and, yes, it's a sound, low(er) risk way of cleaning a pipe.

Look forward to seeing your photos, sounds like you have a nice piece...

Antique Chillums online

Antique Chillums online

Hi all

you'll have seen that I have a few "antique" chillums in my collection and I have a quiet enthusiasm for collecting old and antique dope related objects.

... I have to post you all some shots of some pieces that I have bought recently but thought I'd put up some shots to illustrate "a debate" in chillums

There's probably not much debate that the best (best tasting, coolest smoke, easiest to clean) chillums for smoking are the high-end, hard-fired, "european" chillums by artists like Manu and Alvermann. Kind of like roor for bongs (er.. you can debate that elsewhere), you can approximate a very good chillum with something less expensive but the real deal chillums come a few notches higher. Probably...

One thing to put into the mix (not that mix!) though is the old chestnut "how authentic is this chillum?"

.. clearly, if you are a purist, glass, for example, cannot be "authentic" in chillum terms (can be a good smoke but that's a different question)...

... so what is an "authentic chillum"?

The issue is that the shape preferred by modern chillum makers and artists is a relatively straight pipe. Trouble is, if you look around, either at pipes favoured by bhangis and sadhus in India... or if you look at the designs of antique chillums, they look quite different.

The key difference is that old chillums tend to have a flared bowl. Here's an example...

The clay example here (on sale currently on ebay) is very short for this style and looks a bit like a bowl for a water pipe

... it's not though! Most chillums you find indians (not those mixing with western smokers I mean ordinary indians) smoking are shaped similarly - short, flared clay pipes.

Almost all the antique chillums I have found, especially in clay, follow this same flared morphology.

It's also far from true to say that all "authentic" chillums are made of clay. Now, of course, old clay chillums (even some new ones, eh, whiterabbit?) tend to break so the "archeological record" (lol) is biased towards chillums made from other materials, as they are more likely to survive. However, a very high proportion of the old chillums I have found are made from metal. Like this one

And any chillums I have come across in Temples (or that friends have come across in temples) have been metal. Now I have to say right here that if they are made of metal, they are unlikely to taste as good to the smoker (unless they were made of gold or something similarly without taint) but the fact is, a ceremonial temple chillum is likely to be made from metal. So - QED - non-clay chillums can be authentic.

If anyone owns any old/antiqiue chillums, I 'd be really interested to see your photos

And if you're interested in buying any, ebay is quite a good place to look

I thought I would post this. This is an old (I guess) clay chillum that was on ebay (maybe one of you bought it as it has sold! - wasn't me for once).. I rather like this one...

Funky tribal design but looks to be an eminently practical smoking chillum too. Nice

the thing in the middle is a cone made of newspaper and saliva. i used it to get the right shape, and im gonna leave it in when i fire it so the inside gets a nice ash glaze. not sure what im gonna do with the outside.

i also made a bowl for my buddy's bday the other day
