Same here, but I only wait 25 to 30 minutes after applying pollen (diluted at roughly 1 part pollen to 3 parts sterilised plain flour) with a paintbrush before spraying down with water, which I like to adjust PH to around 6.0 - 6.2 to mimic rainwater.Indoors I turn off the fan, wait an hour of two, spray the plants down, and then turn the fan back on again. Can't really do that outdoors but maybe doing it on a day with little wind and doing the spraydown could still work. I use a small paintbrush mainly, also used Q-tips sometimes.
I forgot to adjust the PH of my water last time and at 6.8 it burnt quite a few of the stigma on one of four plants in particular and with one or two others being not so badly damaged. Just one plant suffered no effects at all.
Peace
