Toot toot! Here's some more of the Mystery Strain/Smelly One - the last-ever grow I did of it a couple of years ago at the old place, when I could still just about get away with stinking the place out. Very similar to the blues, physically, and also NL X BB, which has always led me me think there's some NL in the blues too. This one was soil, rather than the hydro pictured above, and was much more colourful after the flush. This was grown in a cellar, so it was a lot more chilly with the lights off...;)

Great pics. It's clearly got a lot of skunk in it, looks skunky, but that doesn't give us much of a clue as to what it is as most common strains were some kind of skunk or skunk hybrid back then.

What happened to all the Northern Lights is what I wanna know, I never knew many who grew skunk but NL was everywhere, both the short, piney afghan one (NL#2/Oasis) and the big chunky one with (for the time) crazy resin (NL#5), never seen any old NL clones on the net but I know they must still be in circulation.

They all got crossed to make 'mystery strains' with.. lol

After the initial wave of Dutch stuff, Red Beard, Northern Lights Skunk #1 ,Purple Haze, alot of growers got into the new "hybrids" ,, like AK47, Blueberry, Bubblegum, WW, Godzila, Jack Herer, and all lost interest in the older varieties IMO.

We blaim Big Bud! people expected every bud to be that size after that.. lol

Way I remember things, NL was THE staple of the cash cropper, the DWC guys who liked big plants did the NL5 based versions, the SOG guys running tables loved the short, fast piney single cola NL2. NL made a lot of people a lot of money in the early 90s.

Then AK47 and White Widow came along. AK was taken up by the NL growers as it was easy to grow for them as it performed great with the same schedules they ran with NL, it yielded huge, stank huge and was very potent. Widow was the oen that really became popular though and I came to hate the stuff, sure it was frosty, sure it produced hard big nuggets and it was potent but it had no taste and the stone was flat and boring.

Skunk was never a commercial strain where I lived, people didn't even grow it for stash, it was already old hat by the time I started in 94-95, people didn't want it, skunk was just the name for bog standard homegrown and it didn't bring as good a price as something with a more sought after name and from 95-98 at least Widow was the word on people's lips.

To be honest, only two things I saw grown commercially in person that I thought were interesting were General's Daughter (G13 x C99) and Hawaiian Indica. Why do ya think I learnt to grow my own? lol

I second that on the White Widow - it's never really taken off here, for exactly that reason - dull, flat, heavy stone, which always surprised me, given its heritage.

A friend has some monster 7-footers I got to see the other day, and they really were astounding in size - buds as long as my arm, and as dense. He has a really nice cut of WW - very fruity, and without the heavy stone - it's still boring for my purposes, but better than any I've tried elsewhere. Still never taken a cut off him, even though I'd probably get much higher yields than present.

But most folks still want the blues or the smelly one - for some reason, that stink just takes folks over, and they lose all rationality - until the front door's getting kicked in, and not always by the fuzz these days either...:(

Well, there are White Widows then there are White Widows. The original truly deserves it's rep, the others are crap. The original, as you know, is a Brazilian x Indian cross by Shantibaba and now called Black Widow to differentiate from the imitations, it is a great strain, the best phenos being the longest flowering, most sativa ones, when I grew it, the 11-12 week tall sat pheno was the one, it reeked of lemons and petrol, dripped in resin and blew your head off, taste was good, lemons with a whole load of fuel and solvent going on in the background. The high was not boring, good balanced effect, plenty of head effect to go with the body stone. The other phenos were good, but more indica and less to my tastes, they lacked the character of smell/taste compared to the sat one too, but they weren't that bland.

As Shanti has posted on icmag before, within a couple of months of Widow cleaning up at the cannabis cup, a lot of the other seedbanks were offering their own version of widow. One by one they paraded through the Greenhouse shop to buy their packets of Shanti's Widow then went away, grew their pack out and made f2s. As they did with all their lines, they selected for commercial motives - yield, fast flowering etc, so they picked the shortest, fastest, biggest yielding plants from their pack, and those weren't the best plants in quality terms.

