Boy am I glad I ran into this thread! Perfect timing.

3 weeks ago I made up my mind that after 32 years of smoking, Nov 1st is the day.

I have my mind set. And I am ready for this. I'll be buying the lozenges, gum and Tootsie Pops.

My husband and kids have been on me to quit for years but I was not ready to do it. But I am now, for me.

Bushy, your story is very horrific, I am sorry you had to go through all of there, but I am so glad you are still here to tell it. Your story is definately an eye opener and it scared the hell out of me. It added more willpower for me to do this. I know I can do it, and I know it's going to be hard as hell but it is time. It's time for me to start reversing the damage already done.

I do not have Cancer, but the emphysema is creeping up on me and I can totally feel it. And it is really scaring me. So I know I have to do this if I want to live. That's all there is to it. So please wish me well.

MrsB and i both used to smoke. We have been tobacco free for almost nine years. I was a logger and ran heavy equipment .... 3 packs a day. If we can quit anyone can quit. GMT sounds like your pot might need a better flush before harvest. If you get all the ferts out it normally doesnt go out so easy and leaves a nice light colored ash . We replaced tobacco with pot ..... it helped alot but the craving still pops up now and again.... i just dont pay attention to it . Good luck all on your personal battles ... stay strong. Quiting tobacco is one of the best things ive ever done . Good luck and much love :)

Keep up with the fight Mr. Mustard. Just because you stumbled doesn't mean you fell.

I am still off the tobacco this time around. About 8 months now. I went out drinking a couple of weeks ago and smoked about 3 of the bastards. Made me sick feeling into the next day.

Just keep fighting the fight! It gets easier.

Well ill be stopping next friday..( the earliest I can get in a stop smoking service...its worthwhile though coz they do provide support and whatever)
GMT....My neatiesburn just fine...you just have to roll em a tad looser than normal buddy.... also, the crabbiness side of things..those patches really do work mate, I didnt have any of that...and if I felt a need ti do something with my hands like that I just had a single skinner.. if you get the 24 hour ones though Id take em off before bed-this goes for any1 else too if you wear that patch at night you can have some very vivid(and frank;y some of mine were quite isturbing) dreams and nightmares....I mentione dthis and they said just take it off when you go to bed..sorted..
If you ver decide you do wanna quit though GMT... single sheeters are the way to go...coz big spliffs its unbelieveable how much gets wasted...any1 knows that u only really smoke half a joint.... A single sheeter will have the same amount in it you would put in a 3 sheeter or king-size. what you say about the increased intensity its simply because its not watered down klike with baccy...ill tend to take 3 or four tokes and put it out(got a great little pyramid thing that snuffs joints without knocking the end off and it all dropping out the top lol) then go back to it when I want to top up. I hit the bong more than anything now though coz its fast and im a lzy twat lol.
For neaties I use a Red Eye spliff stick(28 quid but worth every penny), which deals with any extra harshness. Its a fact that weed hits ur lungs at a higher temperaure than baccy.... well the splif stik uses a maze pathway that the smoke travels up and down to cool it..... werks a treat and smokes great, also serves as a nice mini chillum style one hitter too.
so, ill post on my prgress with the giving up again.....Im not gonna be beaten because I also resent giving the bastards who are keeping our herb down any of my money like Manga said..... at least the UK Gov dont get any tak from mine hahaha, and the cig companies r gonna get nothing from me veryu soon...that money as I said, will be buying me a volcano Itll tale me 6 months coz the cigs are cheap but its a good thing to save for eh...
good luck to any1 else quitting, and well done to all those who have and still are...
Never mind and try again to all those who stumbled like me.
Be lucky now,
Harry

Well I'm been lurking here for too long so I'll start posting, I've been smoking a pack or more a day since I was 12, it's been over 10 years and I've tried to quit a couple times, but I have better resolve now! So I quit as of 11.9 so two days and counting!

Good thread BOG!

One piece of advice I can give is to get off the processed tobacco's first! Most brand names have a ton of added shit in them, switch to a good RYO or a brand with no additives such as American Spirit or Peter Stokebye(loose tobacco for RYO). Then set a date and quit! I speak from experience when I say that the crap they put in those cigs gives WAY more withdrawls than smoking plain unadulterated tobacco!

Stay cig free everyone!

Clean since 12:00am Jan. 1, 2000. I had a cigarette at midnight, reached over to the ashtray and put it out as the new millenia rang in.

I quit cold turkey, no patch, no gums, no pills. I had a 1/4lb of weed for myself and was determined to get off the cancer sticks.

It's not the tobbacco that is addictive. It's not the tobacco that gives you cancer. It's the crap the cancer companies put in them to keep you hooked for life. Ironic huh?

Heavy cigarette smoking played a large factor in the loss of my father at the young age of 59. I was determined that I was not going to let the damn things kill me!

Free yourself of the nasty chemicals in cigarettes, there are SO many things in life you will find WAY more enjoyable when you do. Including the all important BREATHING.

*steps off soap box*

Sorry, I really hate the tobbaco industry.

