Canadian Gorilla vs. Mother Nature

You think it could of been a ground hog that munched those stalks?? I've seen groundhogs render big healthy outdoor plants to mere nubs

No ground hogs here vince.

Yo gg sucks man about the plants that isnt flowering. i hope that u can make a few seeds though that way they will be better for the 2016 season. maybe u should get some HFH gear next year. i hope the S6 will finish for u i want to see how she turns out..gl bro

Thanks Ky for the well wishes. Gave up on the breeding this year. The Bangi males were not dropping pollen yet on last visit and I felt there was not enough time to develop mature seeds so pulled males.

oh - 53 lat would be the problem!

Oh it's a a problem alright. Especially If you like sativas. Dropping to 1 C - 34 F tonight with a frost warning.

Hope everyone is having a great finish to their season.
Peace GG

Hope most of your crop is ripening up. Probably not too many more weeks left up there! Looking forward to hearing how you're getting along... Is there any difference between indica and sativa with frost tolerance. I would think indicas could handle frost a little better. :smoke:

Hey pipeline, I hope most of my crop is ripe too. Haven't been out for 4 weeks. It's either going to be mostly ready or mostly mush. There has been a least 3 frosts, 2 I think were minor but couple days ago -4 C or 25 F . As well as above average rainfall for September after drought most of summer. As for Indica or Sativa I would guess Indica, but don't have enough experience to comment either way. Will update next week with results, good, bad or ugly. Wish me luck.

Hopefully things go well for you, We have had a ton of "risk of frost" and definitely frosts on the windows. The growing spot is a big dictator to how frost resistant the plants are. More shade and surrounding green foliage usually results in more mold and stretch but has always allowed my plants to finish into october. In which case when I grew in open fields with more open air the plants would weather really quick and take frosts hard.

I suspect two big factors are wind chill and the shock in the morning of 0 deg c temps going to full sun on the plants.

I have a Nepalese sativa that will almost go to november on the right year when most plants have died. 45 deg north coastal

Wow thats cold. We had a couple good rains in Sept. Thats not the best time for rain. Hope mold isn't too bad. Morning sun helps a lot, but later in the year the sun is low for much longer in the morning. Good luck! :smoke:

Still at large...
I share the same situation BT.. @46 some years are rough, some decent.
Frost has hit a couple places already, to help slow the mold I go out check on them and pay close attention to the leaves that dwell with in the buds.... if they got a light frost and the tips turn black/die I make sure to clip it close to the stem and get them out. If they stay in chances are it'll start mold once died... perfect culture for it to thrive.

I wish ya the best of luck and karma GG:tiphat:
I still have a few out myself.

Hey...our environment isn't that different. Ive dealt with 3 separate days of frost this fall, worst being -1c.
So far the only 3 plants I still have out are doing great considering.(dutch passion Holland's hope, peakseeds skunkberry and texada skunk)

Good, bad and the Ugly

Good, bad and the Ugly

Well I promised an update good, bad or ugly and this update is a combination of all three.

Lets start with the good. In Canada a new federal government was elected. The leader ran a campaign with a promise to legalize MJ. So in the not so distant future recreational MJ might be legal in the great white north as well as medical MJ. The wheels of government move very slowly so this may take a couple years. Keep your fingers crossed that we may be able to legally ingest MJ in Canada after about 92 years of prohibition.

Some more good news is that there was very little mold on the plants. This is after absolutely no sprays or chemicals of any kind. But there was also very little bud on the plants. Of 6 different strains, not one finished before the killing frosts. Fast is not fast enough this far north.

I probably should not have picked sativa dominant strains. Clones would have shaved a week or so off the finishing times also. 3 strains were about 50 - 60 % done. To top it all off after 4 months of very little damage from mother nature, she stepped in with a knock out punch in the last and most important month. As the surrounding vegetation died off in the last month the rabbit or porcupine ringed or girdled all the stems stopping growth at a critical time.

