Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH)

Does anyone know why a 400W Philips Mastercolor CMH would "red-shift"? Sometimes I'm sitting there looking at the plants and the light goes orange-red like an HPS. Just briefly, and then returns to normal. Anyone know why this might happen? I've tried listening to the AC to hear if the compressor is kicking on at that same time, but I don't think so. I definitely see a flicker when the AC compressor kicks on, but not a color shift.

I noticed it too. but after a month or so it ceased.
Its my first grow with them, so far im happy, but i would ask how is the potency and overal apeal compared to hps, mh or best mh dual lightning??(i mean two different 400 discharges in one box)

Is this a true CMH? It's supposed to be run on a MH ballast, not HPS. Any thoughts/experiences with it in an agro setting?

Are there any digital/electric ballasts that can be used with the ceramic MH? Preferably a
dim-able ballast--?

Hey everyone! so i've decided to go HPS over CMH for my micro set up. Curious though since ill be confined to roughly 5 cubic feet.. Where can i get an electronic ballast for a 150 CMH bulb? what bulb/ballast would you all recommend for a 150 watt set up? thanks so much!

Hey guys, i just bought my first 400w cmh (philips retro white 4k). I've read quite a bit of this thread. About couple dozen pages and used search but couldn't find the answer i was looking for. I know someone has asked this before but is cmh really as effective as they say? Is MH (veg) & HPS (flow) together a better choice over cmh? I've read about the cmh lamps two to three years ago and then everyone was appraising them. What's the average g/watts? Does anyone having this problem that the lamp flickers quite a bit when lighting up? Thanks guys for the answers. I forgot something i had to ask but it'll will come to me later.

This guy lists CMH as being compatible but there is no data to confirm it. If anyone knows for sure it would be very helpful if you shared. I also don't understand why they say you can retrofit a ballast with a lower wattage one, very odd.

Thats not exactly true anymore. If you are running 175W or less you use a pulse start metal halide ballast. To ensure you get the right one, you need to match the ANSI number on your ballast with the ANSI number on your bulb. These ballasts can be magnetic or electronic, as long as the ANSI codes match you should be ok.

When you are looking at 250W or more you have some options. The traditional option is to use a magnetic HPS ballast with a conversion bulb like the ones here.

There are now bulbs that work on magnetic metal halide ballasts, which you can find here I have not used these so all the info I have is from the advanced lighting site.

The GE UltraMax and Nuvation ballasts are digital ballasts that work with higher wattage CMH bulbs. GloGreen will be releasing a CMH ballast in early 2012, as far as I know. I am curious to see how they perform when they are released.

mister_terious you are right that that option is the easiest way to go. Personally I suggest that anyone who wants to try CMH use a HPS conversion bulb and a HPS ballast as it's the simplest way to go.

The pressurized ceramic element is already a dangerous missile if it pops on one end. Making them in higher wattages requires much higher pressures, resulting in lamps that absolutely require enclosed hoods and are still dangerous to use.
