I believe you m8!:santa1:

I have couple chillums in attic that are excatly like yours!
I have the one made of soapstone with ganja leaf and the pushkar one. I haven't smoke those in 15 years, so they can stay in attic. ;)

I don't wan't to post picture of the one I'm smoking because it's unique and could be connected to me. It's not a too fancy anyways.
...Well, I could post pic of the inside! This is how chillum should look, when you look in (IMNSHO):

Cheers, Kaneh

does look like a lovely bore that. Fits all the requirements I put in my chillum buying guide to a T. Am sure it's lovely to smoke too. Wishing you happy toking...

is it just me or that mix has a lot of tobacco ?

Indeed, and looks like the tobacco was not toasted as well. Best way for a lung-killing chillum !

Next up...!

Limey's "modern" chillum. Perhaps not the best name as it's not mine (a mate left it round my house) and perhaps I should call it "Animal print" or something.

Anyway, it is a clay chillum, again of the 5inch size. It has been glazed, hence the funny pattern on it. Nicely made piece but I am not sure how it will stand up to re-firing, what with the glaze.

hey i would just like to say thank you for starting this thread very well done. you have a pretty good collection of chillums but this one above i think you maybe incorrect on. I think it is actually a stone chillum. I have the exact same one and mine is tiger stone. i will post up a pic when i can but, i purchased mine in Jaipur, India. Now i would just like to say that yours might be clay but no joke mine looks exactly the same. Oh and on a side note i had the pleasure of smoking with a sadhu while i was there and he shared his technique with me and i showed hime how to roll up a doobie and smoke that like a chillum, he loved it but did not speak a lick of english. good thing i speak a little hindi,my dad covered the rest. Yes my paps was with me.

P.s. yes this is my first post ever i figured it was the best place to start. once again this is a great thread and extremely informative, thank you.

Hey nice thread! I love chillums, right up there with a gravity bong or a steamroller to give the thicks hits.
.
I just wanted to make a couple of comments.... I lived in India for a while and smoked out of lots of chillums, so,

lighting material- a type of twine (jute?) if in the city is used, and a piece of coco husk in used in rural areas. Tie it in a knot about the size of the diameter of the top of the chillum, light it on fire, burn and blow on it til it is all red cherry, quickly pick it up and smoosh it into the top of the chillum.... next some more flame and someone quickly puffs about half a dozen times til chillum is lit well, then it is passed around.

To prep fresh ganja: they break it up with their fingers, then add a drop of water then take a blade to it on a table/piece of wood, and slice it many times with blade until it is pulverized. Add unpulverized tabacco and loosely pack it up.

Note- this method works best with the addition of tobacco as an accelerant.

edit: common type of chillum in India costs 1 ($.02) rupee and is disposable clay.

Hey, movado!

thanks for that info about lighting chillums. Very interesting - more evidence of the nonsense of the 2 match theory!

Hi Strand

many, many thanks for posting those shots. Those are really lovely pieces. I especially like the longest, thinnest chillums - always a shape that delivers and excellent smoke

many thanks again!

Small chillums can be practical if you are on the road or something but essentially I wouldn't recommend them for smoking (I have a few for the sake of my collection but that's a different matter ; have a look at my earlier posts)...

... basically, they are not so nice to smoke as they tend to smoke quite "hot".

...it is much better to buy a bigger chillum (at least 15cm IMO) and buy a selection of chillum stones that enable you to vary the size of the bowl in the chillum so, if you want a small chillum instead buy a stone that leaves you with a small bowl. Slightly "finger in the air" judgement here but I would estimate that you want a bowl about 15-20mm deep for 1-2 people and add 10mm for each person in the circle... does depend on the diameter of the bowl of course

... I don't understand the physics of it but it is much better to have a chillum bowl full to the brim when you light it... it does seem to light and burn better and be easier to smoke this way. If the bowl is only half-full it doesn't light or smoke as well.

hope that helps

So I just recieved my stone chillum...

the thing is...

there is no stone

there is a hole of about .7cm

is there something I can put in there to block it or ? is there a customary way to smoke this kind of chillum ?

I just sent message to the store.

i'm really surprised (to say the least) about it
