cation exchange capacity / coco article beginner friendly

Wow this thread has gotten waaaaaaaaaaay off-topic.

Many coco product manufacturers buffer their coco with 8 kg of calcium nitrate per cubic meter of coco, but higher treatment of Ca and Mg will create a lower K and Na percentage on the CEC. These more advanced buffering processes involve a much greater amount of time, but result in much lower K and Na levels on the exchange.

Personally, I find using (dissolved) hydrated gypsum in my irrigation water during veg (around 1g/L) does the trick.

If you want to use cheap unbuffered coir, immediately after transplanting, dose the coir with gypsum water (up to 2g/L) and then leach it heavily (at least twice the volume of the container) and then add your nutrient solution. The entire process takes about an hour and the plants don't seem to mind one bit. Then use hydrated gypsum during veg (at least a month). By flowering you probably won't need that Calcium Nitrate or Cal-Mag or whatever you normally use.
