Broad Mites?

I'll try and get some pics up over the weekend mate, I'd appreciate opinions. I've never experienced such highly glossy leaves though and really crinkly looking and appear to be quite blistered in places.

New growth isn't affected the worse though, it was as bad though, but I've sprayed them twice in the past seven days with Plant Vitality, which carries the Avid equivalent. Of course this coincides with the time I sealed the room up and brought fresh air in from outside so neither are conclusive.

I'm not seeing the spurt of growth I'd expect if everything is hunky dorey. Some of the new growth looks pretty normal, but so deadly slow in coming.

I'll get back with some pics in the next few days.

Thanks, TS

I'm coming from a similar direction to Tokesome. Certain I had off gassing with new carpets laid too apart from the grow space itself, I too had dealt with this over a prolonged period of time in the past.

I've sealed my room up pretty tight and got loads of fresh air traveling through the room to a similar spec as Toke.

8 days ago they looked like this

The leaves were turning rapidly, but like toke sealing the room and treating with Plant vitality (not the new "plant vitality plus", but the regular dilute yourself)

I pulled all the dead leaves on all plants but 3 to see what difference if any was going on.

A couple or so more from 8 days ago, very sad looking plants and grower here

After I stripped off the dead leaves

Rubbery crinkled looking leaves that appear to have blisters

even on the newest of growth

I'll post again with pics taken yesterday, a week on from these pics.

Thanks Trev

A week later some slow signs of improvement.

The ones in the middle with brown leaves are the three I left the dead leaves on, for a comparison with the others., but leaves are not dying off anywhere near as quickly as before, though the badly damaged leaves will no doubt be too damaged to last very long or function very well I imagine.

New growth not looking glossy as it appears now.

I'm feeding @ec7-8 with Rhizo, will Asprin help this condition?

The asprin thing sounds like a bit of a wind up, though I know its not.

You can see the plants are well retarded, I'm not sure if the plants can get to produce a half decent harvest if they do recover from this. I'm kinda hoping to get them on course as I have no alternatives to go with at the mo. My ears are to the ground though and should something decent come up I wouldn't hesitate to replace this lot, but I would like to know the problem is solved should I get the opportunity.

I got hold of a runt plant my mate was binning, just to put in with my lot and see if it gets affected. Its a runt, of the same strain, and it won't be very hardy so it should give me an indication of if I still have an issue or whether my plants are recovering or not from previous damage. This one was cloned from a flowering plant, hence the single blade leaves. Only prob with this is, its in Canna Terra Vega, and mine are in coco, I think they have different nute requirements, so the new one might not be happy on Canna coco nutes.

The new runt!

Are Broad mites found in the UK?
How would I find them, I have no jeweler's loop?

Thanks, TS

There are cheap 60-100X pocket microscopes you can get for $12
Check amazon they have a bunch... or radio shack equivalent

Best pick one up & either confirm or rule out the presence of broads Then you can narrow it down what you're dealing with
Even with a 30X loupe they are difficult to spot.
Hope it helps, GOOD LUCK!!!

Bump. . . . can anybody experienced confirm whether or not this is BM's from the pictures I've posted please.

Oh, Greenguy, I see that was aimed Tokesome, sorry, but I've hopefully got one coming this evening or over the weekend.

Cheers Trev

BM's

BM's

Looks very well like you could have BM's. One of the problems with BM's is the condition looks very much like other nute lock outs ect,ect...I had strange damage that I knew was not from any diff or lockout or environment (being a thirty five year grower) I could not locate one single egg or bug with a 100x scope. Although as my name suggests my eye's are not the best anymore. So I just went "all in " and tried "Judo" Just forbid different name. Something I would never usually do but I wanted to protect some strains I would never be able to protect messing around. My diagnosis was correct and after a unusually long period (That's the way broad mite toxin works) the plants new growth started getting better and better. I would suggest as many have said try to scope out the plants although I tried for weeks on end and never saw a single egg or bug . But the proof was there these bugs are amazingly damaging and super small. And the bugs can be gone totally and you will still see the result of there toxin weeks later. I would add (and I believe this to be true)I have read you could be "Infested" or have as little as one ,two, or three, single bugs on a plant to do serious damage...that's how damaging these little btards are...! Read ,read,read,...All the very best...!

The second photo down in the above link does look very much like the damage on my leaves.

If so, I've used Abemectin/AVID (Plant Vitality here in the UK) twice, only 4-7 days apart (stoner, sorry can't remember exactly, more likely 6 or 7 days apart), maybe that's why there's a slow down in damage. Would AVID adversely affect predators if I went that route now?

I think there is further glossing of some of the new growth, but not all, I'll check properly later and post a couple of update photos if any change is apparent.

