Not to be an asshole or anything, but why is this in the "growers" forum and not in a forum like "toker's den"??

Ah well

Hello Ganico,

Good question and you aren't being an asshole. The main thing is that we are a 'chanting' growers forum; I guess we could be a toker's den 'chanting' forum too if there was one. The key is that we chant Nam Myoho Renge Kyo to bring forth the ultimate law of the universe from within our lives. Chanting does that; as those that do will experience absolute true happiness. Anyone is free to join and check it out. Therefore we are the 'Chanting Growers Group' here on ICMag; Growing good bud while growing our lives in a way unimaginable.

Tsunesaburo Makiguchi
Encountering his Mentor
Arriving in Tokyo from the northern Island of Hokkaido in his early twenties, Toda found a teaching post at the school where Tsunesaburo Makiguchi was principal. Impressed by Makiguchi's educational ideals, he soon became his protégé. In 1928 he followed Makiguchi in his decision to practice Nichiren Buddhism. The two later co-founded the Soka Kyoiku Gakkai, forerunner of the Soka Gakkai.

Thank you EasyDisco for that. We, (I) owe so much to these too Buddhas of the 20th century. I pray with sincere appreciation everyday.

PRACTICE IN ACCORD WITH THE LAW
Tuesday, November 28, 2006

Selection Source: President Ikeda's Lecture on The True Entity of
Life, Selected Lectures on the Gosho, Vol. 1, P. 72

A spaceship follows a fixed orbit when it goes to the moon. If it should veer from that orbit, it might never return to the earth. We, too, have an "orbit" of life in the universe. If we veer from our own orbit, we might end up wandering in utter darkness for aeons without end. It is a terrible feeling to sense defeat in the ups and downs of life. The Daishonin meant to say, "You may have doubts and questions about the Mystic Law, but now trust what I say and devote yourself entirely to the Lotus Sutra."

To "build your reputation as a votary of the Lotus Sutra" is to live up to kosen-rufu with pride and honor. It is of course very important for each of us to be respected and trusted in whatever work we do. But when seen from the deeper level of eternal life, your efforts for and contribution to the goal of kosen-rufu are vastly more important. That is the only honor whose glory will never fade.

To "devote yourself to the Lotus Sutra" means to make the Gohonzon the sole foundation of your life-the point to which you always return when you need courage and power. It means to keep up your daily practice of gongyo and activities for kosen-rufu to the best of your
ability. No other life is stronger or more meaningful than a life devoted to the Lotus Sutra. If we devote ourselves to the Gohonzon, the Lotus Sutra for this day and age, we are rooting our lives in the law and power of the cosmos.

The following part, "Shakyamuni Buddha and Taho Buddha...," explains why you have to "build your reputation as a votary of the Lotus Sutra and devote yourself to it." The ceremony and teaching of the Lotus Sutra was given for us, people of the Latter Day of the Law. The Buddhist philosophy exists entirely for our sake. If you do not realize that, Buddhism is just another powerless ideology.

RULE BY PERSONS OR RULE BY LAW...by Tsunesaburo Makiguchi,1930

from "Soka Kyoikugaku Taikei" (System of Value Creation Education)

"...It is written that Sakyamuni said "Heed the Law, not persons". This is the greatest guidance that buddhism has to offer to the advancement of humankind. here we are shown the way up from dependence to true freedom, from living in obedience to charismatic power figures to living in unison with the universal order. As we shall discuss later in more detail, to follow blindly the will of others or even of oneself is a form of personality worship. We are self-sold into bondage. And because such one-track beliefs are not based on reason, they are apt to be quite volatile and reactive. The most minor doctrinal or iconographic deviations may fuel sectarian disputes and religious intolerance.

Religions everywhere preach compassion, mercy and reciprocity with an intense fervor that almost inevitably leads to interfaith warfare, all because they get entrenched in personality worship. There is no chance to rise above the life of person dependence. Just like the lover who has no eyes for anyone but his love, the devotee of a personality cult has not the least inclination to assume an objective scientific stance to calmly compare the various religions, hail the greater similarities, and reject the trivial differences.

Gradually, though, as we move through the process of aquiring ever more knowledge, the subjective emotional elements give way to more rational considerations. We gain a certain distance from the charismatic figure as our conciousness of an underlying order grows more pronounced. The realization dawns that even that person we had so revered only shortly before is is but one ordinary human being. At that moment, like a sunrise outshining the stars that appeared to gleam so brightly, the focus of that conciousness driving our very being shifts from persons related to our own individual loss and gain to the natural order and social laws that work equally for all without favor or discrimination.

It is this awakening to conciousness of an underlying order and a commitment to rule by law rather than by persons that gives hope for the future....As the masses gain awareness of their alienation from the power that is rightfully theirs and realize the impotence of a divided, noncollective existence, they can unite to seek their mutual release from their former bondage...

We cannot afford to relegate the task of translating abstract truths into real-life values to religious sects that spend their time fighting and quarreling over which one has the most truth....If debates must ensue, they should be free of emotional arguments and serve to strengthen adherence to the principle "Heed the law, not persons". Only through such rational practices will science and religion, and by extension, religion and education advance together in unity."

