Looks like some California lawmakers and or state law enforcement seek more federal action than they're getting, enough to threaten the president's reelection. Strange days indeed.

interesting info, it's always tough to know what is happening behind federal doors

I got the same impression.

These "California" U.S. Attorneys work for DOJ. They are the FEDS. Their boss is Eric Holder, the US Attorney General. They are not a California State official of any sort.

Draw whatever conclusions you wish. If you read the article, I can assure you the writer is far more objective than you atm. The article doesn't just reference attorneys, it references state law enforcement as well. Not to mention folks are bitching they're not getting enough federal support.

Your ideological underpinnings are your business. I just posted the article. By all appearances, things are deeper than you're willing to consider.

They just recently built a library in my town, and it was paid for by voluntary contributions (donations) from the public raised over a period of 5 years prior to construction. Not a single gun was used.

Sounds like the perfect model for everything. It is scary that others need to speed up the building with guns pointed at their neighbors.

I'm gonna be careful the next time I ride by the library. Wouldn't want to overlook a renovation and have to stare down a gun barrel.

I cannot believe I agree with Steve D'Angelo on his comments that he believes the pressure for this new crackdown is coming from Washington NOT California.

"They've made a calculation - sadly correct so far - that the president doesn't care enough about this issue to intervene. Unfortunately for the president, though, voters are going to blame him at the ballot box."

Sounds like some have differing opinion.

California's Doctors Back Legalization Of Marijuana

10/16/11 08:21 PM ET
ap_wire.png

ANAHEIM, Calif. — California's largest industry group for doctors is calling for the legalization of marijuana even as it maintains that the drug has few proven health benefits.

Trustees of the California Medical Association adopted the new stance at its annual meeting Friday in Anaheim, according to a Los Angeles Times report ( ). http://lat.ms/qR96hb

Dr. Donald Lyman, the Sacramento physician who wrote the group's new policy, said doctors are increasingly frustrated by the state's medical marijuana law, which allows use with a doctor's recommendation. Physicians are put in the uncomfortable position of having to decide whether to recommend a drug that's illegal under federal law, Lyman said.

"It is an open question whether cannabis is useful or not," he told the newspaper. "That question can only be answered once it is legalized and more research is done. Then, and only then, can we know what it is useful for."

The CMA acknowledges health risks associated with marijuana use and proposes regulation similar to alcohol and tobacco, but the group says the consequences of criminalization outweigh the dangers.

The federal government considers cannabis a drug with no medical use. The CMA wants the White House to reclassify it to help promote further research on its medical potential. Earlier this year, the Obama administration turned down a request to reclassify marijuana. That decision is being appealed in federal court by legalization advocates.

Lyman called current laws a "failed public health policy."
But critics within the medical community said association leaders did not consider the broader implications of legalizing marijuana.

"I think it's going to lead to more use, and that, to me, is a public health concern," Dr. Robert DuPont, an M.D. and professor of psychiatry at Georgetown Medical School, told the Times.

Members of the CMA, which represents more than 35,000 California physicians, were informed of the trustees' vote Saturday. It is the first major medical association in the nation to urge legalization of cannabis, according to a group spokeswoman.

The group's decision provoked an angry response from some in law enforcement.

"Given everything that we know about the physiological impacts of marijuana – how it affects young brains, the number of accidents associated with driving under the influence – it's just an unbelievably irresponsible position," said John Lovell, spokesman for the California Police Chiefs Association.

The CMA's parent organization, the American Medical Association, has said the federal government should consider easing research restrictions, according to the Times.

I'd bet the fucker his annual salary that statistics don't back his DWI baloney. And John Lovell ought to keep his pig snout shut regarding medical aspects.

ON TOPIC - I just got home from a dispensary tour, I hit 9 in the bay area and 10 in the Valley, and very few clubs are business as usual id say 3 truly BUSINESS AS USUAL, however All the other dispensaries have completely abandoned all edibles( Two club were giving away all you could carry with a "Donation of 150+", and Clones almost everyone had zero clones and every Disp said they would no longer be selling them.

There is true fear, and many were still claiming not to have received the letters but i went to many of the largest and I think they're lieing trying to figure out whats up or somethings wrong with the AG's numbers. Or maybe the letter went to the property owners and not the disp.

Yikes,I'm going to do a SF dispensary mood check this week. I can remember '05-06 standing in overnight lines at SR-71(BlueSky) for clones.

I surf the boards on Craigslist and Thugtrader regularly and I'm expecting a surge in ads if shit hits the fan. Thugtrader has a new mobile dispensary hiring drivers and Cl has two new mobile dispensarys and several new clone vendors.

no disrespect meant here, just keeping it one hunnit with y'all as usual....

