BEST OVERALL AIR COOLED REFLECTOR ?

I use aluminum foil tape to seal around the glass. it seals well and the stuff pulls off easy after 60 days of use... does not leave a glue residue behind.

thanks for the dimentions correction :joint:

you can't beat a cool tube for Air Cooling. They allow a lamanar flow of air. IE., straight airflow is 100x as fast as Turbulent airflow.

Go to seedsetc.com click on the seed cataloge then scroll dow to refectors.

The guy sells them to me for 150 buck free shipping. Just ask him he is a good guy. You will need to run a bead of silicone around the glass to make it 100% air tight. If your using co2. They do have a gasket you can use but its a real PIA. You can still clean the inside of the glass by accessing thru the vent hole. Thats how I do it. The thing about these is the large size. they are Dimensions: 20.5in long x 24 in wide x 7.5 in tall .

Be careful you dont order the small one its to small.

Which one do you mean? They show eight and I didn't see any of them with those dimensions.

I really like how air cooled hoods allow the lights to get closer to the canopy, but I have always had problems with hot spots. My plants seem to enjoy being under a hood with a parabolic curve rather than the sharp angles of most enclosed hoods. I've included an example of what I mean, the Hydrofarm Super GroWing is one. :

Anyone know of an aircooled light that uses that parabolic wing shape?

Also, I fucking hate it when they use chrome or some other flat shiny metal to reflect. They must think all growers are morons. That shit creates hot spots like nothing else and dosn't even do that great a hob of reflecting!
FLAT WHITE!
FLAT WHITE!
FLAT WHITE!

Thats my little cheer.

Check out my mini-review on the Hydrotek Silver Star. It's around the same price (or less!) as a Cool Sun, but IMO far superior:

Kinda... see the picture above; does that do it for you?

I might be getting a digital camera this weekend, and if I do I'll be sure to take some more pictures.

I think you'll absolutely love the Silver Star, GWG.

"Chromed" surfaces reflect just fine, and the textured versions don't really cause hot spots. The flat shiny that you refer to, typically used in batwing-style reflectors, are known to cause hot spots; but that's why you shouldn't buy those.

It looks neat and appears it'll be good at cooling, but not very good at an even light footprint by the shape of the reflective material. Maybe you could do a small review for us?

Hey, thanks clowntown. I did look at thoes while I was buying the POS hoods I have now, but they were a bit out of my range. I guess now I can go ahead and get the good ones, and give these fuckers away. I'm glad to hear they are working for you. No hot spots, you say?> Thats music to my ears.

HydroponicStore.com sells 'em for $143.95 with free shipping. Cheapest place I could find so far; most places will want at least $10 - $20 more (after shipping). They also had no problems shipping it discreetly in a plain white box (well, original mostly-plain white box with small Hydrotek logo and such covered up very well), when I asked. So they get :yes: from me.

There's a person that sells it on eBay as well, but for me it was slightly more expensive after shipping. And I think they drop-ship and may not have much control over having the "Hydrotek" and such covered up.

Also available in 8", but from Progressive-Growth.com for $153.15 + shipping (their 6" is $144.64 + shipping). I've never purchased from them but I'm assuming they physically carry it (as opposed to drop-shipping), and probably won't have any problems covering it up well for shipping if that's a concern for you.

Still no camera; hoping to get that worked out tomorrow and have some pictures posted.

The Best refelctor I have used yet has been the 6" Cool Breeze refecltor, 1000watt's of light in a setup with temps that never break 76f even in the summer :)

You may want to look at what is best for you. I think there are 3 main requirements in a hood.

Cost
Size
Performance

In what order of priority is up to you. For me it was Size/performance/cost. For me size and performance were tied together. As a 400w cab grower I wanted to be able to put the light right down on the buds to get as much penetration as possible, and was looking for the biggest footprint hood I can fit into my cab to allow for even light distribution. Cost was a factor, but not most important.

I went with the SunLeaves Sunspot Six. A big aircooled hood with a lens for $109.
Dimensions are 19.5x21.25x8

My cab is 28Wx33d. This still allows for 6" duct in back with ~5" of clearance in front for the intake. (I wanted to make sure the intake was not pushed too close to the wall choking it. ) I would like little bit wider hood, but this was about the limit of what I could find to that would still fit lengthwise.

Great coverage and I am able to bring the light within 4-6" of the tops. I could get closer, but with the light that close the edges of the cab do not get good light. But then there are not many hood that can push light 90 degrees to the side :)

i love my daystar's.. the cooling settup they have with the doubled alum. keeps it cool to the touch, and really insulates the heat and keeps your grow room alot cooler imo. for about 120+ bucks a pop 135 with a glass in it, best deal if your looking for quality. plus its a smaller configuration allowing for less light loss, also accomadates up to a 1000 watter.. and i believe i read a review or heard about it neway, that it was voted number one reflector for some gardening mag. decide how serious you are about your hobby, how much you want to spend, and really what you need it to do.

I'm sure the Daystar is a nice reflector, but I think "voted #1 from a gardening magazine" and all are a joke since none of those applications are in any way really relevant to cannabis growing. Cannabis has much different light requirements compared to typical "house plants". And I really hate hearing about "blah blah designed for greenhouse" BS too.

Kinda like when you read "Voted Best Pizza!" or things like that. It makes me wonder how credible such reviewers are, and whether an ulterior motive may have clouded an otherwise unbiased opinion.
I guess in the case of the Oscars, you can be pretty sure that a winner (And losing candidates) are all worthy of attention for some excellence. However, on the general level, I'm really skeptical when I read any review.

Just try looking up "best antivirus/firewall". It's unbelievable how many different opinions there are out there.
I'm sure most of the hoods described in this thread will do a good job. Just make sure they fit in your cabinet and will suit your needs down the road.

If a voted #1 hood didn't completely suit my needs I wouldn't hesitate to use #2 or even #10. I guess it depends on how many they reviewed though (sample size).

Good luck with the hood :) I'm waiting on my silverstar soon :)