Then there is Ingemar, he created a few strains outdoors up near the German border, one of them, Peacemaker, became quite successful. He's a good grower, but compared to Shanti, he's no breeder. After Shanti took the higher path and went to Switzerland in 99, Arjan the King bought seeds from Ingemar, he had to, he had no real Widow seeds left to fill his packs. So what went into GHS Widow after early 99 is not known with any certainty, but for the first few years, they were seeds from Ingemar, probably either his Peacemaker or related to it. Whatever it is, there are countess grows of it online to prove it's not the same or as good as the original.

So I reckon the Widow cuts we tend to see around these days are likely to be either a watered down, selected for yield and speed imitation of shanti's original or not related to real widow at all and come from Ingemar's outdoor fields.

Way back in the late 90s when we first got our hands on a pack of GHS Widow I remember which plant was selected as 'the one' and it was the short, fast, stocky, indica looking one, all the others were grown out once then discarded. They chose that indica one because it grew similar in size and pattern to their existing NL, they were very impressed because it yielded as good as their NL, finished in the same time but had more resin, and back then only three things mattered - how long, how much it produces and how much resin it has. When we smoked the first set of Widows, I was all 'I told you so' because the longest flowering, tallest, most sativa one had the best smoke by far, so I took the cut of the sat one, which they were throwing out anyway and ran it myself for a couple of turns.

One of the other guys bought a new house with the profits from that indica Widow selection though, that plant made a few people a substantial sum of money, I just helped out with their grows and grew my own stash, looking back, maybe I should have grown the indica one and made some money myself!

There are lots and lots of things you could grow that guarantee a good yield, but very few are the plants that combine big yield and connoisseur quality. One of the big reasons SSH and Kali Mist are so highly rated is that they produce buds in the same magnitude as the big yielding commercial fare but have much higher quality. Even SSH and Kali aren't special enough for some people, like I say, big yield and top quality aren't often to be found together. I mean, if Big Bud, Chronic and Top44 were top quality, we'd all be growing them!

But most folks still want the blues or the smelly one - for some reason, that stink just takes folks over, and they lose all rationality - until the front door's getting kicked in, and not always by the fuzz these days either...:(

It's almost Pavlovian - let em smell the stank and they salivate! It's because people have been conditioned to associate stink with quality. If you took away the stink from Cheese, you would have some very average product. I think there are plenty of other examples of this conditioned response - hash in Nepal springs to mind, folks expect high quality Nepalese hash to be soft, dark, pliable, so nowadays in Kathmandu, pretty much all you can buy is hash with added cooking oil to make it soft, dark and pliable. In the UK, folks expect quality buds to stink so when they get some stinky buds they assume it's top quality.

As it is soon Christmas, I will, for once, STFU about poxy Shanti and the stories that come from that direction.....

But there was an excellent thread here recently from a real Widow expert http://icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=149069

Read the OP, who has actually grown many versions out, not the following posters who try to twist the facts and overlook the evidence that it seems the current GHS version is easily as good as the MNS one.

Oh my - I see what you mean then! It was 1980 for me, but didn't get round to starting growing until late 80's. My mate bought a Phototron, which he used to grow NL in, and then gave it me when he got a bit bigger, but it didn't last long. I used to just grow African bagseed under fluoros, and then he gave me a Sensi Afhgani #1 male, which I decided to flower out. Once I'd made a few seeds I was hooked...;)

But the blues/smelly plants began appearing about '92/'93, I would guess, so the few years before that are the times to be looking at, in terms of possible parents...

Hey, I'm hardly 'old' myself - only mid-40s. I don't consider myself truly adult yet, anyway...;)

I wish I could say that ICMag saved my life, but it's certainly saved me buying some books at least! Though I've probably written about the equivalent of three or four since I joined. I barely have fingerprints left to worry about...;)
