The wonderful means of truly putting an end to the physical and spiritual obstacles of all living beings is none other than Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

Buddhist compassion: Removing Suffering and Giving Joy

Buddhist compassion: Removing Suffering and Giving Joy

The Daishonin Took the Sufferings of All Living Beings As His Own

There is a “self-centered” part of us that is constantly functioning-thinking first of ourselves, and then of others only when necessary.

This is not necessarily a bad thing; it’s an important part of being alive. When self-interest becomes the dominant force in our lives, however, it can cause us to act insensitively and even harmfully toward others. It has the potential to make us selfish and, if unchecked, even criminal.

On the one had there are times, especially in emergencies, when failure to look out for ourselves may have catastrophic results. While we all have to solve our own problems, there are some problems that we cannot solve alone. We must rely on the help of others.

On the other hand there are times when, by extending a hand to others, we can help them in ways that they may not be able to help themselves. What is needed in such situations is compassion.

In Chinese and Japanese Buddhist texts, including Nichiren Daishonin’s writings, the word for compassion comprises two Chinese characters. It is pronounced ci bei in Chinese and jihi in Japanese. The first character, ci or ji, is a translation of the Sanskrit work maitri, meaning “to give happiness.” The second, bei or hi, comes from the Sanskrit karuna, meaning “to remove suffering.” Taken together they describe the function of relieving living beings of suffering and giving them happiness.

Almost anyone can feel kindness toward someone who shows them kindness. It is the spirit of Buddhism to develop a sense of compassion toward all people--toward any person. It is in this spirit that Nichiren Daishonin wrote: “The various sufferings experienced by all livings beings are without exception Nichiren’s own sufferings” (GZ 758).

The Behavior of a Bodhisattva

The compassion of Buddhist enlightenment--the desire to “remove suffering and give happiness”--is expressed in the human behavior of a Buddha or bodhisattva. Nichiren Daishonin also writes, “Even a heartless villain loves his wife and children. He too has a portion of the bodhisattva world within him.” (WND, 358).

This statement makes it clear that anyone and everyone possesses the potential of a bodhisattva--the potential to behave with compassion toward another person. Yet, it is an ordinary human tendency to place concern for ourselves first and foremost. This may be the strongest human impulse. Furthermore, there long have been those who hold the view that compassion is a sign of weakness; that generosity only spoils the receiver of kindness.

There may be a grain of truth to his assertion. Kindness that does not empower the receiver creates little lasting value. From the Buddhist view, true compassion is that which has the power to root out the cause of misery in people's lives and direct them to the cause of happiness. Such compassion by its very nature requires courage and strength.

How then can ordinary people, who are governed by the impulse for self-interest, express compassion in a constructive and meaningful way?

A natural example is the actions of a mother toward her child. A mother will do anything she can to protect her child, even if it means braving flames or flood.

The Kindness of a Parent

Nichiren Daishonin wrote, “I, Nichiren Daishonin, am sovereign, teacher, and father and mother to all the people of Japan” (WND, 287). He made this statement to convey his state of life as the original Buddha--a state of life capable of embracing all people with the compassion of a parent toward his or her children.

Now this is not an easy thing. We sometimes even lose patience with our own children, let alone strangers. Since that is the case, most of us without assistance tend to be lacking in the quality defined as Buddhist compassion.

What can we do about it? Well, to state the conclusion first, we can expose our hearts and minds to the very state of compassion manifested by the Buddha. When we believe in and chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to the Gohonzon, which embodies the compassionate state of life of the original Buddha, we stimulate and bring forth a source of boundless compassion latent within us.

Taking a lesson form the Daishonin’s writings, it is also useful to apply the model of a parent--or teacher--in developing compassion for others.

Any successful parent or teacher knows the importance of seeing things from the child’s perspective. The exert themselves in caring for and educating their children, wanting to see them grow and develop their humanity.

Such people transcend divisions of self and other to view the sufferings and joys of their children or students as their own. Constant is their concern for the children. Always thinking of them, they are eager to offer help. Protection, and an opportunity to learn. This sort of concern will certainly reach the hearts of others, be they children or adults. The Nobel-prize winning French author André Gide (1869-1951) put it clearly: “True kindness presupposes the faculty of imagining as one’s own the suffering and joys of others” (Pretexts, “Portraits and Aphorisms” [1903]).