As you can see from the pics the native vegetation has all done their thing and has prepared for winter awhile ago. The only green around was my plants. You can also see from the pics the plants were frozen from a strong frost when I went to harvest. More update tomorrow.

hey GG u can still make some good hash with those though. i learned alot of new things this year as well. i pulled the one the church a bit to early due to those fkn rippers so im gonna have to hash it out as well. i most likely wont be growing the church no more anyways though. the one that did finish got the most bland taste ever. i will be sticking to 6 strains next year. 1. delahaze 2. bangi haze 3. super lemon haze 4.blueberry headband 5. blue widow 6.pineapple chunk.

Looks like some decent buds even though they're not done. Plants look cold! Were the buds melted like some of the leaves?

Hey KY, I'll be smoking the best buds, making oil, and cooking with the rest. Looks like you have a super lineup for next year. You had a great year this yr and next will be better I'm sure.

Hi pipeline, The Buds were mostly in good shape, very little mold. Only problem is they were at best 60% done. The plants were frozen when I went to harvest.:yoinks:

gg sorry to here that brother. make the oil like i did it will last a while. have you looked into the fast version strains at sweet seeds or are you thinking of some auto strains. i see that referman has done some new ones that sound super and i think they will be excellent for your lat. with the short season. i know he made a willie auto. look at his out door thread you will see his new stuff

1.5 hrs can mess up your season bad

1.5 hrs can mess up your season bad

Well on my quest to find fast Sativa dominant strains I've learned a lot. I'm going to try to explain how latitude can make a huge difference.

To illustrate this I'm going to talk about a couple other guerrilla growers on here. (I hope they don't mind) I've rounded off their latitudes to make it easier. I'm also using daylight hrs. excluding twilight. We all tried Serious 6 this season so this helped to demonstrate the difference in latitudes.

Kygiacomo - approx 35 latitude - started S6 early in his season. He had problems with flowering as soon as they were planted out. The plants flowered, then reverted and never really recovered.

Two heads - approx 45 latitude - Planted late June. Let them do their thing and harvested by mid September. Really nice looking plants and bud.

Me, gorilla ganja - approx 55 latitude - Planted out late May. Let plants do their thing and harvested mid October. At best 60% finished. Had to harvest due to killing frost.

So there are several things that can effect harvest dates. High nitrogen in flower, being root bound in pots, big plants, starting from clone vs. seed, etc. etc. But here I'm just sticking to daylight hrs.
Really it is longer dark hrs. that build up the hormone that will trigger flowering.

Two heads had the best result with this strain so I will use his latitude as a guide. At 45 latitude his plants started to flower mid July with about 15 hrs of daylight. About 8 weeks later, mid September, he harvested.

Kygiacomo at latitude 35 on June 21, which is the longest day of the year, only has 14.5 hrs of daylight. So you can see why he had problems with the plants wanting to flower right away. I believe he put his plants out in April with only 13 hrs or so of daylight.

Me at the other extreme- 55 latitude- longest day of yr. June 21 has about 17 hrs. of daylight. To reach the 15 hrs of daylight required to trigger S6 doesn't happen till mid August. + 8 weeks is about mid October.

Killing frost on average happens here 3rd week of September. So a proper finish is very hard to accomplish. The temps at the end of season are also very cool which slows growth considerably.

I hope this all made sense. I think if Kygiacomo and me tweaked our grow next year we can get S6 to finish properly at our latitudes. He will have trouble stopping his plants from flowering I will have trouble getting mine to flower in time.

So in conclusion 1.5 hrs of daylight is enough of a difference between a nice harvest and a mediocre harvest.

twoheads - Serious 6 - Early September at 45 Lat.

What I would do is grow mainly S6 plants next year and pollinate them early flowering before they get bigger than pea size flowers. Use the seed harvested from the earliest flowering individuals for the next year. Depends on the genetics, but its probably your best shot for finishing regular photo period triggered lines up there. You have to grow them to seed for a couple seasons to select for plants with genetics that grow better in those conditions. Have to be good at labeling and organization... :smoke:

Hi flboy, Thank's for the kind words, Got a fair amount of decent smoke and the oil has been great so far, made a couple batches.
Have my eye on auto's and semi autos for next yr. Been watching reefermans breeding this yr. his gear is on the short list as well as Hybrids from hell, LaBuenaHierba Seeds, and some Canadian genetics . Tough part is narrowing it down to a few strains.
Always on the hunt for fast strains for the north.
Your grow is looking awesome.
