Purtane sent me a fat case (14 cans) of their new canned n-butane for residual testing, thanks Gary! Seamless cans, and supposedly more filtering, we'll see... I've got a couple of cans of it and my Mason jar in the freezer, I hope to get the results posted up today.

Puretane 9X had 0.0003g of residue (three cans shot to the same test bag, this is the result divided by three)

Puretane 9X, USA, 300ml can, reads on the bottom, "14137 (1) 346570SC" SN's "02719" "02731" and "02743"

The residue is dry not 'greasy,' with no color (whitish?) or smell.

I'd probably need to boil off half a dozen cans to the same bag to get a more accurate test result with my current scale. Not sure it's really necessary, we're down to basically no Mystery Oil. Peace

Wow! That's orders of magnitude less than the others!
Do you think it could be attributed to the seamless cans?

Puretane 9X #2 had 0.0015g of residue (six cans shot to the same test bag, this is the result divided by six)

Puretane 9X, USA, 300ml can, reads on the bottom "14137 (1) 346570SC" SN's "02608, 02663, 02666, 026675, 02694, and 02695"

I was assuming all the cans were identical, but today's result compared to the results of yesterday's three can run is too large a difference to be accounted for by measurement error alone. Still extremely clean butane, congratulations Puretane.

Puretane 9X #3 had 0.0018g of residue (five cans shot to the same test bag, this is the result divided by five)

Puretane 9X, USA, 300ml can, reads on the bottom "14137 (1) 346570SC" SN's "02674, 02734, 02740, 02741, and 02758"

I should, and will do multiple can shoots to the same test bag with Ronson or Zippo for comparison. I have no intention of getting a better scale, my results are good enough for you guys to make wise shopping choices, and we've already established that even in the worst case scenario there isn't enough nonvolatile residue to be a safety concern.

Contact Puretane, I think there might be a distributer up there already.

You're welcome, towards the end it's become interesting, just one of those things or... ;-) Uncle John

Glow 5X had 0.008g of residue

Glow 5X, China, 300ml can, reads on the bottom "2014/02/02 2016/02/01"

Glow 5X had only a moderate amount of residue, no added odorant/mercaptan, and only a very slight yellowish tint to it's non-volatile residue. With my new boil off setup I'm able to control the energy added to the dish under the collection bag much better and this time I saw the pentane or whatever that boils off at 76-81F. There was enough to flow across the bottom of the bag when tilted, half a teaspoon would my rough estimate. It took a minute or two to evaporate off with minimal energy added. If you're doing a decent heat or heat/vacuum purge this shouldn't be a problem imo, I suggest being more concerned about the non-volatile residue.

You guys are always asking about other brands of English butane...

Crown "premium European gas, 99.995 pure butane fuel, near zero impurities"

Hope to test it tomorrow, I'll start with one can, if it rocks as expected, i'll shoot as many cans to the same bag as necessary to get a tight result.

Seems to have a nice scent, no surprise, this is distributed by a 'N2O whipper' distributor, they should know people's tastes... ;-)

Crown had 0.003g of residue

Crown, England, 300ml can, reads on the bottom "DOM 29.03.14 00:34"

Residue was a faint white with no odor.

I intend on doing further residual testing on this to hone in the exact amount since it's excellent butane at a decent price.

Hee, hee, hee, I found an on line source for 99.9% R-600 and R-290 refrigerant in 30 and 50# tanks with 1/4" flare fitting on the valves, that is attractively priced and will ship.

Got a tank of both the butane and propane headed this way for testing. Check out Ecogreen Industries, who sells eco friendly alternative refrigerants.

Would love to see this stuff tested for residue and how it compares to cans. Trying to get a read on how much this ecoGreen cost versus cans, how is my math?

If butane weighs 4.86 lbs per gallon
3785.4 ml in a gallon so
3785.4/4.86=778.89 ml per lb
778.89ml*24 lbs=18,693.36ml in 24lbs
300ml in most cans
1,866,936/300=62.31 cans
$275 for 24lbs so....
That's $4.41 per 300 ml.