Compassion also includes the ability to recognize in others strengths and capacities that we ourselves may be lacking, and our wish to learn from those qualities. While it is easy to identify another’s weak points, it is harder than we may think to clearly recognize and appreciate the person’s strong points. If we focus on the strong points, however, we will naturally come to appreciate, fell close to, and even develop a fondness for him or her. As a result, we may find ourselves thinking of that person more often and feeling concerned about his or her well-being.

We practice Buddhism for our own happiness and that of others. These two aims of faith cannot be separated. When our thoughts for others’ well-being become part of our daily prayer, we transcend the innate impulse to be concerned only with ourselves, and illuminate the fundamental ignorance that is the source of suffering with the light of our innate Buddhahood.

The Business of Peace

The Business of Peace

By Jane Nelson

During the past decade the forces of political transformation and economic globalization have created a world of new opportunities and hope for some, but increased instability and insecurity for others. Now in the 21st century, violent conflict continues to affect the lives of millions of people, undermining human progress and economic development. This has important implications for business. From Azerbaijan to Zimbabwe, the potential and reality of violent conflict has become an unavoidable business issue.

As of 2000, there were 72 countries where security risk for foreign businesses was rated medium, high or extreme. Moreover, today, only about 4 percent of the world's GNP is military-related; 96 percent of the international business community provides civilian products and services. Most of these business sectors have a vested interest in stability and peace.

Business--ranging from large multinationals to informal micro-enterprises--has a vital role to play in creating wealth and promoting social and economic development. It also has a role in contributing both directly and indirectly to the prevention and resolution of violent conflict.

The reality is, however, that some companies are currently identified as direct causes of violent conflict or as being complicit in sustaining it in the countries in which they operate. This is often a result of unintended consequences arising from a company's operations or those of its business partners or the result of bad management, lack of awareness or inadequate policies and operating controls within the company itself.

There are three basic strategies that companies can adopt in managing their impact on society. They are applicable for companies operating in any industry sector, country or community, but have particular relevance in conflict-sensitive situations. At a very minimum a company should aim to be compliant with national regulations and, where applicable, international laws and standards. It should aim beyond compliance, however, to minimize risks and harm from its operations.

Strategies for Responsibility

Beyond compliance and doing minimal harm, companies can proactively create positive societal value by optimizing the external multipliers of their own business operations and engaging in innovative social investment, stakeholder consultation, policy dialogue, advocacy and civic institution-building, including collective action with other companies.

In practical terms, specific management challenges which companies operating in conflict situations often face may include deciding to invest or disinvest in countries with repressive or corrupt regimes, and finding ways to operate in accordance with international standards and encourage better governance if they do invest. They need to find out whether their investments and operations are actually helping fund or sustain a war economy, to find ways to influence the distribution of costs and benefits from their activities so that they do not increase inequality and instability, and to ensure their employees' security without compromising that of surrounding communities.

Human ingenuity creates business opportunities even in the midst of destruction; Afghan children help make satellite dishes [AFP]

They can also consider how to contribute to humanitarian relief operations and investigate whether it is possible to play a careful role in peacemaking and rebuilding trust.

More generally, collective action by businesses can be especially valuable in addressing politically sensitive issues, such as corruption and human rights abuses. Linked to this, new types of cross-sector partnerships between business, government and civil society can be valuable mechanisms for addressing some of the complex, resource-intensive issues associated with conflict prevention. The National Business Initiative in South Africa, Philippines Business for Social Progress and the Confederation of British Industry in Northern Ireland are examples of "business in society" coalitions that have engaged explicitly in peace-building and conflict resolution activities.

Vulnerability

In the context of economic globalization, many communities feel vulnerable to massive changes beyond their control and at risk of being further marginalized. As employers of people from different ethnic and religious groups, as marketers to customers of different ethnicities and as members of multiethnic communities, companies can serve an important function in either exacerbating identity-based tensions or helping reduce them by encouraging ethnic diversity and tolerance.