Although it is HIGHLY likely that there are many other factors that lead to Obama's decision to be so specifically harsh towards the state of California and its abundance of omniscient,
arrogant, and assuming, pro-medical marijuana people, I am totally convinced that the men and women that were/are involved in the whole "medical marijuana" scene in California, (or the people that can also be described as the "faces of medical marijuana" within California) had made an extremely costly mistake by not understanding and educating one another about the concept of "self-image"....

ever hear the phrase "Image is everything" ??????

.....the phrase DOES hold great truth....

as pioneers of the medical marijuana movement, the state of California and its people were/are the "FACE OF THE MOVEMENT"... .............

Barack Obama (Barry Soetero?) and the rest of his cohorts are certainly NOT going to allow a state that has people [who are so careless of their image] be the "model state" that the rest of the states aim to follow....

I PERSONALLY feel that this step was extremely crucial for the medical marijuana community to flourish NATIONWIDE in the future..... there are other med states that have indeed learned from California and its laws and have improved upon them and can be held responsible for the positive EVOLUTION of the medical marijuana movement.

Once the dispensary owners, and other popular faces of the mmj industry can re-think out their images, and settle down their ego's a bit, THEN there will be RAPID & positive changes throughout the community....

a good way to begin the image makeover would be for a highly motivated individual from each medical state to recruit a panel of image savvy dispensary owners and have them establish a list of acceptable and unacceptable practices for other dispensaries to follow. For example, (although I have nothing but love for Bob) it would be unacceptable for dispensaries to crank out Bob Marley music, or display posters of Bob Marley smoking a joint on dispensary walls. This simple example could be 1 of many standards for dispensaries to follow if they wish to move the industry forward. If each dispensary was obligated to follow a list of "industry standards" then naysayers and anti-mmj people would have a harder time calling "BULLSHIT" on the "medical" aspect of this industry............

i can go on and on and on and on..... and i am SURE there are others who agree wholeheartedly with me on this matter...

This is an excellent point and I agree completely. Although image extends beyond the dispensary itself. Another aspect is what do the faces of it's customers look like. Not in the specific sense which would get into identity but in general. The most common complaint I've heard from nay sayers of medical marijuana and dispensaries is that these places draw a bad element and very few of the customers appear to be people in actual need but rather look like people who look like they never left Woodstock. Now before anyone goes there I'm not suggesting these places start enforcing a dress code or make people cut their hair. What I am suggesting is they be a little more involved in preventing people from abusing the system. Few of the people who genuinely need medical marijuana look like they're stuck in the 70's. Sure maybe some do but the vast majority don't from what I've seen. The impression I get from what I keep hearing though is these places seem more interested in selling to as many people as possible instead of selling to as many genuinely sick people as possible.

Another big step in the right direction would be for more of these businesses to be working closely with Medical institutions to clearly establish the benefits and/or dosages even if doing so limits the amount of potential customers and/or how much they need to buy and take to reap the medical benefits. I have a friend in Michigan who has been working closely with doctors from a Medical University to help establish proper dosages for young cancer patients (children) so they can reap the benefits without having to smoke it and or become as wasted as consuming marijuana can often make a person.

I know such steps might hamper the push to totally legalize marijuana but in the end, it's irresponsible for anyone to allow the medical marijuana movement to be disturbed by those who really just want to get high for recreational purposes. I mean I'm all for legal use and don't think it's right for the government to prevent people from using such a harmless natural substance but that should be kept seperate from the MMJ movement and I believe in due time if MMJ is allowed to properly flourish the legal recreational use of it will come not long afterwards.

Feds move in to shutdown marijuana dispensaries
2:14 AM, Oct 18, 2011 | comments

SACRAMENTO, CA - Another week, another shutdown. Medizen medical marijuana dispensary on Northgate Boulevard in Sacramento was shutdown early Monday morning. It is a city licensed business, but that hasn't stopped the feds from moving in.

Several weeks ago, federal prosecutors in California announced they plan on cracking down on medical marijuana dispensaries. Even though medical marijuana is legal in this state, it's still considered an illegal drug by the federal government.

DEA agents began clearing out the Medizen dispensary even before it opened for business Monday. Agents also raided Central Valley Caregivers Co-operative in Stockton about the same time.

A Medizen employee told News10 that his his manager and landlord were never notified by letter or by the federal government. The business was forced to shut down without warning.

"I was supposed to open at 10 a.m. They got here at 7:30. I heard... they came in and basically took all our stuff, seized everything, took all our cash and product and stuff and that's basically it," said employee Mike Amarao."They just said they're shutting all the clubs down in Sacramento, that's all we heard."

Some people argue that the closures will financially hurt the city of Sacramento.

The 4 percent tax on city dispensaries just went into effect in July. That tax is estimated to generate $2 million dollars for city coffers.

Attorney Jeff Kravitz represents several dispensaries in Sacramento County. He says some of his clients have shut down voluntarily--saying that it's not worth fighting the federal government. He says all the closures are sure to cause more unemployment and decreased property values.