As you can surmise tobacco very nearly did me in over a decade ago. I was ordered to quit but they didnt forbid marijuana. That was the agreement and I believe tobacco was a major component in my health demise. I am a recovering tobaccohaulic and occasionally I fall back just like many of you.

Tobacco is more addictive than heroin so dont feel so bad. Its gonna kill us eventually but you can put it off by quitting. We will all die but don't be in a hurry because we need time to become wise and enlightened in this life.

I don't worry about dying much anymore but I know Mrs. BOG would be sad. If you love anyone perhaps your addiction can be beaten or if not beaten you can at least combat it. Quit that tobacco soon!

Or you may not be so lucky as I was to survive and ski. BOG

I look forward to my heavenly realm on this planet for some time but when you die on a mountain you really have the ultimate experience. Let me die on Big Sky!!! BOG

You havent lived till you've gone down Tuckerman's Ravine on Mount Washington! That ravine is the holy grail of skiing!

I got caught up in a storm in May! We were at the top of the bowl and we literally had to get to the bottom and get out of there if we wanted to live! turned out to be one of the worst storms that year at the top temps went down to like 25-30 degF below.

We were dressed in summer ski gear(rated to maybe 15-20deg F positive) We were fucked if we didn't get off that mountain, we somehow made it down the ravine, with like 15ft visibility just flying down the hill on skies praying to anything that a boulder didn't pop up or a ice crack or something that else that was going to kill us, blowing our whistles the whole way down so we knew where we were all at.

Once we dropped into the funnel at the bottom the visibility lifted and we were finally able to see and it was intense. The whole sky was shifting thre noise was so loud it reverberated in your entire body, you just felt like the end of the world was that exact moment. I've never held more fear and respect over nature than I did at that moment, and I've had tornado's(albit smaller ones) within 100-150 yards of me, nothing comes close to the awe that I faced on that ravine.

If you want to feel nature in all it's glory and power there's no better place than Tuckermans Ravine

okay i know you don't want to hear another sad story but let me tell you what it is like to take care of a loved one who has emphysema......

cigarette smoking gave my mom a massive heartattack at age 58. after struggling to recover after being out of work and in and out of the hospital for 9 months, she gets diagnosed with COPD, which is the precursor to emphysema.

over the next two years she gets shorter and shorter of breath every day. one day she could no longer push the grocery cart in the grocery store. she started having episodes which resemble asthma attacks when she feels as if she is drowning. to avoid feeling panicked from these frequent episodes she is on anti-anxiety medication. currently she can no longer walk down a hall without getting severely winded. of course she is on oxygen tank 24 hours a day. she takes between 10 and 20 different medications including inhalers and steroids like prednisone. because of the prednisone treatment she has developed type II diabetes and now must use insulin......

does it get any worse? wait......it does.....

anyone want to find out how it feels to have to give your own mother a shower, dry her off, dress her, change her diapers when she is too weak to make it to the bathroom, and so on?

imagine how you would feel if you needed someone to do the most personal chores for you because you are too sick.....

so tobacco use hits home for real......for some reason i never smoked cigs, but my dad still does and he is getting short of breath and coughing every day......

even though my mom is so sick he just can't kick the habit.

please understand that i don't condemn anyone for the choice to use tobacco. but if you or someone you love has a problem with tobacco maybe my story will urge you into action. tobacco is the world's most addictive drug, way more addictive than heroin in every respect.....

society has accepted cigarette smoking but seems unwilling to address the absolute medical nightmares it has created......

again, i'm sorry if you are offended. i know that you know that cigarette smoking causes emphysema. i am just trying to personalize it and show you what you have to look forward to if you or someone you love has a tobacco addiction....

kind regards, gp

Lady Olive, the fact that you made an attempt encourages me greatly for you. :D

You did the hardest part already. You made the decision to quit and this is a huge success!!! Congratulations my dear.

The next time you will realize that it's gonna be tougher than you thought. That you may need to prepare and get your willpower up by having a plan. Those patches for one thing and a big bag of weed ready. A jar of valium wouldnt hurt. You made it through the first door and the others are waiting. Did you notice any difference in how you felt after you started smoking again? That heaviness in the chest come back? I feel that you are going to quit lady olive so be proud of yourself. I see your inner beauty.

GuineaPig, its hard and as a paramedic I often visited the same people with copd or emphysema and it kills them slowly. Its very sad and painful and your compassion is being increased by your experience with your mother. My years in service of a hospital made me look into the eyes of so many sufferring people that I was forced to learn compassion. It's easier not to look but that isnt human. You have my respect and love GP because I know what you are living and facing. Remember what nam myoho renge kyo means and it doesnt mean we get what we deserve.

Sure karma is real but we all make mistakes and die from them. Onto the sons do the sins of the fathers fall to our dismay. Sufferring need not be so prevalent and as individuals we need to make good decisions and try and help others. We will die soon too and we will all have made some error in our health strategy so dont blame yourself.

Until then we can strive to live as men and women with dignity in control of our addictions at least. Do it for your children. BOG
