Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH)

But as Rives (or whoever it was that said it just prior) said, no way a couple of growers got together and commissioned a company like Philips or GE to make a specialty bulb unless they had like a 100K+ units made... Unless it's just some Chinese junk.

I hate to come off sounding like a shill but,
Cycloptics is in existence because of research institutes, universities and governmental agencies, and the horticulture research industry.

Think about this,
Their product is quite unique.
The science on their sites, is well....real science with all the correct measurements and documentation, a lot done by 3rd parties.
How can they charge the price they do for the Agro bulb?

A 1k CMH kinda scares me in my little grow, and the uniformity would not be nearly as good as the 2 315w systems that are running now.

here the spectra of the CDM allstar.

If i run the numbers between the specs of the known µmol measurements of the 315W 942 (550 µmol/s) µmol output & lumen output and compare it with the lumen output of the 860W it should do about 1400 µmol/s

They made a system to take advantage of the Philips bulbs... That's all. I'm not disputing their quality or science. Cycloptics Ballasts are made by GEL and I'm not paying a $1000 to Cycloptics for a 315w kit or $500 to GEL lol. DNA has no info on their site, which is strange for a company that makes their own light bulbs... err, right, they don't. They're just selling Philips goodies.

Basically what I'm trying to convey is that it's a Philips bulb with a GEL/Cycloptics/DNA ballast and reflector.

On the note of coverage/uniformity... I'm running 2 reflectors in my tent. 1 reflector has a 330w Philips CDM and the other reflector houses a 250w retro white & a 150w Philips CDM on the opposite end. That side of the tent looks brighter and lighting down the sides of the cola's is much more complete than the hood with the single 330W.

So ya, I would rather have 2x 315W Agro's than a single 860w. BUT, if you're doing a vertical grow, I think the 860w would be better.

I'm curious if the AN Baddass 1000w low freq ballast would run the 860W bulb or not. I don't know much about that ballast.

*** Funny... DNA is based out of Idaho, same as GEL. Who wants to bet it's the same people? lol

I don't think GEL is the manufacturer of the ballasts, i have one here and peeled off their product sticker and it looks like there has been another one below it before.

just have to find out where it came from..

lol, so the plot thickens. The rep at GEL told me to check out Cycloptics, that GEL supplies them with their ballasts. It's a pretty good bet that DNA is run by the same people as GEL... Seems like we got ourselves a conglomerate now lol.

I know that GEL gets their ballasts from China. No surprise, though. What doesn't come from China?

it says on the housing made in GERMANY....

Doesn't mean that's where they are actually made. Sounds better than China lol. How many places in Germany could make such an item? Probably a lot fewer than in China.

Is it possible to take the ballast apart? Like take the cover off w/o fucking your warranty? I'm curious if there are any clues inside. It's probably potted in epoxy anyway.

I asked him what you wrote and he said this... Is which part true, that gel, cycloptics, and dna are all one company?. answer no not even close.. gel is global energy and cycloptics buys their ballast which is an awesome commercial ballast. We make our own ballast for both 330 and 900 systems. These ballast like gavitas are specially made to optimize the performance and extend lumen, spextrum and life of these bulbs

hate to call people out. but this is completely inaccurate. Germany is the worlds second largest exporter, exporting 1.12 trillion in goods to Chinas 1.20 trillion. 93.3%. What Im about to say is my opinion. Their goods are usually a few years ahead of China's technologically and the quality is sometimes/often better. makes perfect sense the ballast comes from where it does.
Im hoping we can find the source of these 120v ballasts, as the price is still not justifiable for me. stay diligent my friends we will find~~~

Germany? Even better!

I would bet it is a rebranded ballast used for commercial (warehouse, roadway) lighting. Probably available fairly cheap too if the OEM can be found.

That's news to me. I do agree that it would more than likely be of better quality and build coming from Germany rather than China.

I guess the horticulture lighting industry is alive and strong in Idaho then? The reason I think it's the same company is because GEL is out of Idaho, too... Just because he denies it doesn't mean he isn't lying. Doesn't mean I'm not wrong, either... Just my suspicions. There is a LOT of money to made in this industry, especially if they're buying these ballasts super cheap through OEM channels. Also, if they're having them even remotely custom made they would have to be ordered in a large volume, so it makes sense that several "companies" would be involved.

I've never heard of companies like this coming out of Idaho before and now all of a sudden 2... And they're selling the same line of bulbs? Mmmm, smells to me.

Funny thing about GEL is they have these different contacts for California, New York, Florida... and Dubai lol. I was only able to get a hold of someone at the Cali # and then got the cell # of a rep in IDAHO. My GEL package came from Idaho and when I returned it it went back to Idaho. Maybe DNA is some guys that used to work at GEL and they started their own gig?

Could just be my mindless bullshit ranting or I could be even some what right. I'm going to keep searching out an oem ballast supplier, though.
