Oh, yeah, that was the skunky aroma paper. The later two studies go more into this.

They use ice-hash rosin because it's free of contaminants, and the high concentration makes it easier to analyze with their methods, I think.

You definitely can have 2 % terpene flower with an aroma that overpowers a 3 % terpene sample. Even terpenes are not equally strong in their odor potency, and you can have a very low concentration of camphene overpowering the high pinene contents of a sample.
The higher terpenes level will help to have a strong taste as well not only the smells,I really don't believe a bud with higher terpenes can have less taste than a lower one. I have never send anything to a lab so I have no idea of the content of my own grown buds but I've noticed a stronger taste since I've switched to LED and this is due to higher terpenes content. The lower temps in the grow room allow the plants to keep more terpenes in the flowers this translates in stronger taste;
All those research around taste in cannabis is another sign the aromas are taken more and more seriously and it is today easier to find good tasting flowers than ever.

bottom line is, the science behind cannabis cannabinoid compounds is still in its infancy. one day someone will find the perfect combination of specific compounds for specific needs. Untill then I rely on my palate and my kuntz that that tested lower terpenes than my apples and bananas has a lot more taste to it than its counterpart and yet the apples and bananas smells a lot stronger than the kuntz

Personally I don't remember any flowers who had a strong smell but a weaker taste, or the other way around from my experience the strong smells translate in strong taste. Maybe some long term storage can have an influence on this and modify the link between small and taste. I find this really strange, a stronger smelling buds with less taste than one with one lower smells is really not my experience.
I hope one day we'll be able to create exactly the aromas who want in our flowers or extracts. I've had one plant in decades with a green apple aromas, reall strong and obvious to everybody smoking the buds, I've never been able to find another plant with this terpenes profile and intensity and I' like to have again s plant able to create this scent/taste, it was one the best tasting buds I've had in my life, it came from a Sour-Jack cross not Karma's version, it was Twin Turbo Diesel x Jack Herrer#22. I've heard of the Sour-Apple clone who is made of Sour D x C99 and I'd like to grow this cross but I can't find it anywhere in pure form.
Sorry @VerdantGreen for the off-topic discussion, I hope you don't mind. Have you heard of the Sour-Apple clone ? Maybe you can have access to it? it would ne nice if you could make S1 with this plant.