In the Chiapas conflict in Mexico, for example, economic globalization and the threat that it poses to local identities and economic survival has resulted in the largely indigenous population of Chiapas supporting the local Zapatista Liberation Army. As an example of a creative approach to using market forces to ease the conflict in the region, the Azteca Trading Company produces a line of salsas and exotic spreads made from raw materials sourced from indigenous farming cooperatives, which include seven previously rival tribes in the war-torn area. Collaboration has flourished in what would have otherwise remained a divided and adversarial climate.

Tzetzal women in the Chiapas region listen to a political candidate; while political processes tend to widen divisions, business initiatives can bring people together [AFP]

There is a growing and unavoidable business case for companies to analyze and take action in their capacity to prevent and resolve conflict. Apart from the direct, "on-the-ground" costs of being involved in violent conflict, companies face growing international legal and reputation costs of being seen to be complicit in conflict situations and human rights violations. Most companies and industries do better in peaceful and stable societies and thus have a commercial interest, as well as a moral imperative, to help build such societies and to create value by taking proactive measures.

Ultimately the challenge is about values-based leadership at every level of the company and at every level of society. The question of whether a company contributes to conflict or helps prevent it depends on the values, policies and operating guidelines of the company and the way its employees and business partners accept, interpret and implement these. The same can be said for society at large. Developing future leaders capable of building peace and prosperity in a complex world is probably the single greatest challenge we face in the 21st century. It is a challenge that government, civil society and business must address, both individually and in partnership.

PeaceWorks

PeaceWorks is an example of a U.S. corporation whose goals are to maximize economic returns while promoting cooperation in regions of conflict around the world. It does this through establishing joint business ventures among people of different, often conflicting backgrounds, under conditions where such a union would normally be impossible. From such ventures the company sources gourmet food products and other high-quality goods for retail to consumers in the United States.

Since its establishment in 1994, the company has developed international distribution networks across eight food sectors, working with over 50 distributors and reaching over 5,000 food outlets.

PeaceWorks's theory of fostering business collaboration between former adversaries and people of different backgrounds operates on multiple levels: at a personal level, as people interact on a daily basis; at the business level--as companies operate and profit together, they will gain a vested interest in preserving and cementing these prosperous relationships; and as the region develops economically, people and governments will be encouraged to continue their efforts toward coexistence.

Daniel Lubetzky, the founder and president of PeaceWorks, sums up his business as follows: "If enough people have an economic stake in cooperation and there are enough examples of such ventures, then a critical mass will be reached that can be the guardian of peace."

I know of at least one person for sure who has been reading this thread, was open enough to actually CHANT (outloud!), and has seen a result. While they cannot yet attribute what they are experiencing specifically to chanting, they "sure as hell aren't going to stop" to see if it isn't! And for the rest of my bud loving friends in this community, they had the benefit of having a half ounce sent to them out of nowhere from a total stranger!

(Just as good as winning the seed lottery in my opinion)

Is anyone out there reading this thread trying chanting and NOT seeing any difference? If so, let us know!

VB has discussed 'expedient means', but please understand that the reason you can chant for anything, is that while you could not possibly pray to attain enlightenment with the conviction that you can do it, for the length of time it would probably take to attain it, it is quite simple to be that focussed on the problems or desires that we have in our daily lives.

When ever you say Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, you are doing what you are saying. You may be chanting for whatever it is that is perceptable and tangible to you, but simultaneously you are actually also making the request to attain enlightenment in your present form (this lifetime). The Universe cares less about the power of your Buddha Nature giving you material things, but if that is the way to help nuture your desire to manifest your Buddha Nature, so be it.

The more you chant, the more your inner wisdom is developed and your thinking and values change naturally from within, not from someone telling you what they should be. If a philosophy is truly correct, I think that the way it should be.

Lets Continue Forward and accomplish more goals we set forth for ourselves this year as we approach the years end. Going Forward into the NEXT year lets rev up our determinations and continue building faith chanting as we prepare to embark on another year dedicated to kosen-rufu and also for myself, more personal growth and increased happiness. As my Lifecondition continues to stay in the higher worlds and as I try to be a better Bodhisattva of the Earth Everyday, my effectiveness spreading the 5 chracters of Myoho-renge-kyo brings me and my environment incredible good fortune.