Morning all! Just finished doing gongyo and chanting for my sisters strength because she is being spoken of badly by "friends" at the church she no longer attends and it really got to her last night and for my dad to break the bonds of his alcoholism(he got a dui a week ago =/ and lost his trucking license/job) I feel empowered and full of energy! ED I always enjoy your quotes, they help my knowledge of this wonderful thing I am apart of to grow, you are truely a Bodhisattva of the Earth. I have one question that probably has no answer but do we have ANY idea where this mystic law came from? How it came to be? Is there some entity behind it? What is it's purpose? Just something I was wondering this morning during my chanting, probably no answer that humans can comprehend just like "how did the universe come to be?" The reason I ask is because I believe in my flashbacks ego death, salvia trips I saw the mystic law in motion as a physical ever changing entity that shapes me and my surroundings, and when I tried to control it and manipulate it, it caused me great pain. Anywho just some thoughts I was having. Courage for all! Nam Myoho Renge Kyo

This is the answer, The Mystic Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is inherent in all life. When you mentioned where did it come from? How it came to be? I remember reading the Lotus Sutra (english translation by Burton Watson) and recall the Ceremony in the Air *When the this Huge Treasure Tower came out of the ground and it was totally jeweled to the max within were Shakymuni Budda and Many Treasures then we the Bodhisattvas of the Earth came out of the ground...*, we just studied this in the Buddhist review which took place last month but here is a link to a pdf version of the review which has many of the answers you seek outlined in an easy to read format you could even print for a handy reference (i printed out a few and handed them out).

http://www.sgi-usa-study.org/BLR_2006.pdf

SO the Lotus Sutra is very allegorical in the sense that I get my percise meanings, explinations, story behind the story, essentially I derive all my Buddhism through chanting and study of the Goshos or The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin. I am not downplaying the Lotus Sutra but merely indicating the magnitude of The Daishonin's words. WHEN you get your copy of the Goshos Leo, you will find letters, treastise, notes, question and answer format writings all by Nichiren and within every word are incredible gems (on the scale of Treasure Towers!) of Buddhawisdom.

My sincere suggestion is to brush up on the Study guide link and really get into the meat and potatoes of the study aspect of this practice. Only you will decide how much you will study but from one friend to another, give it a go, you have soo sooo soo much to gain.

Here is information on Shakymuni (PasstheDoobie posted a more indepth post of Shakymuni Buddha about a month and a half ago, I'm pretty sure)

Shakyamuni

Buddhism began with one person’s search for a solution to human suffering. Shakyamuni (Gautama Sidartha), known as the Buddha, or “awakened one,” lived around 2,500 years ago in India. He was born a prince and raised in luxury but became perplexed at a young age by the inevitable suffering that life entails (sufferings he summed up as birth into this troubled world, sickness, old age and death).

At around the age of nineteen he renounced his wealth and titles, determined to seek an answer to the problem of human suffering. After years of strenuous effort he experienced a profound enlightenment to the essential nature of reality, the cause of suffering and how to resolve it.

Buddhism in Action
Shakyamuni spent the rest of his life traveling throughout India to share with people the insight he had attained. His life was one of active compassion, very different from today’s usual image of the Buddha as an otherworldly, detached figure in an isolated realm of enlightenment.

Lotus Sutra
Shakyamuni’s teachings were later recorded in written collections called sutras. His key message, contained in the Lotus Sutra, is that Buddhahood -- a condition of absolute happiness, freedom from fear and from all illusions -- is inherent in all life. The development of this inner life state enables all people to overcome their problems and live a fulfilled and active life, fully engaged with others and with society. Almost two thousand years after Shakyamuni’s death, Nichiren, the thirteenth century Japanese monk, distilled the profound theory of the Lotus Sutra into a practice to enable anybody, within their own lifetime, to reveal their Buddhahood, or highest state of life, in the midst of day-to-day reality.

"The real meaning of Shakyamuni Buddha’s appearance in this world lay in his behavior as a human being."

- Nichiren, The Three Kinds

Thanks Ed, I will study as much as I can I just need to figure out how to retain. I like to read and I love to learn but I find it hard to remember what I just read, ya know? Also someone made a comment in another thread that had me doing a little research on sgi being a cult, I think it is far fetched and I feel I am getting involved in something that is going to better all of mankind but does sgi respond in more depth about it then I saw on the website or what is your take? Specifically the allegations on Ikeda's motives and character.

FROM THE SGI PRESIDENT
Wednesday, November 29, 2006

Selection Source: World Tribune, No. 101, March 9, 2001

In a discussion with Soka Gakkai junior high school division leaders, SGI President Ikeda says: "Anyone can be superficially friendly. First Soka Gakkai president Tsunesaburo Makiguchi used to say that there are three kinds of friendship: inferior, ordinary and superior. Inferior friendship refers to friendship that is based on money or
material gain. Ordinary friendship refers to casual relationships in which people get along well and help each other out -- for instance, recommending a friend for a job. But superior friendship, really caring for your friends, means you are concerned enough about their welfare to be willing to confront them about negative and destructive aspects of their lives and try to help them remove the causes for unhappiness they are making."
"I hope you will all form superior friendships -- friendships that transcend passing feelings of like and dislike. Superior friendship is wishing the best for your friends with all your heart and striving to grow and walk together with them on the path of justice and truth."
"Ultimately, the only friendships that last are those you have with people who are right for you. That is another way in which friends are like a mirror. There's an old saying, 'If you want to know a person's character, look at his friends.' "
"If you make friends with corrupt and malicious people, you will be dragged down with them."