I'm thinking if this is my problem, with my plants being few and very small whether a dose or two of predators would be the most effective way to eradicate them. 16 small plants, one room, no other plant matter in the house. Its not like there's a room full of flowering bushes, more like a few stalks with a few shoots of growth, should be easy pickings for a predator colony. Its all very sci fi at the microscopic level of these bugs, I'd like to watch it close up. Que David Attenborough!

I'm not certain that these predators are available in the UK, it not being a big problem here. (I've never heard of anyone in the UK having Broad Mite issues) I'm going to research this now.

Thanks Some Old Dude for your reply here, I am hoping you're wrong of course, but the more I look, the more I see similarities. I can't dissmiss the idea that serious off gassing could have the same affects, but I can't afford (literally) to leave any stone unturned so to speak.

Anyone else have any thoughts? I know I have to get a scope, but are the signs in my plants very obvious to you guys with experience? Please chip in if so, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks, Trev

My recent Broad Mite issues led to the discovery that Bonide Fruit Tree Spray (Malathion and Carbaryl being the insecticides present) is much more effective on the Broads than it is on their larger two spotted cousins, although this may be somehow related to the presence of white petroleum in the product vs their small size.

I had a nasty broad infestation at my home grow, had sprayed nothing there but Pyre and Aza for several months, plants brought to a secondary site were treated twice (two weeks apart) with the Bonide FT and recovered quickly.

I mention this for several reasons, Avid is scary and leads to many problems in humans, whereas the ingredients in the Bonide FT have much lower toxicity factors to vertebrates, especially larger ones. I wouldn't spray it during flower due to the presence of the white petroleum, but it seems like a step up from traditional neem and oil sprays without going all the way to Avid, Tetrasyn, etc.

How are the predator mites working out for you?

Ya ,we will see

How are the predator mites working out for you?
I won't know for a long time as I have used "Judo" a couple months ago at the first sign i had the tell tale signs coming back. so I suspect I will have the same results as last time .Nine months or sooner before the next outbreak. I have never had a full blown infestation at least where I could actually see them but I learned I did in fact have them (broads) After you have battled them for a few years you just know what the damage looks like. I just am trying to find a way to not use "Serious chems " anymore. I did have one of my mothers that started to get thrips and I held myself back from using spinosad just to see what would happen and a week later that plant is doing great with the thrip tracks going away. All my mothers are doing great as of now the real test will come after the clones I have going now are done (about another month) and then take new clones for second run. After that run if I'm still broad free I will consider them working. I will keep ordering the "swirslii's about every month and a half the breeder told me to do.

Yes

Yes

You don't use chems when you have the predators... You need to believe!

Straight up my brother. That's what I'm hoping for. Thus this year long experiment . My girls half way through flower show no signs of Broad damage (burnt pistols , blistering) my SSH from MN is looking outstanding. Lost SSH cut I had for a long time due to the broads a couple years ago (Bastards). Now I have seven new girls to choose a new "Pheno" from. I'll choose the one that has the most fruity sweet smell and taste...I friggin love SSH. Have a buttload of cross's I'll probably be putting outside near the beginning of fall and will post the cross's . I have some very good stuff. like Affie X Purple wreak X SSH ..ect,ect I have about twenty five different cross's from way back . I know many will not be viable but we will see. All the very best...!

Where to buy Swiriski Predators, UK

Where to buy Swiriski Predators, UK

Can anyone tell me where you can buy the Swiriski predator mites here in the UK? I've tried googling and ebay, but no luck.

Would it be ok to release them say a week after spraying with Abemectin/AVID?

I'm going to rig all 4 lights up and no moving air today and see how hot I can get the room, I'm guessing I'll need some elec heaters, which I'll borrow off friends if I can.

Thanks, Trev

I got some Swiriski predator mites, and they did not work. The problem was they would not come out of their little sachets. I put some packets under two humidity domes, and they came out of those, but not the ones in the grow rooms.

I believe the best movie reference for this would be "Failure to Launch."

So it seems as though I wasted $70. Although I don't really think it was a waste as I learned from the experience.

They will eventually come out. But that's why I sprayed first. I am going with the eradication or prevent defense. I have the sachets and have found them on patrol on my mothers and flower room clones. I thought they would;d not come out as well, it took about two weeks for them to start coming out. Problem is they are sitting in a house full of food in those sachets. Thus I would not use the sachets prolly if you have a serious infestation to control in flower. May be better to purchase the ones that come in a sprinkle tube (loose mites). My room is heavy fans and 80 -82 lights on with C02 and i still see them roaming around not many but I figure the more there food source expires the more they will come out.I just figure hopefully ordering them every couple of months eventually they will take over outside as well as in my rooms and colonize. Good luck.