I'm just a humble grower outhere in anytown, usa But with my Heart of Gold I am being the change I want to see in the world!

much love,

"First Soka Gakkai president Tsunesaburo Makiguchi remarked:

"The life-force of each and every one of us without exception is a manifestation of the great life-force of the universe. Accordingly, the great Law that is the fountainhead of the life-force of all universal phenomena, which manifest as agents of that life-force-- including human beings, which do the same--is the Mystic Law and, as such, is the essence and the substance encompassing all principles governing life.

"When we tap the great fundamental life-force of the universe that is inherent in our lives, we achieve a towering state of being in which we can manifest power as immense as the universe itself.

"This towering state of life is certainly not governed by a selfish impulse that seeks only personal happiness. Rather, it gives rise to a spirit of mutual support and encouragement directed toward everyone realizing their full potential, and toward drawing forth and harmonizing each person's individuality. To care for and encourage others is compassion--and compassion is a function that pervades the entire universe."

To "exert ourselves bravely and vigorously"*
is the very spirit of the SGI.
Courageously and with strong determination,
let's all stand up and initiate action!

Daisaku Ikeda

*Yumyo shojin (He has exerted himself bravely and vigorously) - "Expedient Means" chapter of the Lotus Sutra

In the first place, "bravely and vigorously" means with faith. In his "Six-volume Writings" (Rokkan Sho), the twenty-sixth high priest, Nichikan, citing the interpretation, "'Bravely' means to act with courage; 'vigorously' means to use every ounce of one's wisdom," explains that "bravely and vigorously" means to courageously exercise one's powers of faith to the fullest.

Buddhist practice has to be carried out with determination and courage. When we bravely challenge ourselves with the spirit to accomplish 'more today than yesterday' and 'more tomorrow than today,' we are truly practicing.Without such a brave and vigorous spirit, we cannot break the iron shackles of destiny, nor can we defeat obstacles and devils. Our daily practice of gongyo is a drama of challenging and creating something new in our lives. When we bravely stand up with faith, the darkness of despair and anxiety vanishes from our hearts, and in pours the light of hope and growth. This spirit to courageously stand up is the spirit of faith. ......

Let us remember that the SGI has greatly developed precisely because we have bravely and vigorously exerted ourselves in faith - that is, with true earnestness.

No worries tree, I made 2 runs of hash last night and finished about 5 hours after I said I'd brb, lol.

The hash wasn't the same white consistency as the fullmelt bubble I made from the plants with spots of PM (I think those bagseeds were c99 something, that hash was so good I gave most of it away! {Sharing is Caring, is what I believe}), but even still this new batch is awesome, the first run I did with just Buds and the second with the buds and the flarf (extra popcorn buds plus sugar leaf). The first one with buds is melty but not the clear domes I became used to, lol.

From chanting for bubblehash for months I ended up with about 4 grams of fullmelt and 5 grams of melty bubble plus some decent 45mu. Also I have about 3 ounces of excellent organic meds to get by with during the next 90ish days while we finish vegative growth and start this next run with 3 more banana buds and 2 of the c99ish (bagseed I think has c99 parent somewhere in there)awesome hash makers, ohh and the OG Kush from seed was great, funny thing is I never had the sfv Og Kush just read about it but I did toke the abusive cut OG Kush which is really great and dank. My lady and I are going GAGA over this OG Kush from seed that is like the abusive cut but has a noticeable lemony smoothness that the abusive cut does not have. The potency is very similar, to really know I would need to have like a blind taste test but I'm totally reveling in this huge benefit thanks to Gohonzon and my faith in Gohonzon.

Dude Tree, I'll see you in chat, get Gohonzon and take it all to the next level! Tell my brother scegy MyohoDisco sends his love.

Yeah, everyone BONZO rules, this guy is THE MYSTIC LAW IN ACTION. He has really accumulated so much as a result of his Faith, Study and Practice! ROck on BONZO! :lurk:

Over and over I recall the moment, unforgettable even now, when I was about to be beheaded and you accompanied me, holding the reins of my horse and weeping tears of grief. Nor could I ever forget it in any lifetime to come. If you should fall into hell for some grave offense, no matter how Shakyamuni might urge me to become a Buddha, I would refuse; I would rather go to hell with you. For if you and I should fall into hell together, we would find Shakyamuni Buddha and the Lotus Sutra there.
